Being Paresh
Actor Paresh Rawal talks about being typecast in Bollywood, hiking his fee and resuming Gujarati theatre
Kunal M Shah
Not many know that Paresh Rawal was the person who facilitated Naseeruddin Shah to read Uttam Gada's script. This resulted in Shah getting a script for his debut film Yun Hota To Kya Hota.
"The writer Uttam Gada had given me the script to read at the same time that Naseer was on the look-out for a script," says Paresh. "I told Naseer about the script and after reading it he loved it. He made some changes and decided to start the film. The film has four different love stories and every character is equally important."
Besides this film, Paresh is looking forward to Golmaal and Cheeni Kam which will be released this year.
Speaking about his spate of comedy films, Paresh says, "I have never treated these films as comedies. I treat each role as individual characters. But in the past, my comedy films worked and directors started to approach me with similar scripts. It is very sad one gets typecast in Bollywood very fast. On my part I approach every role differently, but at the end of the day the film is a director's medium. I have done many films in the past where the final product is very different from the initial narrative, and has prompted me to hide my face after the release. That's the reason I always believe in theatre . Once I am on the stage, I know that I can hold my audience. Theatre definitely is an actor's medium."
Which explains his comeback to theatre after a long gap, "I did not do Gujarati theatre for the last 13 years and now Madhu Rai is writing a script for me," he says.
Will his wife Swaroop Sampat be part of the play? "We are definitely planning to work together but let the script be completed," he says.
While he was busy with comedies, was staying away from serious roles a concerted effort on his part? "This is a misconception. I am looking out for an appealing character to play; and money is not an issue. I am very bored of doing the same comedy films and am desperately looking for something challenging."
But has his remuneration increased as reports suggest? "There is nothing wrong in increasing one's fee. I have reached the top only due to my acting abilities. I am not a star son nor do I have a god father. Why shouldn't I charge?" he says.
While his friend and co-actor Shah has got into direction, does Paresh have any intentions? "I am happy being an actor and have no intentions of getting into direction or production. I just want some variety in the roles I play," he says.
