Abhishek and Rani actually did have some kind of a connection. I have heard people say that they didn't necessarily date but there was a very intense infatuation situation going on. There was a legit reason for their immense chemistry. Abhishek's stars were shining because of that pairing too. They got really popular for a while, even Kunal Kapoor tried to cash in on it by casting Abhi as her husband in Hum Tum. But they didn't last. Basically, Rani was "not good enough" for them and the crush was more intense from Rani's side. AB jr., I think, wasn't particularly serious about her. Bachchans rejected and patronized so many pretty, successful girls for their precious Abhishek. While Karishma's marriage failed, Rani married into a richer, more prominent family. Which is why AB Sr. was so passive-aggressive in his recent meeting with Rani, calling him Yash Raj's malkin and so. How their mighty son has fallen. From being a successful, hot eligible bachelor to a someone who lives only through his father's and wife's name. They really didn't expect him to crash and burn so hard. I watch his and Preity's KWK episode and it's kinda sad to see how far he has fallen, career-wise.
