Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has ruled out an apology for the 2002 Gujarat riots. In an interview to The Wall Street Journal, Modi said the guilty in the riots case did not deserve forgiveness through an apology, but a punishment.

"One only has to ask for forgiveness if one is guilty of a crime. If you think it's such a big crime, why should the culprit be forgiven? Just because Modi is a chief minister, why should he be forgiven? I think Modi should get the biggest punishment possible if he is guilty. And the world should know there isn't any tolerance for these kind of political leaders," Modi said in the interview.

The demand for Modi's resignation as the Gujarat Chief Minister has grown after BJP MLA Maya Kodnani was convicted in the Naroda Patiya massacre case of the 2002 riots.

The Congress did not waste any time in grabbing the opportunity to attack the BJP. Lashing out at the main Opposition party, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said that it was "evident" that in the riots, BJP leaders and officials were involved.

"It all happened with Narendra Modi's consent," said Digvijaya. "Kodani or any other person... who would have done it without Chief Minister's permission? Investigative agencies must think of it and see how much is the Chief Minister answerable. The justice should be delivered as soon as possible. It is clear that the minister and others acted under the behest of the Chief Minister because no minister would get involved in mass crime until they have the consent of the chief minister."

Welcoming the verdict, Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid said that he was glad justice had finally been delivered. "These things take time but I am glad that justice has finally been done."

The minister, however, was guarded in his criticism of Modi. "I don't want to mix politics with this... but this raises question on the morality issue that is often raised," he said.

However, his government in Gujarat ruled out his resignation. Gujarat government spokesperson Jai Narayan Vyas said the party will go through the judgement and take appropriate legal advice. "We will read the judgement and take appropriate legal advise, can't link everything to the party," Vyas said.

"Maya Kodnani was not a minister when the incident happened. We are not denying that she is an MLA from the party now. But an MLA is not a state government functionary," Vyas said.

Modi is better than Congress anyday. There hasn't been a single riot under his rule since 2002. Gujarat has made tremendous progress and is the most developed state in India by far. It's not even a question how much good he's done for Gujarat. I have lots of family in Gujarat and they will never vote for anyone other than Modi.

This is the problem with discussing religion, politics in the Bollywood forum, it stops being a debate and becomes a catfight.

To me Modi is the best CM and administrator India has ever had at least in a long time. However ther riots are a part of his past as well.

the question we need to ask is how much can we overlook this past and embrace what he can bring in as a champion of development?

Having stayed in a number of Indian states over a few year and having seen the development or lack of it 1st hand, politics and crime of the state bureaucracy, I can safely say that Modi deserves another chance.

If Modi is bad, so are the other politicians in India. Lets not even get started on the crimes of the others CMS in India. Its a matter of how much gets revealed not how good or bad they are.

Its a sad state of affairs that we constantly have to pick from the less of evils instead of throwing out anyone with a shady past.

If we need to remove all politicians who have in someway propogated anti secularism, then we probably have to get rid of all politicians and all bureacrats.

Religion is such a bane in modern politics and development.

Strange that people care about particular community who lost their lives in riots but nobody care about people who burnt alive in a train with their family without any provocation, hints or consequences. Nobody has asked that what happen to their killers, did they arrested or not, did them got punishment or not.

Let God be the judge. One day Karma will hit back, Mr. Modi.

Patience is the virtue. There will be a time when you will ask for forgiveness and not even God will be around to hear your plea. The bloodshed you initiated will stain your clothes as you cry for mercy. It wll be too late by then.

I wish you all the best, and I pray for the victims who went through pain and the chagrin of having faith in this demon of a leader.

May God bless!
