Actor Harsh Chaya sheds his staid image to play a seductress in 'Sabse Badaa Rupaiyaa'
Has television become regressive?
Acting on television is defined by fancy costumes, bindis, a twitch of an eye and some weird background track. If they had their way, they would have the insides of the actors' ears and nostrils lit up too. People have been doing the same thing for years and yet call themselves 'actors'! We have sons, daughters, fathers, mothers and grand parents all looking the same age. When there's nothing left in the story, they jump twenty years forward and if that gets boring, they jump fifty more!
As an actor, what is more satisfying -- television or films?
I turn to TV for work and fortunately I still manage to hunt out something interesting. But where feeling like a respected professional, and not a laboring donkey, is concerned, films win hands down.
What is the real Harsh Chaya like?
People politely call me 'laid back'. My wife calls me lazy and at times impatient. My feet are always on the ground. I do not hesitate to call a spade a spade. I love watching films; the good and the bad. I also enjoy still photography and day dreaming.
Is it true that romance, poetry and music are essentials for a creative person?
Any avenue that helps to refresh the mind and move away from the rigmarole of living in a positive way is important for all, not only actors.
What has been the finest compliment paid to you?
Mr Dilip Kumar once happened to come location-hunting where I was shooting. He could have just passed by if he chose to. But it was magnanimous of him to come to me and say that he had seen a bit of my work and found me to be one of the few good actors around.
What is exciting on the work front presently?
My latest show 'Sabse Badaa Rupaiyaa' is a comedy. I am playing a 'seductress' in one of the episodes to be telecast soon. I guess it is one of the best get-ups of a man turned into woman.
