Anil Kapoor takes on Jimmy Sheirgill over daughters Sonam and Rhea's film

By Mohar Basu | Posted 21-Mar-2017

Actor Anil Kapoor complains to IMPAA about Kareena Kapoor-starrer 'Veere Di Wedding' title clashing with that of Jimmy Sheirgill film -- 'Veerey Ki Wedding'; claims title rightfully belongs to daughters Sonam and Rhea

In January 2016, Sonam Kapoor and sister Rhea announced their passion project, a chick flick titled Veere Di Wedding. Helmed by Khoobsurat director Shashank Ghosh, the comedy-drama stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania.

The film's shooting was to kick off in mid-2016, but was deferred after Kareena Kapoor Khan confirmed her pregnancy. While Kareena, in her last interview to mid-day, said shooting would begin in May, the producers are now facing another challenge.

Jimmy Shergill

Filming for another production (Veerey Ki Wedding) is already underway, with cast members Jimmy Sheirgill and debutante actress Diljott, having completed 50 per cent of shooting. The almost identical names have bothered the Kapoors, who claim to have registered the title first. In a letter written to the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association (IMPAA), Sonam's father, veteran actor Anil Kapoor, has urged for intervention. Veerey Ki Wedding director Ashu Trikha says they had acquired a copyright and trademark for the title, apart from registering it with their association, Indian Film and TV Producers Council. Bollywood film producers are associated with different trade associations, all among which are helmed by the Film Makers Combine, which takes the final decision. "The association suggests that a trademark supersedes any other registration. Legally, we have supported our title with everything," he tells mid-day.

Kareena Kapoor Khan

Shooting for the songs, including the title track of the romantic-actioner, is complete, says Trikha. Following a packed schedule next week, 80 per cent of the film will be ready. Co-producer Chandan Bakshi says that though IMPAA had initially asked them to change the title, they gave the team a green signal after learning of the trademark and that a major part of the film had been shot.

A senior member of IMPAA said, "Anil will have to choose a new title, since shooting is yet to commence for his film. That's the only way out." Our text messages to Anil Kapoor went unanswered till the time of going to press.

i am sure they can change a lil more to accomodate the new title

that way it will still remain VDW with a different W only..

What is in a name? Make a good movie and people will surely watch it.
They can think of titles if ever the movie takes off.

Anil ji is right to do so, there is no reason why another production company should coast on the buzz that they generated with the title & their starpower. This is the second time this has happened to a Sonam Kapoor project. I remember how stupid Arbhaz Khan was for not stopping the other punjabi producers from using the concept & name for Dolly ki Doli since they registered it first. 😡

It is not ethical to steal someones movie name like this.🤢
Lesson learned for the Kapoors though. They should have protected the name already. Such a rookie mistake is not acceptable for them @ this point.

Please bare with me. I don't speak Hindi, so my question is do the tittles have the same meaning? If not, I don't get why they are complaining. As it was said before what matters is how good the movie is..
If yes, well I agree the other team should change their title.
