PriRa OS : Parallel Universe
Priya picked her phone which was buzzing every second. She clicked on the WhatsApp icon to look at what was going on in that one particular group chat where there were almost 60 messages now.
People were reacting with hearts and writing so cute and adorable to a certain video posted a while ago. “So strange that these ladies have no work to do on a Monday morning but gush on a stupid video” she thought annoyed. But curiosity got the best of her and she clicked on the video. The video loaded and she was shocked to see the person in the video. It was Ram. He was crying standing infront of Pihu’s school gate. Pihu was in his arms and every other parent who was coming to drop off their child passed weird looks to this middle aged man who was sobbing like a baby.
It was Pihu’s first day of school and Priya had to delegate this task to Ram as she had to take Meera for an early morning doctor’s appointment as she had recently undergone a heart surgery. “Of course, I should have known that he wouldn’t be able to handle this even though he was acting all macho in the morning.” She chuckled.
She could not help but smile at how cute he was looking. And, Pihu, her 4 year old baby was trying to console her daddy. She was going to call him but meera came back after getting the tests done and she had to go to the doctor’s cabin to consult on further treatment.
An hour later, she dropped her mother at Sood house and was going to go to her institute when she saw the message he had sent her sometime ago. He had texted to tell her that he was going back home after dropping off pihu at school instead of going to office. She sighed looking at the message and headed home.
There he was sitting on the bed with all the photo albums spread everywhere. Since the day Pihu was born, she had forgotten how many pictures he clicked every day. There was a time when everyday new frames were delivered at the Kapoor Mansion. They had tons of them filling the walls of their room and Pihu’s room. She had to strictly scold him to stop getting more frames because at this rate he was going to put the frames on the terrace as well.
He was so engrossed in his own world that he did not even realize when she had entered the room. “Ram, ye kya haal bna rakha hai room ka” She called him and picked some albums to make room for herself to sit next to him.
“What are you doing” she asked as he still kept on looking at those photos.
“Nothing, main free tha to aise he albums dekh raha tha” He replied and she could sense the sadness in his voice.
“Waise album se yaad aaya, apne ek video dekhi, kafi popular hui aaj subah social media pe” she decided to rile him up a little bit to change his mood.
“Kaunsi video?” he raised his brow. She pulled out her phone to show him the recording that was posted in the group. His horrified expressions at watching himself crying made her burst out in laughter.
“First day of school pihu ka tha. Main pareshan thi ki khin wo na ro pade lekin ye kya hai?” She teased him and added “aur koi to subah bahut confidence se bol rha tha ki main emotional nahi hun”
“Haan toh, aree aa gya rona bichare masoom bachon ka soch kr ki kitna torture jhelna pdega unko itne saal padhai krke. Isme galat kya hai” He tried to cover up by giving some lame excuse. “Aur ye galat hai, jo tum sab auraton ne milke kiya hai”
“Maine kya kiya” Priya asked him amused. “Ye kya parents whatsapp group bana rakha hai, ye sab krne ke liye bnaya hai ki logon ke husbands ko record krke discuss kren” He was annoyed that his secret was out.
“Aree you should be happy, you are so popular and look at the messages below the video ‘aww cutipie’, ‘so cute’, kisine to ye bhi likha hai ki father is cuter than the daughter. Priya narrated him those messages and he snatched the phone from her hand and locked it.
“Tum duniya ki pehli biwi ho jisi apne husband pe aise comments ache lag rhe hain” he complained. And Priya chuckled at his annoyance. She slid her arm around his neck and pulled him towards her and pecked his cheek softly and whispered “to usme kya hai, sach he hai ki you are cute” Over the years she had finally learnt to voice out her romantic thoughts as she knew her husband was someone who needed words as assurance.
“But isme itna rone wali kya baat thi. 3-4 ghante ke liye to gayi hai school. She would be back before you would even know” she tried to console him.
“Tumhe pata hai use bilkul dar nahi laga school ka. She just left my hand and walked away with her teacher. She was so happy to go to her classroom.” He said
She looked at her weird husband and exclaimed “to ye to achi baat haina”
“Kya achi baat hai, she does not need me anymore. Piche mud ke bye bhi nahi bola” he expressed his sadness.
Priya sighed. He had not lost his habit of overexaggerating. “Dekha maine end mein video ke kaise uski teacher ko zbardasti usko apki godi se utarna pada because you were not letting her go and she was getting late for her class” she mocked him.
“Tum aise kyun krti ho mere sath” Ram was annoyed that she was not supporting him. She took a deep breath and snaked her arm around his. She was also feeling sad as this meant a new start for Pihu and from hereon she would only become more and more independent and in turn less dependent on them. She missed Pihu’s toddler days. But she knew if she told Ram what she was feeling then it was only going to intensify his sadness. So the only way to get out of this feeling was to distract him.
He instinctively rested his head on her shoulder and said in a meek voice “I want another baby”
“Are you having another one of your mood swings” Priya joked. Every few weeks Ram would start baby jaap and Priya had started calling those his monthly mood swings where every discussion would end up with “I want another baby” demand and the same reply of “no” from Priya’s end.
“Priya yrr kya problem hai. I want a baby” He said and she let go off his arm and stood up. “Problem ye hai ki mera sara din to jo ghar mein 2 bache hain unke piche bhagne mein nikal jata hai” She replied as she started picking up the albums
“Dusra kaun” Ram asked innocently and Priya stared at him with a blank expression. Sometimes she could not understand if he was acting dumb or was actually dumb. “Wo jisne bed pr ye sab faila rakha hai” she said and continued stacking the albums in a corner.
“To fir tumne uss din raat ko haan kyun kaha” Ram asked and she turned around to look at him. What was he saying and when did she say yes to this. She racked her brain to which night he was referring and realization hit her. Day before yesterday, they were in the middle of their nightly pleasure session when he had cooed to her about having another baby. Of course she had agreed to whatever he was saying in the moment. But she did not know he would remember it and now he was going to nag her over this.
She was not against adding another member to their family but she felt content with him and pihu and now she was settled back in her job after taking a 3 year break. So planning another baby was going to disrupt the normal routine they had found just now.
She came out of her thoughts when she felt a tug at her dupatta. She looked at him. “Damn that face” she cursed him in her mind because she knew he was trying to convince her by making that sad lost puppy face. She had to distract him, otherwise she would end up agreeing to his demands.
“Acha chodo ye sab baatein, you did not even tell me about how she did on her first day” she asked.
“It was horrible” Ram said immediately and Priya looked at him stunned. “Kyun, what happened” she asked concerned about what went wrong.
“You know Pihu ka tiffin box car mein reh gaya aur jab main wapis dene gaya classroom mein..”
“wo rone lagi??” Priya asked worried.
“Nahi, she was sitting with a boy and they were colouring in the same drawing book together. Why cant he colour in his own book. Aur teacher ko mana krna chahiye. Bilkul akal nahi hai aajkal ke teachers ko” He replied annoyed.
Priya looked at him exasperated. “A boy who is also JUST 4 YEARS OLD” she stressed on the last bit as she could not believe on what tangent he was going. She knew he was protective of Pihu and if this was the state today then she shuddered to think what was going to happen once she grows up. She would have to keep him in check else he would go overboard on every occasion.
“And she even let him have her colour pencil” he added explaining his anger at the whole situation
Priya did a facepalm. He continued his rambling “tumhe pta hai na she does not let anyone touch her pencils. She cried when I touched it the last time aur usko aise he de diya!”
Priya could not help but laugh at his plight. “You are jealous of a 4 year old boy” she could not control her laughter.
“What! Main koi jealous nahi ho rha” he said but she still kept on laughing.
“I will talk to the boy’s parents and tell them to get him his own pencils and pack his drawing book every day. Nahi bhi ho drawing ki class tab bhi uske bag mein dalke bhejen!” he added and she tried to supress her laughter.
“You are not serious” she said to which he glared at her.
She straightened up as this was going out of hand. “No absolutely not, hume kisi parent se koi baat krne ki zrurat nahi hai. They can handle their kid on their own” She tried to drill some sense in him.
“Fir main parents teacher meeting pe complaint krunga teacher se” He was stubborn. Priya was losing her patience with him and now she had to be stern. “Hum aisa kuch nahi krenge, chlo get up, office jayie” she ordered him. “Ye devdas bnke albums dekhna band kijiye, she is going to be back in 1 hour” she scolded him.
“Main nahin ja rha, mera mann nahi hai” he replied and Priya sighed. He was literally a kid himself in a man’s body. She had to cajole him like a baby now. “Acha then how about hum ek saath pihu ko school se pick kren aur fir we can all go have ice cream” She offered.
His eyes immediately shined bright and his face broke into a smile. “Really, ice cream allowed hai?” he asked again as he could not believe his ears. She tried to keep pihu away from all sorts of junk food and in all this, his cheat meals which were anyway 2-3 times in a month were also cut down to just one time. No chocolates, no cookies, nothing. She had thrown everything away and the limited stock that came in the monthly groceries were locked up away from the father daughter duo after they were found raiding the kitchen even after multiple warnings.
“Haan, sirf aaj ke liye. Chalo lets go, usko pickup krne ka time bhi hone he wala hai” she grabbed his arm making him stand up.
She picked her purse and he got his car keys from the side table and they both moved out of the room.
“Ab ja he rha hun to uss ladke ke parents se baat bhi kr he lunga” he told her as they got in the car.
“Bilkul nahi” she replied and he started bickering with her again “ye kya har baat pr no no krti rehti ho, ye aadat bilkul nahi badli itne salon mein”. And this started another war of quarrelling between these two big kids who were headed towards the school to pick up their own kid.
