As Sathya Saran comments in the book, 'There was little in that meeting to suggest that Guru Dutt Films had just encountered its biggest star.' But they had. And when the distributor insisted they watch her film, they did, to kill time. But Guru Dutt neither liked the film, nor Waheeda's dance number. However, he asked Abar, as he always did, about his opinion. Akbar said that he found the girl 'Very photogenic,' and Guru Dutt agreed. But Waheeda Rehman, and the entire Hyderabad trip, was considered a failure and forgotten once the two went back in Mumbai. It was later, when Dutt was working on two films, CID and Pyaasa, and looking for a female to sing, dance and seduce the hero in CID that Dutt remembered the starlet from Hyderabad, and that Abrar had liked her. So they drew up a 5-year contract and Waheeda moved to Mumbai where she stayed near Guru Dutt's place. Abrar was given the responsibility of guiding Waheeda.

The first thing they wanted her to do was change her name as her name was not considered 'filmi' enough. It was a trend in those days with both actors and actresses to change their names into something more appropriate. But Waheeda, every bit a strong woman with a mind of her own - like in her films (who wouldn't mind playing an adulterous housewife in Guide even when all others actresses back then refused) - refused to change it. And so her name stayed. The other problem was that her role in CID was not long enough. So Abrar sat and made it longer. The rest, as we twist a popular cliche about history, is her-story. Despite not having a major role in CID, she endeared herself to the viewers who accepted her wholeheartedly. However, her best came in her next, Pyaasa, where she played a streetwalker who stakes her all to fulfil a poet's dream.

Clarity, lot of fun😉
😆😆 Padukone and Dutt, what a combo. As he spoke Bengali, so I used to think he is Bengali!😆

But how come he knew bengali, as he was from Bangalore, then isnt he supposed to speak Kannada?😕
