Why do Indian TV serials whitewash actors?

In every serial of Star Plus they whitewash actors to an extreme level. I was astonished to see an interview of a TV actor in youtube. He is super brown but he looks extremely fair in Star plus serial. Another day I was watching news show about serials. They were showing that in editing table the actors get 'whitewashed'.

I don't get what's the problem of showing brown. Why it needs to be whitewashed? 😡

It's the same case for all actors/actresses throughout the world. Make-up and especially lightening have such an effect...

I like to know too. I think most of the guys are on the darker side and the sides are extremely fair. The only darker girls I've ever seen on TV serials recently are Laali, Sugni, and Kalpana.
