I am motivated by fear: Tiger Shroff
Tiger Shroff on his upcoming films, his fears, his motivations and more...
Tiger Shroff, like his father Jackie, is a guy of few words. Soft-spoken, well-mannered and endearing. He is certainly a chip off the old block. However, while his father was a charmer, Tiger is a good boy in the truest sense. He's a devoted friend, son and boyfriend. Two hits under his belt and the third film releasing soon, but no controversies yet. Of either the personal or professional variety. I caught up with the actor to find out what makes him tick. Tell me about A Flying Jatt...
It's a superhero film with a twist. Even when Aman gets his powers, he is scared of using them because he is scared to fight, of heights, of light, of speed, etc, so he is scared to use his powers until there comes a point in his life where he has no choice but to do so.
Who's your favourite superhero?
Spider-Man because he is the most human of them all and I love underdogs. He is an underdog in society but when he puts on his costume all that disappears. Even my character, A Flying Jatt is like that, so I could relate to him a lot.
You have done action in Heropanti and Baaghi. How is the action different this time?
I think A Flying Jatt has been the most challenging, because it is new territory. I am not playing the typical hero here. Aman is more of a flawed hero, more human, there's more of the graph to this character. He's a klutz, so there's humour, clumsiness in his body language and childlike flavour in his character, which I had to incorporate.
And action-wise?
The super villain in our film is Nathan Jones. He is seven feet tall and I am 5'10 inches so it was a challenge doing action with him and fighting and a real experience. Every time I stood in front of him, was a scary moment. He is so in character and such a powerful personality, fighting with him and having someone like him on board, was taking action to the next level.
You have a black belt in taekwondo...
I am not a black belt. I was gifted one. I am a visual learner. I watch videos and I learn. I practise in basements and on terraces with a group of boys, so, a lot is self-taught.
What's the one form of martial art you would love to learn?
Chinese Kung-Fu because cinematically, it's the most appealing form of martial arts, like what Bruce Lee did and Jackie Chan does. It's a visual spectacle watching them on screen. My style is a little more different, we have Indianised it more. That's a very pure, authentic form of martial arts. It's like a dance " very beautiful and graceful to watch. Maybe, I would learn and do it for Baaghi 2.
You are very disciplined. Have you always been like this?
I think because I have been a sportsman always even while growing up, an inherent discipline was built in me since then. I used to play football a lot, almost to the point when I wanted to represent our country.
So it's only about work?
It's about my family. The reason I am working is for my family. I derive my strength and motivation from them. The reason that I am working so hard is to make my father and mother happy.
Who are you closer to?
I can't choose! I love my parents so much that's it's impossible for me to choose. Everybody wants to know but how can you choose between your parents?
Who do you confide in?
I don't confide in anyone. I bottle up my emotions. I don't like to stress my parents on anything. When it comes to a personal or professional problem, I like to sort it out by myself. I have an inner voice that I keep talking to and which guides me.
Why are you so guarded about your personal life?
I prefer people talking about my work. The fact that so early in my career people are talking about my personal life, it's a little disheartening for me. That shouldn't be the focus of attention right now. How Tiger's different, how he's made a mark in his career in such a short time, how he's being competitive with only two films under his belt, he's had two back-two-back hits, he's on a hat trick " why don't people talk about these things? I prefer people talking about that aspect of my life. I am a very shy person and that's why I like to keep my personal life away from my public one.
What scares you the most?
When I am not able to do something " incapable of doing anything maybe a dance step, a scene or an instruction from my director. I am motivated by fear.
What keeps you grounded?
My father, and watching him all these years. Nobody has anything ill to say about him. He's come from such a humble background and given me such a sheltered childhood. He has so much goodwill in the industry and he hasn't changed. My father is the best with everybody " from the spotboy to the lightman and director " he's the same. My dad is my inspiration. Success is just a feeling " people appreciating the hard work you have put into your career, craft and work. Your fans are the ones who make you a star, they are the ones, who watch all your films so you have to give them the love back. It doesn't give me an ego boost or anything but just an incentive to work harder.
