I am no big expert but will try to explain as I percieve. Cant add to to the Indian Music part. Maybe someone can add to that.

The word "falsetto" evidently is a diminutive of "false", which means "to deceive". So the word "falsetto" would then mean "to deceive, but not so much".

Falsetto is also just a singing style. More than style I'd call it a "tool." A tool that one uses to adapt to styles when needed.

Falsetto singing = singing in a false voice or a voice which lies outside your natural singing range.

For the layperson: A falsetto is best demonstrated when a man attempts to sound like a woman by imitating a high pitched voice.

In traditional Indian music, you will not find place for falsetto; it is not considered as proper singing. However, in Western music it has been developed as an art form through yodeling, choral music, etc. Now its also finding a place in Hindi film music with some more frequency, though not as much as Western music.

Some examples where falsettos have been used in Hindi film music:

1. Kishore Kumar has done yodeling various times in Main hoon Jhumroo, Zindagi Ek Safar hai suhana and other such songs. He has also sung a song "Aake seedhi lagi dil pe" by taking out both male and female voices.

2. Kunal Ganjawala in Bheege Honth tere

In terms of Western music, you can listen to the Bee Gees for an excellent demonstration of falsetto singing by Barry Gibb in their hit single "Stayin' Alive".

It means singing in a higher (than your normal) pitched voice.

If you remember the song "Chalat Musafir Moh Liyo Re" from Teesri Kasam, the chorus refrain has the title line being sung an octave higher than normal. That's one example of falsetto singing.

i think he has a liking for such songs... even when he got selected, he had sung a song that had some high pitched notes and falseto...
