Um, why couldn't he make a silent film in today's time? If he can make a semi-silent film, then he can make a silent one too. Whether it would work or not is something that can only be determined after the film's release, but there is no reason he couldn't have taken out the handful of dialogues that were in the film.

Also, has this person not heard of The Artist? Silence is in! 😆

This statement takes the cake...when it comes to all of the idiotic points she has raised...so if someone wants to make a movie on a deaf and dumb person...its because they were not born in the silent era and they are now fulfilling their FANTASY by using a deaf and dumb person as the main character....so the movie KOSHISH starring Sanjiv kumar and Jaya Bhadui was also a result of a similar FANTASY..🤣🤣

W*F is the writer going on about how Jhilmil should be incapable of feeling any complex emotion. She is autistic, not a sociapath.

Any normal person would not look at the girl in Jhilmil's condition as his future wife. Barfi is only deaf and mute. He is capable of thinking like a normal person. Isn't he?

ARE YOU SERIOUS? This is so blatantly ableist, I can't even deal.
the film has been hastily declared as India's entry for Oscars. Now, India's entry for Oscars doesn't mean much but this kind of declaration while the film is still running in the theatres, will definitely boost its business. Just wondering when did 'Barfi's makers filed their entry and how did the Film Federation of India, not only arrived so quickly at the decision but also thought it fit to announce it so hurriedly?
This is the whole point why the film was hastily forwarded for the Oscars...
this decision has definitely urged masses to watch the film ...when it is running in theaters

I personally belief that the overall calm effect of the movie outweighs the flaws of the movie. No one said the movie was perfect or flawless, it just projected characters which are rarely if not never found on screen! Two disabled people were portrayed with a purpose not to evoke sympathy but to show that happiness/love doesn't see cast, creed or the normality of a person. They are equal for everyone provided someone is ready to take the tiniest of grains of happiness with open heart rather than sit and sulk and wait for the mighty tree of happiness to shower the fruits. Barfi! showed people being happy with the grains, something hardly anyone does in today's time anymore. So yeah, if one thinks on those lines then the flaws become ignorable. I guess the writer didn't get this point of the movie...or maybe was in a bad mood because his/her partner is not as caring and loving as Barfi/Jhilmil. Jealous hai :P

@AppleBlossom & blue-ice - the whole article seems ableist to me...or rather, prejudiced against disability. I guess Black and MNIK should have been silent films too judging by this criteria *rolls eyes*

As for autistic people and their ability to process emotions - it isn't that they can't feel those emotions but that they can't quantify them in the same terms as others.

To borrow Anu's phrase, I'm not drinking Barfi's kool-aid in copious amounts either (😆) but come on, logical arguments only, please 😆

So the main point of this Article is How can a seemingly "normal person" fall in love with an Autistic person? How superficial and Shallow is this reviewer?
Rest is her POV.

very valid point...
every field that uses advertising/the media has a certain degree of manipulation involved in its agendas

There is NO movie I can think of that doesn't try to manipulate. It's what movies are made for! To make an impact on the audience's mind.

I get the author's basic point I guess, she's entitled to that obviously.
But I don't think other movies are any different. Aren't most movies created in a way that force people to feel for one character or the other?
We're meant to feel for Salman when his mother dies in Dabang, and when he rises to face the evil. We're meant to feel for Shreyas in even Housefull 2 (all I felt was rage though 😡). We're manipulated into thinking that Singham is the most badass cop in town and thats why everyone chants "Gotya" along with him when he makes fun of Gotya.

Why should Barfi be any different?
