Manoj Baypayee's Aligarh did not even make it to the final list of 89 films, jury chairperson Priyadarshan reveals
Priyadarshan makes shocking statements about Aligarh getting snubbed at the National awards.

The internet has been going crazy ever since it was announced that Akshay Kumar has won the Best Actor National award for Rustom. While a lot of people think that he didn't deserve it, others are happy for the actor. And then filmmaker and jury chairperson Priyadarshan went on to confuse the audience by saying that Akshay has won an award for both Rustom and Airlift. Though he clarified later that the award was just for Rustom and he personally liked both films a lot. One movie that deserved to at least be considered in the list was Hansal Mehta and Manoj Bajpayees Aligarh which hihglighted homosexuality.
When asked about why the film wasn't even considered the filmmaker told Mumbai Mirror," This year regional films, the Marathi, Bengali and Malayalam films in particular, were far better than the ones made in Bollywood. Most of them were not just entertaining potboilers but touched on significant social issues too. Aligarh did not make it to the final list of 89 films, which the jury saw. That list had mostly regional films many of which were really good." Can't say that we're not disappointed at all. Hansal Mehta also expressed his disappointment with the National Awards. In fact, Manoj Bajpayee even refused to comment on this issue. It's rather disappointing that a film like Aligarh got snubbed at the National Awards. Even Lunchbox had faced a similar fate at the National awards. Priyadarshan made quite a few shocking statements in his interview right from why Aamir Khan was not considered for the award to this. Well, clearly homosexuality doesn't fall under his list of social issues that need to be addressed. The filmmaker reacted to his position as the jury chairperson being questioned and said," Even Satyajit Ray's appointment was questioned. And if his appoint ment can be questioned, then so can anyone else's."
