@brainychild92: am online for sum time now checking the questions of yest exams so can reply..like i said,am playing the devil's advocate here so am ready to justify what i say..when i say its a necessity,its because i tihnk it toughens u up and it gives u a lesson in humility..and i repeat i do not mean the atrocious acts done in the name of ragging..well tht girl i spoke of,i did not agree wid her attitude,to each his own,i respect ur opinion,bt i dint see any change in her arrogance (yes,i wud call it arrogance,not self respect) thruout college,which is y i think she was harassed thruout..and like i said,i have seen and have heard frm a lot of people tht when freshers enter college,there are two kinds of freshers,one who think the world is at their feet coz they are out of home for first time and will be independant et al,and one set which is petrified of the whole new world..interactions wid the seniors helps both sets in diametrically opposite manner..the first set is shown tht till date we were protected frm the harsh realities,and the sooner we realise life is not a bed of roses the better..and the second set is brought out of their shell..this was my experience wid my seniors..who i personally had a great rapport wid..my seniors were there to help out during exams,control us during hysteria abt finals,have fun during festivals when we are away frm home,to feed us dahi-shakkar before the very first university exams,they were our guardians in every manner..and like guardians,they were quick to ground us when we got over-confident abt anything..and if there is no interaction (which unfortunately also comes under "ragging") freshers wud miss out on all this..tht is y i say ragging is necessary..if we cnt handle seniors,how wud we handle the teachers and the patients??

ok now my POV. I would say a minimal tagging is healthy in the medical colleges. Like Anu said it would toughen you up a bit which is fine to make you not scared of so many things. But at the same time it shouldn't be an act to show that seniors have the upper hand and juniors are 🤬 type.
It's ok as long as it's within limits and for some fun. Not a ritual.

Very good point. The only problem is who decides what is minimal. That is where I think the problem starts. Each person would have their own view and the person at the other end may not agree. So it is up to the teachers or the institution itself, to give some guidelines within which the students need to comply.

I think it should be the students themselves. They should not repeat the atrocities on their juniors just because they had to go through this n now you have to. If just one batch decides to stop ragging, it would stop completely n thexnext 5 yrs

For my graduation I was in an all girls college. the golden rule was sciences rag only science juniors, arts rag arts and commerce rag commerce juniors...no crossover...

I had brilliant advice from my senior (lived down the street whose younger brother would come to my mum for math and physics tuition) to play ball to reasonable request otherwise it will escalate...

I was asked to sing, i said i am very bad at it, they said no problem, and i sang...and they begged me to stop. but then one of the seniors thought I was using reverse psychology and thought i was faking the crap singing...sigh! and wanted to escalate...i started panicking and started singing again,..and this time it was far worse and then they believed that i was truly besuri...and gave me a nickname of 'koyal' (cuckoo a bird that sings sweetly) which kind of stuck for a few weeks! so basically harmless...

but when we got to second year, a politician's daughter in commerce picked on a science student(bang out of order). the fresher was quite big and she was given a six inch scale and asked to measure the college compound wall at the point where it started from the ground...i.e.stay bent to the ground and move.... the poor girl did it and they said she got it wrong and made her do it again... she did it...

they said she still got it wrong and asked her to do it another time...by then i believe she was panting like crazy and sweating rivers, poor thing said she cant anymore(the wall was like atleast 50metres)...and they kept taunting her about being fat...and in the end the girl just flared up and said 'well, you are not exactly thin are you?' and thats it, they held her by her really loooong plait and cut it off...they literally hacked her hair off...

by the time we found out and arrived they had chopped of most of her hair close to the scalp...we took it up with the principal...almost all of the college was involved. the princy was not taking any action as it was a local politician's daughter and there was major drama and we had all boycotted classes (forced by our seniors) and so on...in the end the politician came to the college and spoke to the girls parents and we dont know what ensued, the politician's daughter stayed and the fresher left and joined a different college...

very very sad and ugly...

after that there was an official no ragging rule...but it still went on bubt no such incident thankfully for the next 5 years(my sis joined the same college after i left and that's how i know)

so as anu says, there is no clear definition for ragging!

It's so horrible!!!!! Is it a general college or professional college. I thought only professional colleges had such raggings

@ammoos - not a professional college, just a normal degree college. I think most colleges have mild ragging which is mostly fun. the nasty ones usually come out of professional colleges!

Once my elder sister told me that in her hotel management college in Kolkata ,(I will not name it , It is one of the best colleges) she has faced a weird kind of ragging. The teachers were also involved in it , All junior 1st year students need to know tha name of 2nd years , They have to ask them their name but they will not reply directly ...

1st years have to say these line

" Good Morning Ma'am/Sir please take me behind the bushes and f**k me as hard as donkey and then tell me your name ....................."

There were few more lines.. I found it very funny . Those were very insulting lines,

19 September 2006:COOCH BEHAR (WB): Two students of Cooch Behar polytechnic here were arrested for allegedly ragging a first year student of the institute, police

sources said on Tuesday.

Muresul Islam Gaye, a first year student of Civil Engineering of the institute lodged an FIR with the Kowari police station on September 15 against two senior students for allegedly ragging him.

Gaye claimed in the FIR that on the night of September 13 he was subjected to severe ragging by the seniors in the hostel. He alleged that the seniors had compelled him to write a suicide note and even asked him to drink acid.

He then contacted his family in West Midnapore district. His family members came the next day and took him to MJN Hospital for treatment. An FIR was also lodged against the seniors.

The two senior students Sumitra Safdar and Joyce Bhattacharjee were arrested on Monday after the FIR was lodged by Gaye, police sources said.

Meanwhile, the Polytechnic has constituted a six-member committee to probe Gaye's allegations of ragging.
