Do you think actors get roles that are similiar to how they are in real life?

Not really. Just think of all the actors who have played heartless killers or rapists.

What I think happens is that when an actor---take for instance my favorite, SRK---plays a role that the public responds to his press machine will grind into high gear creating a public persona for that actor that is based upon all the good things people like about his most popular characters.

That press image, along with the roles he plays on screen will blend together and, as the only aspect of that actor we, the audience, are privy to, they will soon be widely held to be the actor's real personality.

As long as this thinking sells it will be encouraged by everyone in the industry and as long as it makes the fans "feel good' they will block out all evidence that their idol is not really what the press & the cinema hall make him out to be.

It's a willful suspension of disbelief I guess.

That said, any time an actor plays a role he or she must bring some of themselves to it. It would be impossible to do anything else unless you are portraying a well known real person (for instance a Winston Churchill who raises his arms, wobbles his head and cries would be just plain WRONG)

In this respect though it isn't that the role is built upon the actor it is that the actor uses themselves and their characteristics to make their portrayal more real and natural.
