The basic difference between single screen and multiplex is in single screen one movie run at a time which is a single movie hall, in multiplex multiple movie running at a time ie many screen.
single screen ruled by certain laws so the ticket prices are regulated it is something between 40 to 120 in metros and rs, 30 to rs 50 in towns. As it is single screen so hall capacity is too large like 500 people. Mostly these movie halls were built prior to 2000.
where as multiplex ticket prices are too high like starting from rs. 120 to 600. They even increase decrease ticket prices as per festivals etc. Everything starting from popcorn is costly. Generally multiplexes are in shoping complexes . As many movies running at a time so hall capacity is too small. Mostly multiplex boom happen after 2000 like PVR , Cinemax etc.
Business angle :
When there is a reference about the business viability , viewer choice of a movie basically it differentiate between urban viewers and town viewers. As multiplex is metro phenomenon. only those single screen exist in metro which were built in old days , rest all new are multiplex where as in towns etc. mostly single screen is there.
so this business viability is related to taste of viewers, sitting capacity viability of viewers etc. generally off beat movies were targeted towards multiplex viewers as there is always a segment of viewers are there to watch them and so also hall capacity is small , so it is viable to run them.
Regarding commercial movies like reddy , CE etc. they are just differentiating between the collection between urban and semi urban viewers. Basically all these masala commercial movies target multiplex viewers with having some ingredients for single screen viewers. Because the bulk amount of collection they do is from metros only . Thats why even a flop movie can collect 50 crore in the initial week itself.
All in all most of the movies are like fast food , garbage in garbage out. just consume it and forget it.
