A quarter of a century after he played ACP Joe D'Souza in Rajkumar Santoshi's directorial debut, Ghayal, Om Puri returns in the sequel. He's the only actor, besides Sunny Deol, to come back in the second instalment.
"We've been talking for six months and last month finalised the dates. It's just a cameo," says the veteran actor, who has already canned a scene with his reel life wife, Neena Kulkarni, and another with Sunny, the aspiring boxing champ of the original, Ajay Mehra, who returns with his dhai kilo ka haath in Ghayal Once Again, which he is also producing and directing. "One more day, a couple of hours, and that's the end of my role."
He admits that he hasn't read the script and all he can reveal is that the police officer has retired now but still shares a warm relationship with Sunny's character. "I remember one scene from Ghayal, which came towards the end of the film, where Joe tells Ajay that he wishes he could take off his uniform and join hands with him. It was a beautifully written scene and the lines, I'm told, got a lot of claps," Puri reminisces. "Ghayal was a very successful film and Sunny's taking a lot of pains to ensure that Ghayal Once More works as well."
Sunny was Filmfare's best actor 25 years ago but the performance that impressed Puri was Damini which came three years later. Sunny played a lawyer in that one and bagged not only his second black lady but also his National Award in the best supporting actor category. "He's grown a lot as an actor since and was very good in the scene we did together," Puri applauds.
