Agreed. Social workers make money either by writing books or working as academics in colleges and universities. Some are also into social entrepreneurship through which you can serve the society as well as make good money.
The best thing would have been to send Anandi to an institute like TISS and let her have proper education, training, interaction with fellow students, experts and actual change-makers. She could have come back after a leap and changed the face of Jetsar. Plus exposure in outside world would have changed her perspective, her outlook and made her more independent, self reliant and given her clarity. It would have helped her move on from Jagya and that trauma of child marriage.
Or Anandi could have enrolled in a college in Jaipur, traveled everyday and after coming back home she could have taken classes side by side in evening. Or perhaps taken classes on weekends or alternate days of the week..
Even if she had enrolled in a proper degree course from an open university like IGNOU it would have been better. She could manage studies, give exams regularly and get a formal degree.
This whole casual reading of primary students' SST books in leisure and teaching adults is of no use. It's bogus!
If she herself is not able to concentrate and has given up education now and even gave up earlier. How does she expect to convince villagers? And members of Singh family coming to her school is not enough. Are they playing school-school?
And why is she totally dependent on Singhs? Their name, their reputation, their finances, their presence?!! Will she ever do anything on her own?! Or will they spoon-feed her forever?
How will she handle her social work properly when she has no formal education or even training?
I find the current track hopeless and just another way to keep Singh family in picture, keep Anandi docile and far-removed from modernity or progress and ever-dependent on Singhs to facilitate her each and every intention!
Education of villagers would have been acceptable either if Anandi was also studying side by side or after she completed her study.
BTW, you can also call me Anu.
I would have liked it if she had studied (if not law or medicine then even degree in social work or development studies), or started an NGO or organised some movement or perhaps started a cooperative or some self help group for women which helps them work as well as earn!
