I would add more:

- take up universal themes
- keep it simple, subtle, natural, instead of going preachy with hero giving lengthy speeches
- keep a good balance between realism, dream, drama, comedy, wisdom, emotion...make it seamless (most films can't manage it and just end up looking like khichdi)
- Hirani isn't just the only good filmmaker and entertainer, Kabir Khan has also joined the league!
- Salman can act, deliver the goods and do wonders if director channelises the right way
- child artistes shouldn't be underestimated, they can be awesome if tapped properly and given proper characterisation
- you do not always need item songs or skin show to make a film hit
- you do not need heavy budgets, special effects, show off, fancy embellishments or hi fi guest appearances to make film hit
- you don't always need massive marketing or carpet bombing the media to make a film hit
- you can use background cast also effectively to add meaning to your story
- you can use stereotypes without actually stereotyping your characters
- audience responds most to hope, than to mere titillation
- audience loves its superstars but is also game for good content
- WOM is the king. Good WOM is greater than any other publicity
- audience has to be engaged so that it laughs or cries along with your characters, it doesn't have to be just attracted to theatre
- you can make a clean film (without expletives etc) hit even in today's times, families, youth etc all lap it up if they like it

Provided that RaOne was a massive budget sci-fi flick so it had its own perks. Jai Ho was just bogus.

Ra One is a fraud hit. Everyone classified it as semi hit except BOI.

Fiasco. They added bullcrap excuses like subsidy, income from sale of rights blah blah to somehow prove it was a hit though in NO terms was it a clean hit.

Ra One was promoted like crazy and released on Diwali. Jai Ho wasn't promoted that much nor released on festival weekend. So compared to pre release buzz and budget, Ra One is a bigger disappointment than Jai Ho.

Ra One had no perks at all. No one bothers about special effects or sci fi stuff hype. They want engaging film, not just special effects.

And -Kabir Khan is right up there now, in top class league. He is the only one along with Hirani who can both entertain as well as give good content, and doesn't rely on mere junk like luv stories or masala to make a film hit.

The same thing smaller films and Aamir Khan have been proving for years now. Content = king.

Then why only on Xmas he makes records?

Let me ask What was so great in dhoom 3? And ghanghi ( which was a remake ) and not even a single scene chenged? ..since content mentioned !!

I doubt. Phantom looks completely serious. It will be very hard to have universal appeal like BB.

Plus Saif is nowhere near 3 Khans in terms of star power.
