| Actor Kay Kay Menon (Sarkar) turns singer for Aranya theatre troupe's Hindi play, Bali Aur Shambhu.
This tale of friendship, written-directed by Manav Kaul and produced by Tushar Raut, revolves around inmates of an old age home. It premieres at Prithvi Theatre on Republic Day with daily shows till January 29. High notes
Kay Kay recently recorded the three-and-a-half minute track titled Shubhankar at a Lokhandwala studio. The song, which is described to be like a filmi number, has Kay Kay indulge in some high-pitched notes as well.
"It was just a one-off offer from friends," says Kay Kay, who is shooting in Goa for Manish Srivastava's film Ready, Steady, Go. "I have no illusions of being a singer, I can hum and this is just my bit for the play. It is more of a performance song," points out the actor.
Adds Raut, "Kay Kay is part of our group and he would hang out with us at Prithvi every evening till he became a star. So we know that Kay Kay is a good singer as well; we have all heard him. He has that voice of a singer. When we were planning the play, we decided to have Kay Kay sing for it. He was thrilled to do the honour and his voice was bang on for the track."
The lyrics are by theatre actor Vijay Maurya while the music's been composed by Kedar Bhagat (Iqbal). Filmi number
"The song has a proper setting in the play. In fact it is just like any film song and we are also planning to release the song. Kay Kay has literally acted out the singing. It has several variations and now when we listen to it, it's like any Bollywood track," adds Raut.
Incidentally, the Kaul-Raut duo have earlier staged plays like Shakkar Ke Paanch Daane (which will be staged at Prithvi tomorrow as a part of the on-going Juhu Hamara Festival) and Peele Scooterwala Aadmi. Kaul, who also acts besides being a writer-director, has featured in Jajantram Mamantram and a Marathi film, Saatchya Aat Gharat. He will also be seen in Amrit Sagar's film 1971.
While Raut, a name associated with the Prithvi Theatre Festival, began as an actor and turned producer. The two, along with some like-minded friends, formed Aranya in 2004 to stage original Hindi productions. |
