Breaking News: Broadcasters-TAM deadlock over with consensus on key issues

The stand-off ends with consensus on monthly data reporting, return to CPT model buying and threshold for niche channels' data

BestMediaInfo Bureau |Delhi | June 27, 2013

Followed by a meeting held last week between AAAI, ISA, IBF and TAM, the deadlock between broadcasters and ratings agency TAM is reliably learnt to be over. According to highly placed sources, the industry bodies have reached an understanding on some important issues paving the way for broadcasters to return to TAM.

According to these sources, an understanding on three major issues of "high importance" helped break the deadlock. Even though a final decision on these issues is yet to be announced formally, it is said that TAM and broadcasters have agreed on them in principal.

First, data will be reported on a monthly basis instead of the current weekly system. The second point on which the industry bodies seemed to have agreed upon is that buying will return to CPT model from CPRP and the data will be measured in 1,000s instead of shares. However, it is not clear whether TAM will continue reporting TSV (time spent per viewer). The third issue pertains to niche channels whose data will not be reported unless they achieve a certain threshold.

Broadcasters had started withdrawing from TAM data three weeks ago. Major broadcasters like Multi Screen Media, Times Television Network, NDTV Group, Star India, TV18, Viacom18, India TV and Sri Adhikari Brothers had written to TAM Media Research that they were suspending their subscription to TAM data. The broadcasters' decision was opposed by AAAI and ISA, and this is said to be the reason why all the industry bodies came together to resolve the deadlock with TAM.

While many broadcasters are already said to be back with TAM, others are yet to withdraw their decision.

Thanks for sharing..
i cld understand few points out of this..
1.Some talks going between broadcasters, advertisers, and TAM
2.some common connsensus achieved at-like reportng data on monthly basis and nt weekly.
3.They wnt rport data fore niche channels..
4.SO some broadcasters wld resubscribe..do nt knw whether its confirmed.esp whether Sony wld resubscribe or not-its nt clear.
rest was a bit difficult to understand..
So all i can summarise..that TAM 'may' be back with a new/revised rating system.

trp never gonna disappear
cause ad revenue drives all the channels
and sponsorz have not unsubscribed tam as they want the popularity ratings to decide ad rates

we shall see..it is nt as easy as we think..
and there are other ways also by which the ad rates are decided..
what do you think happened when TRPs were suspended for 9 weeks..?? channels got no money for the ads??
they do the rating system..bt the issues is the channels are unhappy with TAM readings and there are HUGE errors in the readings..
which effects.
1.The content of the shows.
2.Revenue.
so various other alternative options are being sought out. either TAM revises the way it provides the ratings(whcih this article talks abt) or by deploying some other agencies ..bt all this wld take time..
so in the interim we MAY face a rating blackout.
what i undestand is the ratings are necessary bt the faulty ratings are what the channles are protesting against.

yes there were no rating when digitilsation was being implement but cumulative rating for that period was released as soon as trp came back in 3 month time. there was thus not a single trp free day.
whether its faulty or not it will remain & weekly rating has been there persisted inspite of all this articles claiming channels withdrew
on its basis many shows went off air too so its being followed by all channel no matter what few online article says
