"Films are like marriages" says Kangna Ranaut who plays a super-girl in Krrish 3. The 26-year-old-fashionista shares her views on dating younger men and on marriage, in a candid chat with Mauli Singh, exclusively for Pinkvilla.
Your character in Krrish 3 seems to be inspired from Anne Hathaway's Catwoman in The Dark Night Rises.
There are similarities between Anne Hathaway's character and mine. Its also very flattering because we started this film in 2011 and the Dark Night Rises came in 2012. When I saw the film I noticed the similarities. Even HR (Hrithik Roshan) was quite surprised. We both have grey characters but my look is quite different from Anne's.
What was the biggest challenge of getting under the skin of a 'supergirl'?
Since its a science fiction, the main challenge was to get the look right. To get into the body suit which can be quite intimidating for a woman. Wearing a bodysuit is almost being naked because your whole body shape is revealed. Its like second skin on your body. So any flaw, even a little fat between your thighs will be easily noticed.
So did you hit the gym with a vengeance?
Not really gym but I did beach and guerilla training and a lot of free hand exercises like somersaults, cartwheels and splits so that my body looks convincing for a super girl. I didn't want to look like a super model.
You said this is a dream role.
It was always on my wish list to play a superwoman. When it was offered such a role I was kicked about it. I am probably the first Bollywood actress to play a superwoman. That makes it even more special.
This is also your first negative role.
Yes, Kaya has shades of grey. She is wicked but has a softer side too. She is more like a heroine. My role in Revolver Rani is full on villainous and more exciting but this is nice as well.
Reportedly, the role was offered to Chitrangada and Jaqueline Fernandes before you stepped in. Also, since you weren't too happy with Kites what made you do this film?
The script was written with me in mind. When Mr. Roshan asked me to read the script I told him "sir, I won't read the script because I won't do the film." When he asked the reason I told him that my experience in Kites was traumatic. Being a very dignified person he understood where I am coming from and let me go. I had never interacted with their family before. Anurag Basu was my only communication link. But they turned out to be very nice and continued calling me to the parties and family get togethers. Somewhere in my mind I started regretting saying no to the film. Meanwhile, I also read the news about Katrina and Deepika being offered the roles.
So you changed your mind.
I feel films are like marriages. They are made in heaven. As luck would have it, they suddenly called me to do the film even though they had another girl on board. If someone has dreamed about me in a role they won't be happy with anyone else. Mr. Roshan could have got any other girl but in his heart it was always me. My position in the film industry is pretty good and if people have to compromise to have me in the film, they will. In Fashion, Madhur said to me 'for Priyanka's role I have options but for your role I don't have an option'.
You play a girl-next-door in Queen, a superwoman in Krrish 3, a dacoit-cum-gangster in Revolver Rani and a prostitute in rajjo. Which has been the most demanding roles?
All the roles have been very demanding. You have to have methodical approach to these characters. You can't just switch on and off. For Revolver Rani I had to keep my phone off and get into the character. For Queen I went a week prior to the shoot location to adapt to the character.
In order to break away from your 'damsel-in-distress' image you ended up doing some 'silly' comedies. Do you regret that?
I have also done good comedies like Tanu Weds Manu. In a job you have to sustain yourself professionally and financially. You don't always get work on regular basis. Sometime you have to compromise. Last seven years have been full of struggles but thankfully, now I have come to a point where I feel very satisfied with films like Revolver Rani and Queen. If these films hadn't happened I would have been very unhappy and incomplete.
In Rajjo your character falls for a younger boy. Will you date a younger guy in real life?
Never. I am 26 and I will never date a younger guy because he will be a kid. Its horrible to talk to a 26 year old guys. All they talk about gaming. The guys from mountains are not so childish. My friends back home are so mature and responsible.
You have been controversy's favourite child for a long time but now things have changed for better. Have you become discreet with age?
No I think people don't find my personal life interesting anymore. They think I am doing the same boring stuff, dating random guys and giving sensational quotes (laughs).
Any plans to settle down with any of these 'random guys'?
I am already settled.
So who is the lucky one?
I, me, myself. You don't have to always settle down with another person. Marriage is so boring and old fashioned. I have no plans to get married.
