All the Khans unite!

Mumbai: Irrespective of their numerous internal squabbles, for this one time all the Khans have come together. Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan have both sent consent letters to the producers' body that they are standing by the film-funders and not the multiplexes in the current stand-off plaguing the celluloid industry.

All the Khans have put their weight behind the producers' body.What's more interesting is that Salman Khan (who has sworn to never patch up with SRK post their rift at Katrina Kaif's birthday) too has joined SRK and Aamir by telling the producers that he is on their side. Saif Ali Khan, we have learnt, will also show his allegiance to the film-makers and not the exhibitors.

Mukesh Bhatt, chairman of the producers' body, says, "It is true that we have got consent letters from the big Khans in the film fraternity. As you know, all of them have turned producers and so they are on our side and not the multiplexes. We want to show the multiplexes that we all are together in this fight." Interestingly, Aamir is very close to PVR as he forged a partnership with the company for his directorial debut Taare Zameen Par.

Earlier, a source had tipped us about the development, "When the core committee of the producers' body took a decision to ban the multiplexes, they asked all the producers for consent on the decision. The Khans were approached too as they all own production houses. Being producers, they had to side the funding body."

Aamir, SRK come together to fight for film industry

The on-again-off-again powerful duo presented a united front at a producers meeting on Thursday to discuss the multiplex deadlock

Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan may love to snipe at each other publicly, but when they meet they are at their cordial best.

That was evident on Thursday when they had a hush-hush meeting at The Club in Andheri with other producers like Dharma Productions, Vishesh Films, UTV, Eros, Yash Raj Films and Studio 18 to discuss solutions for the producer-multiplex impasse.

Says a source present at the meeting, "All producers and distributors have decided not to release their movies from April 4 until multiplexes agree to an equal share in revenue regardless of the star cast or budget.

Until then, the marketing and distribution of all new films set for release from April 4 have been suspended, except Percept's Tasveer 8 X 10, which released yesterday."

About SRK and Aamir, the source adds, "This is one area where both SRK and Aamir are united. Both were seen chatting and catching up on many things like old friends. It's a good thing because everyone realises that we are all part of one family the film industry."

Indefinite delay

Other producers too noticed the good vibes between Shah Rukh and Aamir. Mukesh Bhatt, from Vishesh Films, says, "I was present at the meeting with Aamir, Shah Rukh, Ronnie Screwwala from UTV, Karan Johar from Dharma, Yash Chopra from Yash Raj Films. Aamir and Shah Rukh were very warm and friendly towards each other.

"They greeted each other cordially. It's our prime duty to stand by one another in crisis and help each other through it. That's what Aamir and Shah Rukh are doing."

Producer Sajid Nadiadwala who wasn't present at the meeting said, "I was to attend, but I couldn't. Though I was to initially release Kambakkht Ishq on May 29, now I'm not.

There's been an indefinite delay. I am there with the fraternity. My film is big, but it's not bigger than the fraternity."

Blank screens to greet viewers at multiplexes

Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan cannot stop breathing fire at each other, but the duo have agreed to smoke the peace pipe for a greater good - get producers (a club both incidentally belong to) a better deal from multiplexes. As most producers stuck to the self-imposed ban beginning Friday on releasing new films, Aamir and Shah Rukh together met multiplex representatives to explore ways to diffuse the crisis. A source from the producer-distributor body said, "There is a chance of the two actors addressing a press conference early next week.

It is the same problem that afflicts a certain slight man with a calculated smile, suffering from massive delusions of self-importance; actor Aamir Khan.

Aamir Khan is like Advani, similarly obsessed with a rank "outsider" in Shah Rukh Khan who has dominated tinsel-town with inexorable strangle-hold for over 15 years. For Aamir that is an inexcusable intransigence, and he vents his frustration like a petulant "puppy" (the pun on the famous "dog comment" is blatantly deliberate, folks) denied his juicy bone.

It is a human condition that certain occupations develop incestuous co-habitation for survival, no matter how much they privately find each other as repugnant as a lizard's tail in a blue lagoon cocktail; media, bankers, models, Bollywood and politics, amongst some illustrious ones.

The truth is that it was Aamir who indulged in the most pedestrian "joke" about a national icon and fellow colleague by referring to him as a "dog" in his now-defunct blog. In my opinion, that was not just low-cut, it was downright scurvy.

Ever since, he seems to take a sadistic delight in playing below-the-belt stuff, even as he blames the cigarette-puffing SRK for his cocky arrogance.

But Khan's real indignation is about how a lonely struggling Dilliwallah stormed Bollywood and became it's undisputed ruler with a resounding territorial conquest, while despite his huge kinship and entrenched props in his own turf, Aamir Khan himself got forced into nebulous oblivion. His recent media-savvy excursions are a ham-handed effort to reclaim the throne that he think is an insider's birth-right, not an outsider's prerogative to capture. That's why the massive sulk. That's why, like Advani, there is an occasional display of shocking condescension for the "other" guy.

Producers to outline course of action today

MUMBAI: The United Forum (of Bollywood producers), with actor-producers Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, will outline how they propose to carry

forward their battle for "justice'', in a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

Bollwood producers and multiplex owners have been fighting over revenue, and the former have decided against releasing any film in multiplexes till their demands are met (see box).

In a meeting held on April 3, representatives of the United Forum handed over their list of demands to multiplex owners, who asked for "time till Sunday to think over the issue''.

Cinemax senior-vice president Devang Sampat said: "We ultimately have to look at our balance sheet. We are also talking to the stars and appraising them of our problems. The pressure tactics will not make us compromise on the stand we have taken.''

There's a hardening of postures on the film-makers' side as well. "I've been shooting non-stop during the day for the last fortnight and at night we (the United Forum) have been having extensive meetings to resolve the issue,'' film-maker Karan Johar, whose residence in Pali Hill has been the venue for producers' meetings, said on Monday. "Even the producer community has been battling the multiplex cartel to resolve this issue amicably. However, it doesn't mean they will compromise,'' he added.

Insiders say most multiplexes are averse to a standarised 50:50 revenue-sharing demand because they feel Bollywood content in recent months has hit rock bottom and they are hardly able to get enough revenue.

Producers, however, say that this is a lame excuse. "The mutliplexes charge standardised rates whether their property is in south Mumbai or a distant suburb. It is also hardly our fault if the plexes have opened 19 screens in Ghaziabad and, therefore, footfalls are divided. Some planning should have gone into this. Why should we bear the brunt?'' a producer asked.

SRK, Aamir ab aamne-saamne

Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan will come face-to-face to address the media at an event at a Juhu hotel today.

As both are film producers, they will spell out their stand against the multiplexes.

As reported ('Aamir, SRK come together to fight for film industry'; MiD DAY, April 4) both the actors have had closed-door meetings to discuss issues to resolve the current impasse between the multiplexes and film producers over sharing equal revenue.

Apart from the strike issues, it will be interesting to see them together post their verbal volleys against each other in the media. Wonder what they have to say now?
