KAREENA KAPOOR
"I enjoy going out with guys, I've had my share of boyfriends"

Refugee , the much talked about film, which promised the birth of two big stars, came and went, without much of the expected stir. But the debutantes are here to stay. Kareena's wish of being known more as an actress than a star was facilitated by such a film. She may still be new, but the ice has been broken. Where does she go from here? What's the general drift about this larger than life, saucy actress who speaks her mind?

Kareena Kapoor has landed on her feet and proves to be the type who'll have it no other way. She's clear about what she wants and she is out to get it, no matter what.

Would you do other films without hearing the script, like you did with Refugee?

It depends entirely on who the maker is. Like if it was a Yash Chopra or a Subhash Ghai, then definitely. It's not just their success. There are a handful of directors whom I am very keen to work with. And I have captured most of them by now. So, if it's those directors, then I definitely have full faith in them because I've seen their work earlier. They make their heroines stand out, so I'm assured that I'll be in safe hands.

Have you learnt from your sister's struggle?

Definitely. That's why I'm so cautious. I've seen her all throughout her struggle. She's a totally self-made girl who has learnt from her mistakes. If she is the no.1, she totally deserves it. From her I've picked up and learnt all the way, because I was with her all the time. It's not that I'm too careful. I'm very set and I know what I want. I also know I'm going to get it.

Do you believe that you have to uphold the R.K name?

Definitely. I have too many expectations to live up to. There is my grandfather, father, mother and most of all there is my sister. She is the biggest burden I have to live up to. Besides I have to make proud my entire Kapoor family.

What kind of cinema influenced you in your formative years?

I have watched more or less all my grandfather's films. And I've been the greatest fan of Meena Kumari because she's the only actress who made me cry, till Kajol came along. None of the other actresses could ever make me shed a tear. Karisma moved to tears in Raja Hindustani and Dil To Pagal Hai, but other than that, I've only liked these two actresses. Since childhood, I've always wanted to be like Meena Kumari in every way, she was the best for me. I know those filmmakers aren't there anymore, but they've influenced me in a really big way. That genre of filmmaking excites me. For me, it's easier to make people cry than make them laugh.

Are you critical of Karisma's performances?

Totally. I am one person who is blunt to the point of sounding rude. I don't care if the other person feels bad, but I cannot change.

Are you looking more at box-office success or critical acclaim at this point in your career?

I want to be known as a performer, but I don't want a serious image. I want to be an actress first and a star later. If you are a good actress, stardom is sure to follow. If today, Rambha's film does well, she might have hundred producers running behind her, but is she known for her acting? I don't want to be like that. For me, respectability as an actress counts the most.

You seem to be a big fan of the Yash Chopra genre of filmmaking.

I'm completely inspired by these films. For me, even to be a part of a Yash Chopra film in any role is a dream come true. And I've told him that. I feel that as an artiste, you shouldn't make any bones about what you feel or desire. I want to work with Sooraj Barjatya and Yash Chopra and I will say so openly that yes, I will do anything to work with them. I want to work with the best. Subhash Ghai was my dream. I thought that I'd get to be a part of his films after seven years of my career. But, luckily I got his film so early in my career. I was signed on four months before Hrithik was even considered. I'm very ambitious, but I won't stick on in films if the audience is fed up of me and waiting for me to leave. I want the audience to say 'Where is she?'

You aren't part of the next RK film. Would you be comfortable acting in a home production, directed by one of your uncles?

I wouldn't want to do a RK film right now in my career, but it would be a very big privilege to work in a banner like that. And even if I worked in an R.K film later on, it would only be for my dad, not if anyone else was directing it. So, whenever my dad is ready, I'd love to do his film, but for no one else in the family. Because I just feel that he's the best amongst the lot.

Don't you agree that you depend too much on your mom for all your decisions?

My mom is somebody who is everything to me. She's responsible for whatever I am doing in life. She's the decision- maker of my family. I tell her everything I do, she is open to every thing, but she does advise me if she feels I'm going wrong. Finally, all the decisions are left to me. My mom is very young and open-minded in her thinking. She is very well tuned to today's generation. And also I feel that she has seen so much more in life than me, so she knows what's right and wrong. There is nobody who will think more about me than her. We are like friends, I tell her everything I have on my mind.

People in the industry feel that your mom interferes too much in your life, like she did earlier with Karisma?

I think it's a very media hyped issue. My mother doesn't even know what I do or where I am, half the time. After the Kaho Na Pyar Hai incident, people said all these things, but it was not only my mom, I too had differences with Rakesh Roshan. Besides, my mom does not even come for my shootings. She came along only for the first schedule of Refugee. So, it's not fair to say that she interferes too much.

Have you always aspired to be an actress?

I always knew that I wanted to join the movies. For me, it's been a childhood dream. Also, I 'm very sure what I want in life. For me awards are very important. Mere ko awards chahiye hi, Shah Rukh Khan works only for awards, I'm like that too. As a child, I spent many hours in front of the mirror, preparing my speech for the Filmfare award that I would win one day.

What are your plus points as an actress, compared to the present reigning heroines?

I think I'll stand out because I'm real. Compared to most heroines who are made-up, I'm very real. Most of them are fake and done up all the time. And this is not a conscious thing, I'm just a real person.

Karisma has always been a thorough workaholic. Do you feel that you have the energy level to match up to that sort of commitment?

I have a different kind of energy level, but I am very dedicated. I worship my work, it's like God to me. Whenever I'm on the sets, it's only my work, but after pack-up, it's my life. People on the sets are oblivious to me. I hate socializing with my directors and producers unless they are my friends, like Karan Johar.

How do you manage to keep your personal and professional lives apart?

I have lots of friends from outside the industry, whom I party and socialize with. When I'm on the sets, work is my focus, but as soon as pack-up is called, I'm on my own. I don't hang out with industry folks beyond my work. Karisma never had much of a social life, but I'm not like that. I very much have an active social life, I'm out every night, my mom keeps screaming that I'm never home for dinner on time. I lead a full life, I party and go out to nightclubs with my friends, but I don't smoke or drink, because I haven't been raised that way. But I enjoy going out with guys and I've had my fair share of boyfriends. I'm very normal. Films are my life, but there is another side to me that co-exists alongside.

Sadly the industry changes a lot of people.. even my own favourite Katrina. I remember how she used to say she would never do a kissing scene.. but has done it twice now.

I am not even a frequent member to the Bollywood section. I'll share any star's interview which I find interesting and highlight interesting part (which I find interesting!) the way I did this one.

For me it's all in spirit of fun and timepass. I am not a fan of any star in particular. Nor a hater.

Still, it's upto you if you want to consider any sinister intentions behind my posting it.

I'd only say any talk about filmstars for me, is in spirit of fun & entertainment.

Okay. I understand. BTW, I was just exploring archives of old film websites to pass time! And found many interviews & articles. So decided to share.

Also, found an interview of Shilpa Shetty blasting away Akshay Kumar after their break up. I am wondering I should post it anywhere or not. Or else people will call me Shilpa or Akki hater!😆

From archives one can see stars used to be more outspoken earlier, even in general. Maybe now they are somewhat restrained due to constant scrutiny of media which makes headlines for years and years, based on just one quote!

Older interviews were decidedly more fun - for all stars and not just Kareena.
