Aamir needs a hit after the Dhobighat debacle and the uncertain premise of the pseudo-intellectual Reema Kagti venture. So, obviously he will turn towards the surest box-office goodluck charm in Katrina. . It's just a calculated business decision. It's not as if he needs an actress with great acting chops for Dhoom 3 anyway.
