TV actor Sharad Kelkar says content has become diverse on the small screen as besides daily soaps a lot of "progressive" shows are being made today. "The content is a lot more diverse than before on television. Earlier it was just soap operas that were being made and watched but now there is so much that audiences can choose from. There are channels and shows that cater to a more progressive mindset of audience," Sharad told PTI. The 38-year-old actor known for his performances in serials like "Saat Phere - Saloni Ka Safar" and "Kuch Toh Log Kahenge", is back on the small screen with "Agent Raghav" after being part of films like Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Ram Leela" and Riteish Deshmukh "Lai Bhaari". "I am a restless soul. I am always in pursuit of something different and intriguing. So, instead of doing the same roles over and over again I decided to wait and take it slow. "Films such as Lai Bhaari' and Ram Leela' kept me occupied so I couldn't dedicate the kind of time television demands. Most of the TV offers I was getting clashed with my film assignments so I had to let go of a few shows as well," he said. Sharad will be seen essaying the character of Raghav Sinha, who works with the special unit of Crime Branch, in his upcoming show. "The premise of the show and my character attracted me to be part of the show. The protagonist Raghav Sinha doesn't use his muscle but brain to solve cases. He uses observation, deduction, and sharp intuitions to solve the most complex crime cases," Sharad said. "He (the character) is smart, stylish, and his weapon is words not guns. Also, it's a crime thriller and I haven't dabbled in this genre yet," he said.

How Sharad Kelkar became Agent Raghav

TNN | Sep 6, 2015, 12.00 AM IST | TV Interview
How Sharad Kelkar became Agent Raghav
Criminals have a new nightmare - Agent Raghav! Sharad Kelkar, who essays the role of the nifty officer in &TV's crime and mystery thriller 'Agent Raghav - Crime Branch', talks about what it takes to play a genius crime agent who uses the art of deduction to solve cases.

What prompted you to take up this role?

Here's a guy who is suave and dapper, with an IQ that can give even the most intelligent and shrewd criminal a run for his money. He can do things that very few can - read people's minds and use deductive reasoning. I haven't played such a character or taken up a crime series like this before. Besides, the premise of the show was unique and I couldn't let it go.

Deducing is your forte in the series... tell us more.

Agent Raghav's father was a hypnotherapist and psychiatrist from whom he picked up the tricks as a kid. Raghav has a razor-sharp mind that is quick at analysing and using rationale and logic, which is what deduction is all about. So, in the show, he reaches a logical conclusion about people and situations by applying the same theory while solving complex crimes.

How have you prepared for this role?

I've had to work on a lot of things. I needed to be fitter and more agile, because a languid guy cannot make an officer. So I toned up and have lost over 7kg since my last show. I have a few friends in the police force and have taken cues from them on how they react to situations. Apart from this, I have been reading books and have got some useful tips on how to read body language and analyse people.

Have you tried reading the minds of your family or friends?

Yes, I have been trying this at home and I'm now able to read my wife Keerti's mind well. Also, I have become a bit more observant of people's behaviour. I have learnt how mind readers manage to keep a calm face and read the mind, even before one says hello!

Agent Raghav: Isn't Sharad Kelkar's detective show like Sherlock Holmes and Psych?

The moment we saw the promo of Agent Raghav, Sharad Kelkar's new show on &TV, we had a strong feeling it was like Sherlock Holmes. Did we want to see yet another adaptation of the famous detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? Of course, not! And yet, there was something about Sharad Kelkar's acting that made us feel like watching it. He is one great TV actor (and film too) among the current crop.

And it seems other viewers feel that too, as the show has been trending on Twitter as #AgentRaghav. Sharad has received congratulatory messages on it. Agent Raghav premiered on Saturday, September 5 at 9 pm IST, and its second episode will be telecast on Sunday, September 6.

We still think Agent Raghav is like Sherlock Holmes, most recently adapted into the TV shows Sherlockand Elementary, as also the movie starring Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law.

Agent Raghav also reminds us of TV shows like Psych and The Mentalist. But Sharad Kelkar makes it worth it! And good for those who don't watch English shows or films, and haven't read The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Our rating for Agent Raghav would be 3.5 stars. What's your opinion?
