Though not high on star value, the comedy genre of Paying Guests was looked forward to. But like most loosely-handled comedies, Paying Guests too couldn't find a decent audience. The film had potential to be a good entertainer but thanks to the dull jokes, loud performances and pathetic actresses, Paying Guests couldn't cheer up the box-office scenario. The opening collections were an average of 20-25% which improved marginally on Sunday but dropped Monday onwards.
Tolu Bajaj, COO Distribution, Mukta Arts says, "On Friday the box office collections were a little low, however, as the word started catching up, and audience appreciation started to generate buzz, the collections shot up as well on Sunday." Thanks to its small budget, the film might recover its cost through satellite and video rights. Bajaj maintains, "Paying Guests has turned out to be a profit making film for Mukta Arts. In fact the movie has already grossed Rs 6 Crores within the first 3 days of its release".
Gayatri Patel starrer Let's Dance couldn't cut ice for the lack of face-value and promotions. As clearly predicted and palpable, the third release (yes there was one more release) Hum Phir Milenge starring Sarvar Ahuja was a non-starter with as bad as 0% occupancy.
Interestingly the fourth installment of the X-Men series, X-Men Origins: Wolverine that grossed $160 million internationally in its opening weekend and has crossed $350 million worldwide got an equally good opening in India.
Released in English and Hindi version the film garnered one of the highest openings among Hollywood films in India, beating films like 'Fast & the Furious 4', 'Angels & Demons', 'The Dark Knight' and 'Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull'.
The film grossed more than Rs 2 Crores in its opening day itself. The first 2 days saw theatres running to packed houses across several regions of the country. Many multiplexes increased the number of shows with the positive response that the film got. The first weekend all India gross went as high as Rs 7.5 crores.
All eyes are now set on Yash Raj Film's New York that releases this Friday. New York starring John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Mukesh is real big on banner, cast and curiosity value.
New York is significant for everyone - producer, exhibitor and audiences. It's been long that the Yash Raj banner has had a true-blue blockbuster to its credit. Tashan, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and Roadside Romeo were clear flops while Bachna Ae Haseeno clicked though not to blockbuster status, characteristic of Yash Raj. The theatre box-office hasn't really seen a hit in a long long time. And finally the cine-goer hasn't tasted good value entertainment for ages. Let's see if New York is able to make the trio happy or one has to extend the wait to Kambakkht Ishq.
