Many of us have wondered, why only Rajput Princesses married Mughal Kings and not the other way around, that is Mughal princesses marrying Rajput Kings.

The answer will astonish you as it did me. According to the book Maharana Pratap by Dr Bhawan Singh Rana, it is written in Rajput records called the Vir Vinod that Akbar had put several marriage proposals of Mughal princesses before Rajput kings, but to maintain purity of blood or for some other reasons, they were refused.

Now you know, Akbar wanted two-way matrimonial alliance. This is vital knowledge because it explodes the argument that Mughal Emperors forced Rajput Kings to hand their daughters in marriage when they were not willing to do the same with their own daughters.

The author Dr Bhawan Singh Rana writes 'It is sad that the Rajput Kings of that era did not feel much shame in marrying off their sisters/daughters to the Mughal kings, but they developed a sense of shame on the issue of marrying Mughal princesses.'

By the way, I highly recommend this book if you want to know more about the life history of the Great warrior Maharana Pratap.

rajputs did not wanted to marry mughal princess because the maghal wanted to convert them in islam .they were againt marrying their daughters but when your own person becomes traitor than what they can do . even today you can see if any hindu boy orgirl marry a christian or a muslim their name is changed and are converted even the child name is kept from their religion Islam or Christian . no offence to any one and if i hurt anyone i am sorry.

Thanks for response. If what you say is true the author would have mentioned it. He went into great detail of history. Besides in which era does a man change anything for a woman. Sadly never. It is always the woman who has to compromise, even today in interreligious marriages.

No the real reason was maybe purity of blood, as the author Dr Rana says.

There was an elephant called Ramprasad in Maharana Pratap's army. Akbar, loved this elephant, he asked for it many times, but the Maharana refused.

So it happened that after the Battle of Haldighati when the Mughal forces led by Raja Maan Singh defeated Maharana Pratap, this elephant was captured. The giant beast was taken to Akbar who was delighted. Akbar gave homage to a Pir, who he believed had brought them victory in the battle. So, he renamed the Elephant PirPrasad.

Source- Maharana Pratap by Dr Bhawan Singh Rana. The same book from where I quoted the Mughal princesses info.

I assure you, this Elephant thing is no laughing matter, this is serious stuff. Elephants were the tanks of that era, and huge, well disciplined bull elephants were priceless. A lot depended on their ability to maintain composure and not panic in the face of enemy attacks. Since they were the lead elephants, other elephants took their cue from them, as long as the lead elephant kept calm, the other elephants would remain calm too.

This book has many interesting tidbits and a detailed life history of Maharana Pratap. Really worth buying and it costs just 95 Rs.
