Maheep’s baubles are a hit with the stars

Maheep Kapoor, actor Sanjay Kapoor's wife is the lady behind all the lovely jewellery that actors Kajol, Rani and Saira Mohan wore in Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. Her jewellery has been so well received by people that she has her own signature line of baubles at jewellers' Notandas and Sons store in Mumbai.
So what kind of jewellery does Maheep make which is such a hit with actors and socialites? "I design modern, contemporary, and unique pieces which at the same time are classic. I am not into ethnic jewellery, but this doesn't mean my pieces can't be worn with Indian clothes," she explains. When asked what kind of jewellery is in at the moment, Maheep says it all depends upon the wearer.

"Women in Mumbai prefer to wear one big, prominent piece whereas their counterparts in Delhi are more flamboyant," she points out. But Maheep advises women to wear only what they are comfortable in. Another very attractive thing about the designer is, apart from designing stylish pieces, she makes sure they are comfortable for the wearer too. For KANK she made sure that the jewellery worn by the actresses would not be heavy at all. "I had to make sure the pieces were comfortable as the actresses have to concentrate on their performance, not on aching ears."

Talking about the movie she says, "I was at Karan's (Johar) house and we were all chilling when he asked if I would be interested in designing the jewellery for his film. I said yes and then sat down and worked with Manish (Malhotra)." This was the first film she designed for. After working with the best Maheep now wants to make sure the rest of her movie assignments too are in the same league as KANK.

Even though the film has got Maheep a lot of recognition, socialites and celebs have been aware of her talent for a very long time and would constantly ask her to design for them. "I started off designing for friends, but then people whom I didn't even know started calling me and asking me to design for them!" she says. Some of her friends who wear her jewellery include best friend Gauri Khan who along with Sridevi (Maheep's sister-in-law) even modelled for her. "Gauri is more into one-off pieces whereas Sridevi has so many lovely saris that she is into sets," reveals the designer.
