Ariya OS: Prequel to A Year Later

She looked at him and let out a dejected sigh.

A week had passed since he had exacted revenge for the death of his late wife.

She was seeing him now after that when he came to the office to fulfill some of the formalities regarding Sikandar's case.

She looked at the man who seemed different or maybe lost.

His typical rage was gone. The fire in his eyes had disappeared. His usual blaze was nowhere to be seen.

And she found it frightening because all she could see was the hollowness.

Yeah, Riya Mukherjee was scared to witness the once strongest man turning into a broken one.

That was terrifying for her.

She wanted to hear his yelling, his commands, his taunts, and his angry voice right then.

This dreading silence didn't suit him.

She wished to see him react, but all she could witness was an enigmatic silence surrounding him that only frightened her.

She feared losing him.

Loose him??? Did he ever belong to her?

She closed her eyes to smother the pain she was causing herself as her inner voice mocked her.

Sitting alone in a secluded area, lost in his thoughts, he seemed to dwell in another world when a hand approached him.

He looked up and saw Rathore standing there and saying something.

For some seconds he couldn't get his words.

As Rathore placed some papers in front of him, he made an effort to concentrate and got a vague idea of what he was saying.

These formalities.....

He was becoming more and more involved in the situation the more he attempted to get out of it.

He just wanted to......... To??? Maybe run away.....

He signed the documents and handed them back to Rathore, who stood staring at him as though he had something to say, but Arjun didn't give him a chance to utter a word as he got up and walked out.

He could see his long-lost best friend was feeling guilty, and he wanted to apologize, but right now, he was not in a situation to listen to him or anyone.

All he wanted to do was vanish into thin air, leaving all emotions behind.

He was simultaneously broken and unconcerned.

At the same time, he felt overwhelmed and lost.

His own emotions were all over the place, and he was unable to pinpoint anything.

While walking aimlessly, he didn't realize the speedy truck approaching him.

Strangers' yelling voices around him attempted to alert him to the danger that was coming but he seemed oblivious to the situation.

Before his eyes shifted toward their hand gestures, he appeared perplexed by the yelling faces surrounding him. He then realized what was going on, but.....

............

Blank.

He was blank.

The shade of his eyes changed at that moment.

Something unreadable appeared in those black orbs.

The people around him were shouting, the truck was about to hit him.

Someone suddenly grabbed him, and the next thing he knew, he fell down with someone above him on the sidewalk.

What just happened?

He questioned himself when his black orbs met the angry eyes.

Why was she glaring at him?

As he watched her get up and dust her clothes, he pondered.

He got up as well, but he stumbled because she gave him a shove.

"What on earth?........"

He was shocked by her action.

She gave him another shove, ignoring his stares and perplexed look.

"What the heck is this Riya?"

He asked. His voice carried anger a bit, even though he did not yell.

He was shoved hard and his words were disregarded, causing him to stagger and nearly lose his footing, but he was able to stand and stared at her in shock.

The anger subsided, but the confusion and shock persisted.

"What are you trying to do?"

He inquired.

"What were you trying to do? Trying to kill yourself?"

She yelled, slamming her fist into his shoulder.

Startled, he gazed at her.

"I...I wasn't."

His response to her was insufficient, and his words were not complete.

She smiled sarcastically in return and inquired,

"Then why were you standing still?"

He averted his gaze when she asked, staring directly into his eyes.

He lacked the courage to meet her eyes as his thoughts returned to the moments when that fast-moving truck was coming toward him and he was standing motionless despite the voices yelling at him to get out of there.

He was not ready to accept, but deep down, he knew she was right. In his heart, there was a thief who knew that he had done it on purpose.

He stood there ready to embrace death because he was tired. He was tired of this life.

He was sick of existing.

Though he had successfully served justice to his late wife and exacted his revenge, what came next? He had no answers, either.

And the aimless roads in front of him were scaring him.

He was left with nothing but hollowness.

Hollowness was doing no good to him but only engulfing him inside.

"Why?"

She asked, approaching him close enough to make him meet those teary eyes.

And he was momentarily at a loss for words.

What was not in those eyes?

Hurt,

Fear,

Pain,

Terror,

And

The most frightening emotion was Love.

Love for him???

No!!!

He refused.

He denied what his heart whispered and his eyes witnessed.

He reasoned that this girl was not worthy of this. She truly deserved to be happy forever, and what could she possibly get from this broken man?

Misery, agony, anguish or grief?

His own heart ached at the thought and he stepped back.

He can't do this to her.

He can't pull her into the dark life of his.

He had to leave..........

He decided this at that very moment.

Once he would be out of her sight, it would be easier for her to move on. If only he could comprehend in that very moment the depth of her feelings for him.

Overwhelmed with everything, he turned around with a heavy heart, leaving his & her second chance behind; even though his heart kept on pointing something wrong. But he kept on moving, ignoring those alarms and the heartache that kept on increasing with each step of his.

Riya looked at him, confused & perplexed, as she saw him leaving without saying anything.

This sight was not going well with her. The increasing distance was telling her some other story. Even though she was feeling scared at the time, she managed to ignore the uneasy sensation.

After what she had seen a few moments before, she was afraid to leave him alone, but she let him go in the hopes of speaking with him later.

Unaware of the fact that this would be going to be a year later.

Arjun was a broken man. More so in all the ffs on the forums than he was in the show. Maybe the fans captured the emotions better than the CVs could portray.

The fact highlighting it all was always that Riya fell for a broken man whose heart was never hers to begin with. And she never even expected any reciprocation.

I loved how you kept the essence of the characters. Rathod, all silent yet always simmering with an untold apology. The silent analysis that Riya did on Arjun's mood. And Arjun, always lost in the shadows of his demons that never left him alone.

That fire, that blaze was always the revenge/vengeance, the sole purpose of his existence. It was aptly put when you said he lost it all and was left with just blank hollowness.

That truck scene was perfect. He might've never thought of ending his life by his own hands, but surely if the opportunity presented itself, he wouldn't deny the comfort that death would bring anyway.

It was also painful to realize that the last straw causing his decision to leave permanent, was the love in Riya's eyes. It always scared him, that unconditional love she had for him. And the fact that no one understood the true depth of that love. I mean how hard was it to realize that the girl had lost her heart to a man who was so utterly unattainable. A love that (apparently) would always be unrequited. After all, it was his love, passion and loyalty to his dead wife that made him so desirable.

I absolutely love this story. Maybe next time you could bring in another "A year later" where Ariya are together. A continuation to the "A year later" of their reunion and confession. Maybe this time they could play cupid for Adarsh or better yet something else entirely.

Keep Writing

And thanks for the tag

Ps. This is probably the first time, I'm first in comments. Feels good.
