Idea of marriage

Many families in India go to great lengths to 'prepare' their daughters for marriage. 'Baat Hamari Pakki Hai' showcases this sentiment, writes Srabanti chakrabarti

Till few years back, people believed that marriages were made in heaven. Not any longer! Today a number of people believe that marriages are made on television! Riding on a wave of successful reality shows dealing with marriage, Sony has come up with a daily soap based on marriage and the way we look at it in the 21st century. Thankfully, it is not another reality show. It is a daily soap based on fictional characters and not real celebrities who throw tantrums every now and then. (It is strange how our likes have come a full circle in a few years' time. Reality shows were such a welcome change five years back and today we want to go back to soaps after getting tired of these scripted sagas!)

Sony's new serial, Baat Hamari Pakki Hai is produced by their trusted partners Tony and Deeya Singh (makers of Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin and Bhaskar Bharti), is based on what all Indian families do today to get their daughters married. Set in Mussorie, the story deals with the idea whether marriages are made in heaven and the fact that many families go to great lengths to make their daughters 'presentable' for marriage. Sounds too serious? A tear jerker in the making? If one goes by Sony's claims, that will not be the case. It is a light-hearted social drama; that is what the official release claims. The show revolves around an orphan Sachi who lives with her uncle and aunt. Sachi's marriage is the topmost priority for her uncle and for that very reason, throughout her childhood, she is groomed by her aunt and grandmother to become a good housewife. But here lies the twist — it's when she meets Shravan, a brat, who is very unlike herself, when the show takes an all new turn. Assures Deeya Singh, the producer of this show, "Every woman who has gone through the process of match making or going through it, will relate to the angst of Sachi."

She adds, "Every mother wants too see her daughter settled in life. When I was 21, I got an attractive job offer. When my mother got to know about it, she told me to take it up but avoid being ambitious as she expected me to get married soon," says Deeya who also hails from Dehradun. So is the story based on her life? "Not really, but selecting Dehradun as a backdrop was a decision taken on purpose. Since I am from that place, I felt that my research will be stronger, more realistic. But the characters or their traits are not specific to the place. What happens to them can happen to anyone. The content of the show is based on real life experiences of various people," clarifies Deeya.

Adds Ankita Sharma, the female lead of the show, "Deeya ji really convinced me that she sees Sachi in me. I am very thankful to her for putting so much confidence in me." Talking about her experience on stage, this one-show-old heroine says, "I am privileged to be sharing the space with so many experienced actors. Working with Mona Ambegaunkar and Himani Shivpuri is great and I pay heed to their suggestions almost everyday. What is great about the show is that it has a very fresh approach. I specially like the part where God gives certain indications after the couple meets. The dialogues of these scenes have been very well written," she says.

Barun Sobti, earlier seen in Shraddha and Dill Mill Gayye is the male lead of this show. He plays a character called Shravan, a guy with a modern outlook. But at the same time he is very careless and is not sure of settling down in life. As a result, he always refuses prospective marriage requests. Like Ankita, Barun also hails from Delhi.
After working in the corporate world for seven long years to tend to family responsibilities, he decided to take a plunge into the world of acting. So what does he think about the stark differences between Shravan and Sachi's personalities on the show? "That is the challenge as an actor," says a smiling Barun. "Whenever I come on screen, people laugh and whenever she comes on screen, everyone cries!"
Like most other shows where the story is based outside Mumbai, Baat Humari Pakki, was shot for a couple of weeks in Mussorie, after which, the crew came back to Mumbai where the entire set was re-created.

'Baat Hamari Pakki Hai' airs on Sony from Monday-Thursday at 8.30 pm.
