It was in 2011 when Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan came together on screen and delivered the Blockbuster THE DIRTY PICTURE. Now, 2 years later, the combo is back!
But, this time it's different. Whereas THE DIRTY PICTURE was a colorful massy film (also had universal appeal), GHANCHAKKAR is more of a darker, multiplex type film.
Both stars have been going through a wondeful phase. Vidya Balan has been having a great career and the turning point was her Blockbuster THE DIRTY PICTURE, and she followed it up with the Super Hit KAHAANI. Emraan's last film EK THI DAAYAN only did reasonable business and RUSH was a disaster (but it was delayed!), but if you look before that, he had a lot of successful films including one of last year's Blockbusters RAAZ 3.
So, the big question is, can Emraan and Vidya strike on screen magic again?
GHANCHAKKAR's trailer was released a few months back, and it seems to be a witty film that has comedy and some sort of twists as well (as mentioned by Emraan). Surprisingly, the film hasn't been able to create the type of hype that you would think there would be for a film starring big stars like Emraan and Vidya. Also, the songs of the film have not caught on it seems!
However, this film has a big plus point going for it, and it is the director! The director of the film is Rajkumar Gupta, who directed AAMIR ( a film that was appreciated), and NO ONE KILLED JESSICA (also won a lot of appreciation and was a box office success). Therefore, it seems assured that because of the director, because of Vidya Balan who has smart script sense and knows what works with the audience, and because of Emraan who knows what the public likes (usually), it can be assured that the content of GHANCHAKKAR will be appreciated!
The opening of the film will be good, especially due to Emraan-Vidya's presence. Their popularity can ensure a good opening at single screens. The multiplex content of the film will help get the film a good opening at multiplexes. However, one major thing that must be noted is that this film's opening will be BADLY affected in North India. The reason for that is because on the same day, the Punjabi film JATT AND JULIET 2 will be releasing. For those who don't know, JATT AND JULIET 2 is the sequel to JATT AND JULIET (2012), which was the biggest Blockbuster in Punjabi cinema. Therefore, the release of JATT AND JULIET 2 will damage the collections of GHANCHAKKAR in North India.
After the opening weekend, I feel that GHANCHAKKAR WILL sustain, because the film will most likely be appreciated (as mentioned above). Although, the use of swears in the film may become a problem for family audiences.

Opening Day: 7 crores net
Opening Weekend: 27 crores net
Lifetime Collections: 80+ crores net
Overall Box Office Verdict: Super Hit
