April 08, 2009, (Sawf News) - Ram Gopal Varma helmed and penned Indian media drama Rann has been renamed to India 24/7.

The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Paresh Rawal, Mohnish Behl, Riteish Deshmukh, Manisha Koirala, Rajat Kapoor, Sudeep, Gul Panag, Raima Sen and Rajpal Yadav.

On April 5 Amitabh wrote on his blog: "So the shoot on the new film progresses well. The title is no longer 'RANN', as in a battle or a war, but 'INDIA 24/7'."

The film will focus on the press and "expose the behind-the-scenes truth of how a truth telling machinery…has no choice but to corrupt itself to become a money-making and power-brokering enterprise."

In a post on his blog, the maverick director Ram Gopal Varma promises that the film will be high drama.

"The way the news are presented today are much more entertaining than family soaps and thrillers. What's worse is that we enjoy this kind [of] presentation so much that we have got addicted to them for our daily dose of fun and drama," he writes on his blog.

The media is meant to be "a truth telling machinery serving the purpose of the common people so that they know they are in good hands or in case they are told that they are not, they can hope to exercise the power of their vote to bring about a change," he adds.

While the common man relies on the media for honest news reporting "in a free economy system where there is so much competition the media by default is lost in its purpose."

Amitabh Bachchan plays the role of Harshvarshan Malik, the founder of the first private news channel in India, India 24/7. His character is Harvard-educated. He is India's most respected media personality and a hardcore upholder of journalistic ethics.

Sudeep plays Bachchan's son, Jay Malik who is very ambitious and a go-getter. For him their news channel is purely a business enterprise and its standing is judged from the profits it makes.
