This is most likely written by one of the cows in PC's own team.

Most "affair" stories are written in-camp.

It's the whole notion of "any publicity is good publicity".

Because obviously it's not true, but it will keep her name in the news, keep people talking about the star, and in the end it will pass because it was fake.
