Devdas deserves to be in the list. It is not merely an SRK film. In the literary world, Sarat Chandra Chattopdhyay Devdas is India's epic romantic tragedy. It is akin to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, but the characters he creates are richer, deeper and much more flawed. A huge part of Devdas's charm lies in these characters and their stories penned. Devdas is selfish, arrogant and obsessive. Paro is vain, self absorbed and stubborn. Together they make an unlikely and extremely volatile couple – their chemistry often igniting each other on paths of self destruction.
Although previous versions of Devdas were commendable, SLB's vision brought it to life with a renewed grandeur. He meticulously recreated Bengal in the times of the Raj. He brought to life the dichotomy and culture clash between the wealthy zamindaars and the lower class. We were transported to the courtesan houses where women would learn the arts of entertainment, conversation and lived in independent wealth – but yet were never free or respected. The music and choreography was also fabulous. Who can forget Madhuri's Maar Daala or the epic dance of Dola Re?
Madhuri, Ash and SRK added the star power and good acting to make it a great film – but without the story, script, narration, direction, sets, music, costumes and everything that went into it – the movie wouldn't be much. This film deserves accolades for how everything came together to make a classic.
