Movie Review: Jagga Jasoos

Jagga Jasoos

Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Saswata Chatterjee, Kiran Srinivas, Sayani Gupta, Saurabh Shukla, Denzil Smith, Brijendra Kala, Karan Wahi, Mir Sarwar and Bijou Thaangjam
Director: Anurag Basu
Quick Take: Fresh whimsical comedy let down by execution
Ratings: 2.5 stars

Sing along musicals are a Hollywood forte. Hindi films may have their share of singing and dancing, but to have a full blown musical with very little spoken dialogue, is a unique and rare proposition. Anurag Basu's Jagga Jasoos is a certified Disney powered children's musical film. Sadly, it's not as polished as usual Disney products. Full marks to the filmmaker for trying, but this whimsical adventure story panning across continents is not exactly as good as it could have been.

Jagga Jasoos is an attempt to stage Ranbir Kapoor as India's answer to Tin Tin. He's not a reporter, but his good looking sidekick Shruti (Katrina Kaif) is. Together, they follow the footsteps of Jagga's foster dad Tutti Futti (Saswata Chatterjee) who's gone missing during an investigation to expose illegal arms dealers and international conspiracy. The entire tale is told in a high school musical sort of narrative by Shruti. She's introducing the legends of Jagga to school children. While the setup looks like classic Disney material, director and writer Basu has tried a little too hard to Indianize the entire concept. The first half is set in a quaint town in Manipal. It's another attempt to reel in the Seven Sister States that aren't really considered part of mainstream Indian culture. While the intentions are noble, the execution of Jagga Jasoos' history driven pro-patriotic and world peace preaching narrative is a bit too jarry.

Being a musical, this film gets the songs and the music bang on. Pritam's tunes are spunky and the choreography in the first half is fantastic too. But the sound mixing and design is very amateur. There are moments in Jagga Jasoos when the sound just doesn't seem right for the scene at all. Same goes for the VFX which is brilliant in some parts and lackluster in others. The second half of the film feels particularly laboured and shoddily put together. It really lets down the moment built up in a snazzy and quirky first half.

Ranbir Kapoor plays a character who stutters, but his zany dad Tutti Futti Bagchi teaches him the alternate route of speaking in lyrical tone to sing and avoid his stammer. It's a whimsical and fascinating role, one that allows Ranbir to prove once again that he's one of the best acting talents ever. But the storytelling doesn't always allow him to leave big impact. There are a lot of gags and physical comedy that distract from the emotional moments of his character. This is definitely not another Barfi. Katrina Kaif as Shruti gets an interesting character too. She's plagued by bad luck and most of her set pieces turn out to be fun. The chemistry between the leads is fantastic. But their romance never quite shines through.

Jagga Jasoos could have been so much more. But it just feels like a long and winding screenplay that tries to fit in too many clever ideas. It showcases a journey across the hills of India and the vast wilderness filled expanses of Africa too. But apart from a visual zing, the film manages little in terms of heart and emotion. Its also peppered with such rookie mistakes like a cheetah roaring like a lion and an ostrich laying an egg on the road. But then, it's a comical, light-hearted film that's supposed to entertain younger audiences. So may be the glitches can be overlooked. But all said and done, Jagga Jasoos doesn't get its heart in the right place. And that's just disappointing.

Shubhra is long-time film critic for Indian Express, so yeah she is reliable, but I think she is too harsh, like she gave MOM only 2 stars 😕

Jagga Jasoos Review: Don't Make The Galti Se Mistake Of Missing This!

This is surely one of Ranbir Kapoor's best performances.

Rating: 3.5/5 Stars (Three and half stars)

Star Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Saswata Chatterjee, Sayani Gupta, Saurabh Shukla, Rajatava Dutta

Director: Anurag Basu

jagga, a child orphaned at birth was growing up in a hospital. One day a man lands in the hospital with a broken leg. He is a key witness to the Purulia arms drop case. Introducing himself to Jagga as Tooty footy, he adopts him and takes him to his place. However, within a few days, he gets Jagga admitted into a boarding school and disappears mysteriously, leaving Jagga alone again. Jagga grows up in the boarding. Unsolved mysteries intrigued him and he started helping the local police inspector in solving cases.

Shruti is a school teacher who narrates Jagga's story to kids. Jagga's story also features her in a major role.

What is her role in Jagga's story? Where did Jagga's father go? Is he alive?

agga Jasoos Movie Review: Script Analysis

A unique and interesting story. Anurag Basu pens an intriguing tale of a father-son story. But there is more to it than just father-son bonding. Jagga's father Professor Bagchi's secret mission and Jagga's search for his missing father is what takes the story forward.

Katrina Kaif's character has been created in such a way that till the end the viewer would feel confused whether she is Jagga's sister or friend. What is she? Find it yourself after watching the film!

Another major confusion being the locations, in one moment it's Moynaguri, the next moment it's Purulia and then Manipur's Ukhrul. At times it's difficult to make out where they are. Also, I think there was a major confusion between Kenya's Mombasa and Brazil's Mombaca.

Jagga Jasoos Movie Review: Star Performance

Ranbir Kapoor as Jagga shows what he is capable of. He is a gem of an actor! Watch the film for Ranbir if not for anything else!

Katrina as school teacher Shruti tries her best and does a decent job.

Saswata Chatterjee as Professor Bagchi is excellent, Rajatava Chatterjee as police inspector and Saurabh Shukla as the antagonist are good.

Jagga Jasoos Movie Review: Direction, Music

Anurag Basu takes you on a musical adventurous journey. The film is engaging from the very beginning. However, it tends to stretch in the beginning of the second half and it could be tiring to hold your patience here. A little more effort was needed on the film's editing. The film regains pace as it moves towards the climax.

Basu has chosen a set of excellent and veteran actors in the form of Bengali actors Saswata Chatterjee, Rajatava Dutta, and Bollywood actor Saurabh Shukla, all of who play major roles in the film.

S Ravi Varman does a nice job with the camera. The film has been shot in scenic landscapes and nice sets. However, in several scenes, the fake background was clearly understandable, (as it used to be during black and white and early color films) which is surprising in this era of magnificent visual effects.

Pritam take a bow! Excellent use of music in weaving dialogues into songs and poetry. However, in one particular scene, the music sounded similar to Satyajit Ray's iconic detective film Sonar Kella (the camel scene for those who have watched it).

Songs Galti se mistake and the rap song Khaana khaake are my picks from the album.

Jagga Jasoos Movie Review: The Last Word

I would highly recommend watching this musical with a fresh and interesting script and nice music. This is surely one of Ranbir Kapoor's best performances.

3.5 stars!

awww the audience reaction is very positive here!! will pick up in the evenings!!

koi ja k us udan-khatola ko bol do I am here and dont panic if I dont post regularly over the weekend as I told earlier I am sick (at the wrong time). That was a post which was completely uncalled for. As I have repeated it many times I have a life outside of this forum. Whenever I get free time (due to holidays in Uni) I come here. And I do have other activities as well. I am not running away as your instigating post was pointing out even if it becomes the biggest disaster. Its not going to shatter the sky nor Earth is falling into pieces.I am flattered you look forward to my posts but I am not obliged to be attentive as per your likeness.

Going offline now. Will post my review in the evening or at night if I will be feeling better. I have ditched doctor's appointment to watch it on first day as I do with all Ranbir's movies.
