MIDDAY REVIEW!!
GOLMAAL 3
U; Comedy
Dir: Rohit Shetty
Cast: Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty, Ratna Pathak Shah, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Johny Lever, Shreyas Talpade, Kunal Khemu
Rating: ****
What's it about: There is no one like Rohit Shetty when it comes to contemporary comedies. Forget the logic and the rationale -- no one makes you laugh as hard as he does. Golmaal 3 is pure, unadulterated non-stop fun. At the same time, one cannot ignore the amount of effort and detailing that goes into Rohit's films. You may actually have to see them the second time around to gauge what you missed out on during the first viewing. G3 is the story of two families that collide because fate and history decide to do the calling. Pritam (Chakraborty) is tired of the troubles brought upon him by his three sons, Madhav (Warsi), Lucky (Tusshar) and Laxman (Khemu). By chance, he stumbles upon his lost love Geeta (Pathak Shah) who lives with her two sons Gopal (Devgn) and Laxman ( Talpade). Even though years have passed, sparks fly between Pritam and Geeta. Helping them reunite is Dabboo (Kareena), Geeta's next-door neighbour. Chaos follows when Dabboo convinces them to get married. Gopal and Laxman who cannot stand the sight of Pritam's sons are forced to live with them. The madness continues till they're all hit with the reality of their roots, which eventually brings them together. And then the madness continues all over again .
WHAT'S HOT: Rohit Shetty challenges your imagination. He brings forth multiple characters, crazy confusion, parallel tracks, unbelievable characters, and jaw-dropping action. In most comedies, you come out of the theater remembering some of the highlight sequences. In G3, that's not possible, because you just lose count. All you remember is that you've been laughing all your way before and after the intermission. It's a daunting task handling so many characters but Rohit manages to do complete justice to each. The film begins on a slow note but once it picks up speed, it zooms. The add-on characters like Vasuli (Mukesh Tiwari), Chintu (Ashwini Kalsekar), Daaga and Teja (Vrajesh Hirjee and Sanjay Mishra) and Geeta's father (Prem Chopra) are fabulous. Johnny Lever makes a spectacular comeback as the local don Pappi. His 'Ghajini' act will have you rolling down the aisles. The entire confrontation between the two sets of sons is hilarious. To mention a few highlight sequences would be unfair to the film and the director because this ride is simply unstoppable. In terms of script, this is Rohit's strongest film to date. He borrows the idea from Basu Chaterjee's Khatta Meetha (1978) and then takes it to a new level. The film depends heavily on its screenplay (Yunus Sajawal) and dialogues (Farhad-Sajid and Bunty Rathore) -- and they make the film what it is. The performances are top-notch as well. Mithun Chakraborty reminds you of the days of yore when he dominated the screen. Ratna Pathak Shah is perfectly cast. Kunal Khemu's poetic dialogues have a lasting impact. Shreyas Talpade adds good support. Arshad Warsi displays his flair for comedy once again. Tusshar Kapoor brings the house down with typical flair. He also raises the bar in his impressive emotional scene, which is sure to make you cry. Ajay Devgn is superb as the volatile and unpredictable Gopal. The energy he brings to his character is unparalleled. The real hero of G3 is undoubtedly Kareena Kapoor who plays her tomboy act to perfection. She's the one who takes the story forward. Look out for her special gaalis -- they'll be the new buzz words.
WHAT'S NOT: Some bit of editing would've done the film a world of good. Johnny Lever's jet-ski sequence is a bit stretched and hampers the flow to some extent. Even the fight sequence starring Ajay and Arshad seems to be deliberately added. It's too long without reason.
WHAT TO DO: Golmaal 3 is the best Diwali treat this year. Prepare to laugh your guts out. It's the funniest film of the year so far...

India Today Review
Fringe characters funnier than stars in comedy franchise
Golmaal 3
Director: Rohit Shetty
Starring: Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor
Rating:
Sometimes even the worst, most overblown franchises can have little gems hidden deep within. It was Sanjay Mishra for me in Golmaal 3. Made with an eye to cashing in on Diwali, clearly the film was written on the fly. So some lines are good, especially those bestowed on the newest member of this accidental franchise, Kunal Khemu. Harsha hai to Bhogle hai, Asha hai to Bhonsle hai. Football hai to Maradona hai, and so forth. Most though are truly silly. But it is the poker faced Mishra - he pops up in several dire comedies, from Welcome to All the Best, to enliven the proceedings - who runs away with the movie. MRF, he spells, maane maar. HIV, he spells again, maane haar. It is enough to bring the house down, especially as it is delivered in his typical sad sack manner. If ever there was an award for best fringe player, it should go to him.'
The other good thing about the film is the lovely Kareena Kapoor, who is completely spontaneous. As the tomboyish Daboo (yes, it's that sort of film where every name is a nod at some film connection), she flexes her muscles, abuses, and generally engineers events. She looks fresh faced, less stick like and is totally natural (or at least as natural as one can be in a film that casts the long-in-the-tooth Devgn as a young man adopted by Ratna Pathak Shah). The stint in 3 Idiots with a director of the calibre of Raju Hirani has done her good. Kareena, kindly dont go back to being a pouty poster girl for fashion magazines.
The rest of the film is the kind of mess that is like soggy popcorn (a note to all cinema hall owners everywhere in India, why does the popcorn always taste like wet cardboard?) There's a sweet little retro romance going on between Disco Dancer Mithun Charaborty and "mahalon ki pari" Ratna Pathak Shah, complete with a cameo by Prem naam hai mera, Prem Chopra. And for a bit, Devgn's finger bending ways do amuse. But there are far too many characters in this holiday in Goa (and you thought Goa had only Russians and Nigerians?). From Johnny Lever to Vrijesh Hirjee who does his no longer funny snake dance, from Ashwini Kalsekar, the English speaking fisherwoman, to Mukesh Tiwari, the "vasooli" who doesnt understand her but loves her anyway, they seem far more interesting than either Shreyas Talpade or Tusshar Kapoor.
There's no point complaining about the utterly politically incorrect nature of the speech-impaired jokes or the vulgar nature of various actions, so I won't. But if you have to watch it, and perhaps you do need an escape from the Obamania, then do watch out for the man in the dark glasses who spells no as YES. Mr Mishra, take a bow. And someone please give him a raise.
