Dear Viewer

A movie titled LAKSHMI released last Friday. What was interesting about the movie was that the producers did not go overboard with their 'in-your-face' promotions. Sometimes, rather, at most times, it (these promotions) can get nauseating.

We have actors talking about their boyfriends and girlfriends and break-ups and anything else they think will shock the reader. Sometimes, I believe, the actors don't want to give out such details but I believe 'marketing' and the 'allotted budget' demands this.

Just recently we had the bosom of an 'import-artiste' being thrust on to our faces from print to internet to huge posters to what have you...

It did not help much because that movie bombed. Just bosom alone is not enough to titillate an intelligent viewer like you. You are obviously looking for more-content as well as intent.

We did not hear anything about the lead actress in LAKSHMI who is also a singer. We were not treated to her past romances or recent link-ups. Neither was there a quiz on her, to know her better like we had for the recent 'import-actress'. For the record her name is Monali Thakur and she gave a fabulous performance ().

With her wide eyes and body language, she transfers her plight and fright onto you as a viewer. She takes you through her ordeal. Her performance is very real. It scares you.

In fact the movie in itself is what genius is made of. It deals with a very real issue in a very real manner with director Nagesh Kukunoor taking no shortcuts in diluting the real atmosphere prevalent in an issue like this. The movie is on human trafficking.

It's a movie that anyone over 18 years of age needs to watch, unless of course, cinema of this caliber is not your forte or if you are not able to stomach such 'detailed' visual description.

Nagesh as a filmmaker has done a service to society by bringing on screen a topic which not everyone will be comfortable with. We need more filmmakers like him.

At the same time, we also need the producers backing these films to know that a little publicity, cleanly executed, the normal, routine way will not be bad.

As a film critic, I was 'stoned' with LAKSHMI. It is a 'must-watch' film. If you are reading this, dear viewer, do watch this movie. It's not often that a film like this comes out of Bollywood.

And after you have seen the movie, do ensure that you make an attempt to tell at least one person [if not three] to go watch it!

Let's celebrate Nagesh Kukunoor and Monali Thakur and the entire cast and crew of this fabulous product.

God Bless You
Martin D'Souza

👏 But,what the writer said works for past generations...

now generations are changed and it is the compitition "jamana"..having competition everywhere people want to buy after seeing what they want..a product needs a publicity...Jo dikta hai vo bik tha hai

But sometimes it get nauseating seeing them again and again on various places/channels..

He's probably talking about ALI ZAFAR imported from Pakistan ..As his movie Total Siyappa bombed at the BO and is a disaster! 😆

Ragini MMS is far from bombing..as it is already a HIT ..

Really true. So many actors and actresses are literally forced down our throats by vigorous promotions. And they become celebrities overnight. Yet, real actors and so many movies with true content never get recognized.

Queen hardly had any promotion..just shows that promotion don't really matter that much when it comes to boxoffice fate.

Viacom spent a lot for the promotion of the film. They had print ads, billboards and even partnerships with multiplex chains during intervals which I don't think the producers of a film like Lakshmi with a budget of 5 Cr. could afford. Kangana even came on Comedy Nights and India's Got Talent to promote the film. :)

1. The first got mixed reviews...
2. The film wasn't exactly a family film
3. Queen also didn't have much of promotions but we know how the film turned up
4. A film should have something to excite a person... The film might be realistic and great but at same point of time I as a audience will like to get engaged in a film that is entertaining and yet intelligent... I don't think Lakshmi was entertaining
5.Even though I agree a film like Ragini MMS2 got succeeded which had rather weak script but same time people knew such a film was releasing. 'Life is a race, if you try to stay calm others will succeed you and come first at finish line', thats why people PROMOTE film. Agar woh nhi karonge then how will people get to know about your product. You have to advertise it i order to captivate mindset of person

He has a point, but most people do not track what movies are coming out. I am interested in movies, but I don't remember seeing anything about Lakshmi until I saw it here. I am one who knows who knows Monali Thakur by name because I like Sawaro Loon, but I did not know she is doing a movie because who has time ?

Minimum promo is needed to bring information to people. If they don't know how will they support ?
