SHOW SYNOPSIS
Set against the devastating background of farmer suicides in Maharashtra, Bairi Piya is a story about Amoli, a 20-year-old beautiful and cheerful daughter of a farmer Tukaram Kamble, who belongs to the Vidarbha region in the interiors of Maharashtra. Amoli, the eternally positive and optimistic girl is oblivious to her father's economic condition and that he is debt ridden just like other villagers in their taluka. However, she has to face this grim reality when one year due to locust attack, their entire crop is destroyed, just before the festival of 'Bail Pola'.A stark tale of deceit, power struggles, exploitation of the poor by the rich and the power. This story is a comment on the social evils still prevalent in the interior parts of Maharashtra like subjugation of woman by men in power, manipulation of customs and tradition by the keepers of the faith themselves, and hundreds of poverty stricken girls like Amoli who fall prey to manipulative men of might and become victims of their philandering.
CHARACTER SKETCH
Characters from the village:Character Sketch - Amoli
Amoli, the pretty 20 year old protagonist of the show is the eldest daughter of Tukaram Kamble, a farmer form Vidarbha in the interiors of Maharashtra. A girl who radiates positivity and optimism, Amoli is mature beyond her age and puts on a brave face despite the struggle of daily survival.
A favourite of everyone in the family and the village, Amoli shares a bond of love and friendship with them all. An ideal daughter to her parents and the guardian angel of her younger sister Bayo; Amoli manages to hide her hunger and pain during tough times. She shares a sisterly bond with her confidante and best friend Kaumudi who she loves dearly.
However, Amoli comes face to face a grim reality of her existence when she find out that her best friend Kaumudi has been mortgaged to the Thakur because her father Beturam Sahu was in dire need of money for Kaumudi's wedding. Oblivious to her own father's economic condition, Amoli is shocked to find out that he is also debt ridden like other farmers in the Taluka.
When the Thakur of the village lays his sight on the virginal Amoli and expresses his desire for her in exchange of money for her father's debt, the morals that Amoli has been raised with give her the strength to stand for herself and fight it out against the people who demand compromise and submission from her.
Always siding with the truth, Amoli is the voice of thousands of helpless women who are exploited by rich and manipulative men under the pretense of aiding their families during tough times.
Character Sketch - Tani
Tani, the youngest daughter of Tukaram Kamble is 10 years old and a bag of mischief! Her curious nature makes her trail behind Amoli all over the village and partake in every village gossip only to be blurted out later at the most inopportune times, usually causing embarrassment for Amoli. Tani dreams of lavish meals when food is scarce. To her, at times even a raw egg equals a feast! The naughty little girl is the life of the household and the apple of Amoli's eyes and treats Tani like her own child. Amoli happily gives up her share of happiness for her sister.
Character Sketch - Tukaram
A poor farmer in his late forties from the interiors of Maharashtra, Tukaram Kamble is Amoli's father. A weather beaten face and a body that speaks of a hard life filled with back breaking work, he toils from dawn to dusk just like thousands of farmers in the country who starve themselves and their families so that an entire nation has warm meals on their table. A simple man with simple needs who is devoted to his mother, loves his family and has a strong sense of kinship with his fellow villagers, Tukaram depends on his level headed daughter Amoli in matters of simple logistics of his crop produce. Guilt eats him up when he is unable to provide two square meals to his children and his pregnant wife, and yet although in a crisis himself, he never shies away from helping those in need. A simpleton who tries to hide harsh realities of his financial situation from his family to protect them, Tukaram ends up being manipulated by men in power as he takes them at face value.
[Picture not available]Character Sketch - Mothi AayiAt around 65 years old, Mothi Aayi is the eldest member in the house. Bedridden and immobile due to arthritis and back problems, the old lady however retains her spirit as she shares all the village gossip and by nitpicking constantly in every household matter. A typical village mother in law, she expects her daughter in law to deliver a male child the third time. Her conversation is always enriched with the regional saying and beliefs. Her granddaughters Amoli and Bayo love to pull her leg and trouble her harmlessly.
Character Sketch - Suman
A pregnant woman in her late thirties, Suman is Tukaram's wife. She's an uneducated rural woman but wise in homely affairs. She feels dejected when she sees her children starving, but is unable to do much about the circumstances. Her only shoulder to cry on is her husband. Although she is pregnant, she still shares farming responsibilities with her husband after finishing household chores. Quiet and soft spoken by nature, due to her rural upbringing and conditioning, she often is just a mute spectator to everything that happens around her.
Character Sketch - Beturam
Beturam tries to be a good father. He is already has a lot of loans from the Malik and has placed all his property in gurantee for loans. For his daugther's wedding he places he own daugther as gurantee so he can pay for the wedding costs in the hope that the crops he has grown will be enough to pay back his loans. This does not happen and Dhani takes his daugther away. Like any father hs is shattered and ashamed of his actions. Tukaram is a very supportive friend and tries to help Beturam as much as he can, however there is no escaping the Malik.
Character Sketch - Ganga
Ganga is Beturam's wife. She is a typical traditional indian wife who tries to be supportive. Like all other families she tries to hide the fact that her daugther was placed as gurantee to the Malik for money and that the Malik slept with her in order to free her. Like Beturam, Ganga confides in Suman, her friend. Ganga regrets the fact that she couldn't be the help Kaumodi needed and looks up to Suman for supporting Amoli.
Character Sketch - Kaumodi
Amoli's closest friend Kaumodi. Like Amoli she understand's what her family and Tukaram's family go through every year due to failure of crops to grow or other poverty-related reasons. Left as a gurantee for money by her father, Kaumodi had to pay the price of her freedom by sleeping with the Malik for a night. Kaumodi cares a lot for Amoli and is very supprotive towards her. She tried to prevent Amoli from going to the Malik but ultimately she couldn't do anything. Since her return, Kaumodi has not been the same. She can no longer see herself as pure but is willing to live such a life for the smiles of her family.
Characters from the Thakur's Haveli:
Character Sketch - Thakur Digvijay BhadoriaThakur Digvijay Bhadoria portrays the ideal husband, son and family man. He's rich and feared by the villagers. However, he is the man whose philandering ways get the protagonist of the show, Amoli, in trouble. Digvijay needs to have his way or he loses his temper, and when he loses his temper he will go to all lengths to achieve what he wants at the cost of the villagers.
Character Sketch - Malkin UrmilaA clean and honest hearted woman who doesn't know the truth about her husband. She worships Digvijay and trusts him blindly, not really knowing how bad he is treating the villagers. Urmila cares about her family, especially her daugther Chandana and is constantly being supportive. Whenever possible Urmila tries to help any villagers who might "bump" into her like Amoli did once. However, the Malkin has very little influence over the Thakur's decisions even though it appears she does. The Malik is very careful that the Malkin does not come in the way of his "work".
Character Sketch - Maa (Digvijay's mother)
Very little is known about her character. She makes the occasional appearances. From what has been aired, Digvijays mother is also unaware of what her son is doing behind her back. Like Urmila she is very supportive but at the same time authorative. Maa tends to favour Urmila quite often as she knows what it is like being the wife of a Thakur.
Character Sketch - Vinod
Vinod - Digvijay's friend and always smiling. He lives in the city and is visiting Digvijay. Vinod is a very clean hearted person who can't see the poor and needy being treated differently. He believes in equality and this is what surprises him when he gets to know the truth about Digvijay. Like a good firend, he constantly tries to influence Digvijay's mind and gives a lot of "moral" advice, however like the Thakur Digvijay is he doesn't take much interest in such advice. Digvijay feels that Vinod doesn't understand the system that works in villages and will always be a "city boy".
Character Sketch - DhaniDhani is like Digvijay's personal assistant. He knows all the inside information that the Malik hides from the rest of his family. Dhani, per commands, tortures the villagers for thier land, money and their daugthers which the Malik uses for his personal needs. The character is shown very stone hearted and has no feelings for villagers who beg for another chance. He is very smart and will go to all lengths to collect what belongs to the Malik.
Character Sketch - Chandana
Chandana, the daugther of Digvijay's older deceased brother. Urmila and Digvijay treat her like their own daugther. Chandana is girl from a rich family but is just as "sanskari" as a girl would be from a middle classed family. She is simple, knows how to respect and is always smiling. She is going to be married to Dipesh soon and is sligthly anxious about settling into a new family. Like Urmila, she is also unaware of Digvijay's secrets. Not much more is known about Chandana at this point.
Other characters:
Character Sketch - Digvijay's sister
Little is known about her. She has been shown a few times and similars Urmila as a character.
Character Sketch - Dipesh
Dipesh is going to marry Chandana. Once again little is known about this character.
