Bollywood actress Chitrangada, who had taken a break from the film industry after her debut in 'Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi', and made a recent comeback with Onir's film 'Sorry Bhai', will be seen now playing the iconic character of 'Chandramukhi' in Sudhir Mishra's 'Devdas'. Sudhir Mishra's Chandramukhi will be a different character though. She will play a role from the one shown in earlier movies titled 'Devdas' as a modern day socialite in the film. This is to recall that 'Devdas' is based on Sharatchandra's classic novel 'Devdas', and Sudhir Mishra has provided a different interpretation to the novel's story. According to Chitrangda, the film is a political thriller set in the backdrop of modern Rajasthan, where Devdas is an aspiring politician while Paro is the member of the opposition party. She adds that her character 'Chandra' is a socialite, who is ambitious, selfish, shrewd and, of course, beautiful. She doesn't hesitate in using her sensuality to get whatever she wants. Interestingly, Chandra has extraordinary quality of combining the two extremes in her life. She is materialistic and ambitious but she falls helplessly in love with Dev, who is just reverse.
Chitrangada is full of appreciation for Mishra and finds in him a very sensitive director and one who understands his women characters. His next film 'Tera Kya Hoga Johnny' is superb, she added. Chitrangada caught the imagination of filmmakers with her power packed performance and fresh looks in Mishra's acclaimed film 'Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi' in 2005. That's why she was called the next Smita Patil in the film industry with only one film. However, the same industry was surprised when she decided to quit acting and get married to golfer Jyoti Randhawa. She blasted the media myth that her husband was behind her decision to quit acting. When asked about being compared to Smita Patil, Chitrangada says, "It is a big compliment but a huge responsibility at the same time. I try to push myself as an actor to the best of my potential and I will be honored if I come anywhere close to her because she is not alive and it is difficult to compete with the memory of such a great actor." Please recall that Lara Dutta plays Paro and Shiney Ahuja, the modern Devdas, in the new title of 'Devdas'.
