On Looking Good and Keeping Fit
"My curves are my favourite feature. Having a beautiful body is subjective. It just depends on the way you naturally look. If you're stick-thin, don't be self-conscious. The same way, if you're curvy, don't keep wishing you were skinny. It's unfair that people are forced to conform to a standard of beauty that may not come naturally to them. What's most important, really, is to be fit, healthy and happy. Just love the way you look-and own it!"
"The key to staying in shape is leading a life of moderation and balance, more than dieting. Personally, I love food way too much to give it up. The only thing I wish I could change a little is my metabolism. It's always been slow, so my body reacts way slower to exercise than it would for other people. I try to stay healthy as much as I can with the way I eat, though-I give in and gorge if I'm really craving something (followed, of course, by an extra 20 minutes on the treadmill in repentance for my sins!)"
On Why Someone Else's Idea of Beauty Shouldn't Influence You
"Cinema's image of body-beautiful shouldn't dictate the way an actress sees herself. In fact, no one should be allowed to tell you what's beautiful or not. It's a young girl who's in school, or college, it's everybody that's been subjected to this idea that you've got to look a certain way to be considered good-looking. I don't think anyone should go through life believing that."
"We try not to discriminate based on colour and sex-then what makes size so different? People come in every possible shape, and beauty is learning to love the way you look, and truly enjoying it. There's a tonne of pressure out there-I'm glad I've managed not to succumb to it, but I worry about the fact that there are girls out there who do."
"The actresses from back in the day had no body-image pressure to deal with, and while everybody was obsessed with the super-skinny thing for a while, I feel like we're coming back to the 'wholesome-is-beautiful' idea again."
On Her New Look (Including the Short Crop)
"I think this haircut, that I got recently, came at a good time. It was time for a change, and I think people wanted to see a different look on me as well. I did it mostly on an impulse, though. Everyone thinks it's really gutsy to go cut off your long hair, but I just woke up one day, and went for it! It gets hard to do things just on crazy instinct when you have the continuity of your films to consider. But I figured-hey, I'm done shooting (for now). Why the hell not?"
On Style (and Picking Comfort Over Trends)
'My mother is my biggest critic'
"My mum is my biggest critic and I take her opinion very seriously because I know that is one person, who is saying it only for my good and nobody else," Sonakshi told reporters in a group interview.
"I'm more of a dress-down person, than dress-up. The truth is, I can't stand dressing up! I like my clothes to be casual-track pants, flip-flops: that's much more me. I'd live in them if I could. But, since I can't, and I do need to dress the part when I step out of the house, my favourite bit is doing up my eyes. I think they're definitely one of my best features, and if I play them up just right, they end up doing the talking for me." "I'm not terribly conscious about what's in or out. I'm a big believer in personal style. I wear exactly what I'm comfortable in-though I know I can always find trends that work for me at Zara and Topshop if I need a little fashion inspiration!"
On Her First Music Video
"Earlier this year, I collaborated with Yo Yo Honey Singh to be in his music video, Desi Kalakaar. Honey actually asked me to be a part of it because he wanted someone with a good-girl/daddy's girl vibe-and when he told me I was going to be filming a car chase in L.A., how could I refuse? Plus, it gave me these fantastic memories-shooting with him was awesome because he's a really funny guy, and of course, that gorgeous Malibu beach house..." "Some people feel I look completely different in the video. It wasn't done deliberately. We had an amazing stylist from London and I think her look for me worked really well with the video. Plus, I loved going grunge-it was fun!"
On Loving Yourself...Just the Way You are
"Someone once told me that my beauty radiates from within, and that might just be the biggest compliment I've ever gotten about the way I look. People often wish that they could look like this or that person instead of themselves but I've never really felt that way about myself. I'm happy I look the way I do-I look like my mother, and I wouldn't change that for anything in the world. The trick is to remember that the body you have is gorgeous, just as it is. You can either flaunt it, or try to hide it, but if you embrace it, you'll actually be happier for it. And, if all else fails, play up your best feature. It's an insta-confidence fix!" "What's really crucial, in my opinion, is just to stay confident throughout. I just try to never lose confidence in myself. That's my best-kept secret (until now!)."
