For me, the best right now has to be Pakhi from Lootera. I liked the character the most because Pakhi was very different from the women we are used to visualize in the 1950's. She was liberated, independent, she knew how to express her feelings..let it be lighting up a cigarette or going to a stranger's room at the middle of the night and start a physical relationship, I think Pakhi was a very unique character who had traits completely different from what a woman was supposed to be at that time according to the society.
I also found the character of Zoya from Raanjhnaa very complex and interesting. I think its very rare to find such a confusing character sketch of a female character in Bollywood films. Whether she was white, black or just grey..you really can't say even after the ending of the film. Whether she used Kundan for her own benefit or was just a good friend..it's not clear even at the end of the movie and that's the reason I found Zoya to be very different from the usual characters in hindi romantic movies.
Out of so many female oriented movies, I've actually found Pakhi(Lootera), Zoya(Raanjhnaa), Vidya(Kahaani) and Shashi (English Vinglish) to be genuine. Rest of the characters like Meghna(Fashion),Mahi Arora (Heroine) very superficial.
