“So?” Sharon stared at Rey.
“The doctor said its nothing. Just a couple of days of rest and I’ll be fine.” Rey smiled at her.
Armaan rolled his eyes adjusting a pillow beneath Rey’s leg. Swayam noticed it and squinted.
“I don’t think that’s all there is!” Rahul said over the video call.
“I agree!” Riri affirmed.
“Armaan, tum hi bata do. Kya kaha doctor ne.” Juhi asked him.
“Maami relax. He’ll be fine.” Armaan assured her first. “He has strained the ligament in his ankle. He just needs proper rest for a month, month and a half. And he’ll be fine after that.” He informed them.
“No fracture, right?” Muskaan enquired.
“Bola na bhai ne. Kuch nahi hua hai!” Rey was annoyed seeing everyone stare at him.
“Doctor also said ki agar thoda aur late hota toh he could have torn his ligament.” Armaan added.
“What?” Taani exclaimed.
“I knew he was hiding something!” Swayam glared at Rey.
“Bhai?” Rey gritted his teeth at Armaan in disbelief.
“Stop taking things lightly! Kuch serious hojata toh?” Sharon yelled at Rey.
“Hua nahi na? Toh chill!” He yelled back.
“Hone tak ka wait karna tha tumhe?” Taani glared at him.
“What the hell is wrong with you guys?” Rey snapped at them.
“Doctor ne isse rest karne bola hai. Chalo bahar sab.” Rannvijay pushed everyone out of Rey’s room.
“Armaan, send me his file.” Rahul said before disconnecting.
“Maa agar aap ko bhi chillana ho toh baad mein aana.” Rey faced the other direction when he saw Juhi come near his bed.
“Bhook lagi hai? Kuch lau?” She asked running her hand over his head.
“Maa theek hoon yaar main. Aap please tension mat lo.” He took her hand in his. “Waise bhi ek week ke liye meko iss bed se koi hilne nahi dene wala.” He groaned.
“Sahi kaha!” Juhi chuckled. “Abhi thodi der rest karlo. I’ll get dinner after that.” She made him lie down and left.
“AB aur kya bola hai doctor ne?” Sharon asked Armaan.
“One week complete rest. Uske baad he can definitely walk around the house, but someone needs to be with him. Leg pe thoda bhi strain nahi aana chahiye.” Armaan narrated the doctor's instructions.
“It’s going to be a task!” Rannvijay sighed.
“Kyun?” Taani furrowed her brows.
“He hates sitting in one place!” Juhi joined them downstairs.
“Worst, he hates being told what to do!” Sharon rolled her eyes.
“Toh abh?” Taani looked at them.
“We’ll have to make it look like we aren’t keeping a watch on him while keeping a watch on him.” Armaan said.
“Aur yahin karne hum yahan aaye hai!” The rest of the gang joined.
“Oh great, you guys are finally here. Kitna time lagta hai aane mein?” Sharon scolded them.
“Traffic dekha hai bahar?” Vicky replied.
“Plan kya hai?” Taani asked.
“Tum log socho. I’ll go and prepare dinner.” Juhi excused herself.
“Aunty kuch accha banana.” Vicky yelled behind her.
“Haan, bohot bhook lagi hai.” Nil joined him.
“Can you two focus?” Simmi looked at them.
“Sure, anything you say!” Nil grinned at her. Simmi just rolled her eyes at him.
“So we need to make sure that someone is with him all the time. Uss aadmi pe bilkul bharosa nahi hai meko. Bore hua usse toh pata nahi kahan chal pade.” Swayam stated shaking his head at Rey.
“Subah ke time anyone of us can be here.” Aashi said.
“And do what?” Sharon asked her.
“We’ll come up with something.” Neha calmed her down.
“Evenings mein we can take turns.” Sharon looked at Swayam and Taani.
“Uski jarurat nahi padegi.” Amar commented hinting the boys.
“Haan shaam ko Taani ko uske room mein band kar denge. Hojayega kaam!” Bharat laughed.
“Exactly!” Nil agreed.
“He definitely won’t be leaving the room then.” Vicky smirked.
Taani just stared blankly at them while the others tried to stop themselves from bursting into laughter.
“Tum log plans banao. I have to leave now.” Armaan got up diverting their attention from Taani.
“Kya hua?” Rannvijay asked him.
“Just a little tired.” Armaan rubbed his neck.
“Bhai aap jao. We’ll figure stuff out.” Swayam told him.
“Arre haan Sharon, meeting ki file abhi tak mere paas nahi aayi hai.” Armaan looked at her.
“Kaunsi meeting?” She asked.
“Ayush..”
“Rey attended it.” Sharon stopped him. “Manas ko bolti hoon. She’ll send it to you.”
“Ayush?” Neha squinted.
“Hey, yeh toh Sharon ke ex ka naam tha. Remember guys?” Rinni's eyes sparked as she recalled it.
“Wow Rinni tujhe yeh yaad hai par do din pehle jo maine kaha voh nahi.” Simmi rolled her eyes at her.
“Kya kaha tha?” Rinni asked.
“See!” Simmi shook her head.
“Wow Sharon, tu Ayush ke saath kaam karne wali hai?” Vicky teased her.
“I am not working on that project. And I don’t want to hear his name!” Sharon stormed off.
“Guys, seriously?” Swayam looked at them.
“Aye tu chup reh haan!” Nil shut him.
“Hello?” Taani waved her hand in front of them.
“Hi!” Vicky and Nil waved back at her.
“We are going off topic!” She glared at them.
“Arre abhi toh decide hua!” Neha exclaimed.
“Kya?” Taani squinted at her.
“You go upstairs and keep him occupied!” Aashi pushed Taani up the stairs.
“Kyun usse tang kar rahe ho tum log?” Rannvijay chuckled after Taani left.
“Arre uncle aapko toh pata hai ki abhi hum upar gaye toh voh hume room ke bahar nikalega. Let her go and calm him down first.” Nil laughed.
…
Taani entered Rey’s room and found him sleeping peacefully. She carefully closed the door behind her and quietly made her way to the bed. She settled herself at the edge of it taking extra care to not cause excessive movement. She looked at his leg rested on the pillow and sighed.
“Kitne careless ho tum apni health ko leke. Aur thoda delay karte toh kitne severe consequences hote.” Taani shook her head thinking about his injury. “He looks so peaceful while sleeping.” She adored him and stretched her arm to touch his face and stopped. “It might wake him up.” She retreated her hand back.
Taani heard vibrations and she looked at the side table and saw his phone ringing. She ran to it and picked it up. She walked to the window and answered the call.
“Apni taang kahan ghoosa raha tha ki Taani ne tod di?” Sara chuckled from the other end as soon as the call was connected. “Oh! Hi. Taani.” She awkwardly smiled into the phone when she saw Taani.
“Hi.” Taani replied smiling awkwardly back at her.
“Rey?” Sara asked.
“So raha hai.” Taani answered.
“Oh! Tell him I had called.”
“Yeah.” Taani nodded.
“I.. uh.. I’ll see you later?” Sara asked unsure.
“Yeah. Bye.” Taani smiled lightly and disconnected the call.
Taani turned around and saw Rey stirring in his sleep. She walked back to his bed and placed the phone down next to him.
“Ahh!” He groaned.
She looked at his leg which had shifted. She lifted it and placed it back properly on the pillow. He woke up feeling some movement.
“Taani?” He looked at her with half open eyes.
“Go back to sleep.” She sat next to him and ran her hand in his hair.
“Hmmn.” He smiled content closing his eyes. “Tum upar kab aayi?”
“That’s not important. So jao.” She pulled her hands out of his hair making him pout.
“Chali gayi neend.” He opened his eyes and looked at her.
“Doctor ne tumhe rest karne bola hai.” She reminded him.
“Bed pe leta hoon. Aur kitna rest karu?” He scoffed and got up.
“Pain ho raha hai?” She adjusted the pillow by his leg as he sat resting against the head rest.
“Not so much. It just pains when I try to move it.”
“Then don’t!” She glared.
“Tum toh mat chillao yaar.” He pouted.
“Don’t try to act cute with me!” She pointed a finger at him.
“Won’t work?” He scrunched his nose.
“No!” She giggled.
“It kinda did.” He winked.
“Hogayi masti?” She shook her head at him. He nodded. “Good.”
“Tum upar kab aayi?” He asked.
“Bas kuch der pehle. You were sleeping so peacefully that I didn’t want to wake you up.”
“Come here.” He gestured her to sit close to him.
“Yes?” She sat next to him.
“Nothing. Just feels good to sit beside you.” He supported his head on her shoulder.
“Yeh kya medicine ka side effect hai? Aise kyun behave kar rahe ho?” She chuckled.
“Shut up!” He frowned. “ Sabki daant khane ke baad I deserve this solace.”
“Daant shayad aur padne wali hai.”
“Kya matlab?”
“Your friends are here. Dinner ke baad dessert mein tumhe unki daant khani hai.” She laughed.
“Nahi yaar.” He groaned. “Sharon ne hi bulaya hoga sabko.” He frowned.
“I think she must have also told Sara about this.” Taani said.
“Why do you think so?” He looked at her.
“She had called.” She told him.
“Kya bol rahi thi?”
“Kuch nahi. She asked you to call her back.” Taani informed.
“You didn’t talk to her, na?” Rey chuckled.
“It was awkward. Especially after the last time we met.” Taani lowered her head.
“That was months ago. Kya voh sab leke baithi ho tum?”
“I didn’t read the name before answering. Aur phir usse saamne dekh kar I got all awkward.” Taani explained.
“But why were you answering my calls?” He squinted.
“I didn’t want you to wake up because of it.”
“Hum disturb toh nahi kar rahe na?” Aashi entered followed by the rest of the gang.
“Nahi, tum sabki hi kami thi.” Rey rolled his eyes.
“Plaster kahan hai? Sharon bol rahi thi ki serious hai kuch?” Vicky asked looking at his leg.
“Tu kya usko seriously le raha hai.” Rey hushed him. “Waise voh hai kahan?”
“She left.” Swayam informed. Rey raised his brow at him. Swayam shook his head telling him to let it go.
“So Rey kya plan hai?” Simmi wiggled her brows at him.
“Plans toh bohot hai par kuch kar nahi sakta!” He cursed looking at his leg.
“Hume bata do. We’ll help you.” Rinni chirped.
“Chup reh na behen!” Vicky facepalmed.
“Sure Rinni, I’ll give you guys all my pending work.” Rey smirked.
“Hum yahan itne concerned hai about your injury aur teko kaam ki padi hai.” Nil sat at the edge of the bed.
“Oh shut up! I know you guys are here to gloat about it!” Rey rolled his eyes.
“Obviously!” Aashi burst out laughing followed by others.
“What a heavy price for the win!” Vicky mocked.
“Bohot jyada udd raha tha na uss din jitne par. Dekha uska nateeja.” Amar joined him.
“Swayam?” Rey looked at him for help.
“Guys!” Swayam came forward asking them to stop. “Remember the jump?” He hopped mimicking Rey’s jump making everyone laugh.
“F*ck off!” Rey huffed.
“Dinner ready hai.” Juhi called from downstairs.
“Rey tu rest kar haan.” Vicky said.
“Haan, we won’t take much of your time.” Simmi smiled.
“Stop faking concern and just leave. Dikh raha hai kitne bhukkad ho tum sab!”
They all ran out of his room.
“Tu kahan chali?” Rey stopped Taani as she got up.
“Tujhe dekh kar uska pait nahi bharne wala.” Swayam mocked.
“What is with all the teasing? Tum log kabhi normally baat nahi kar sakte kya?” Taani frowned.
“Yeh normal hi hai.” Swayam smiled slyly.
“Whatever!” Taani left.
“So big boy, should we tone down the teasing?” Swayam asked referring to what Taani said.
“Not at all! Are you mad? Uska irritated face dekhne bohot maza aata hai.” Rey chuckled.
“Saale!” Swayam laughed and settled on the bed.
“Waise Sharon itni jaldi kyun chali gayi?” Rey asked after they stopped laughing.
“Hum baat kar rahe the aur Ayush ka naam aaya. And then she got awkward.” Swayam sighed.
“Ayushman Suck-sena!” Rey rolled his eyes.
“Oh I had completely forgotten about that one!” Swayam laughed.
“Dinner’s here.” Taani walked in with a tray of food in her hand.
“Thanks!” Swayam took it from her and placed it in between Rey and himself on the bed.
Taani stood there staring at him awkwardly as he adjusted himself in.
“Kya hua?” Swayam looked at her.
“Nothing.. I’ll..” Taani hesitated and turned around to leave.
“Wait.” Swayam stopped her. “You can ask me to leave. I won’t mind.” He smiled at her.
“Nahi main bas..” Taani tried to think of something.
“I’ll see you later dude!” Rey looked at Swayam.
“Bye! Have fun you two!” Swayam left.
“Taani?” Rey called her to him. “What’s wrong luv?” He asked.
“I didn’t want to sound rude. Tum dono kuch baat kar rahe the.” She sat with her head lowered.
“Isme rude kya hai?” He made her look at him.
“I don’t know. It just felt weird to ask him to leave.”
“Itna toh haq hai tera mujh par.” He smiled at her.
“Mujh par?” Taani raised her brows at him. “Not bad, you’re learning to speak properly.”
“Sangat ka asar toh padega hi na.” He grinned at her.
“Why are you being so sweet towards me?” She raised her brow and started eating.
“Pyaar aa raha hai yaar, kar raha hoon.” He picked up his plate.
“Aaj kal kuch jyada hi nahi aaraha?” She asked.
“Koi problem hai?”
“Mujhe kyu hogi?” She looked down and smiled widely.
“Good!” He reciprocated the smile.
“May I come in?” Taani knocked on the door and opened it.
“Oh you guys are back already?” Ayushman looked up at the door.
“Gauri actually left directly from there.” Taani informed as she walked in.
“Haan usne bola tha ki ghar pe kuch urgent kaam aagaya hai uske. No worries.” He asked her to sit.
“Sab colleges ke floor plans mil gaye hai and we discussed a few ideas during the visits.” Taani informed.
“Haan Gauri ne presentation bheja hai which I need to complete. And I need your help with it!” He looked at Taani.
“Yeah sure.” She replied.
Taani and Ayushman worked for two straight hours completing the presentation. After they were done they sat with their heads hung back on the chairs, exhausted.
“I think we should go over it.” Ayushman suggested after a while.
“Again?” Taani asked.
“Yeah you’re right, we just did that. I guess I’m a little nervous about the meeting tomorrow.” He sighed.
“But we are on track with the project. Right?” Taani asked turning a little nervous now.
“Yeah. It’s just stupid to think of it but I was told that Armaan Mallik will be joining us tomorrow in the meeting aur shayad ussi wajah se thoda..” He chuckled lightly at himself.
“I’ve heard he is very serious when it comes to work.” Taani smiled.
“You worked there right?” Ayushman knotted his brows.
“He wasn’t in Mumbai when I was doing my internship.” She answered.
“I know he’ll be in the meeting for formality par main hi faaltu ka personal pressure le raha hoon.” He shook his head.
“I’m sure we’ll be okay.”
“Yeah! I’ll go over the presentation one more time. You should leave. It’s way past your office time.” He looked at his watch.
“It’s seven-thirty?” Taani was surprised looking at the time. “Marr gayi!” She muttered under her breath.
“Kya hua ghar jaane ki koi deadline hai?” He joked.
“Nahi bas abhi traffic bohot milega and uber pe surge price bohot hoga.” She sighed.
“You know what.” He got up. “I’ll drop you.”
“It’s okay. I’ll manage.” She got up behind him.
“Meri wajah se aaj late hua hai. Allow me.” He insisted.
“We were working on something important. Also, I live all the way in Colaba.” She tried to deny.
“I stay at Kemps. Chalo abhi.” He picked up his laptop and left.
“My bag is in the other room. I’ll get it.” She excused herself.
She picked up her bag and walked out of the office. Her phone rang and she answered it seeing Rey’s name.
“Why are you not here?” He complained as soon as she picked the call.
“What?” She furrowed her brows.
“Tu mujhse milne kyu nahi aayi?” He asked.
“I was there two days ago..”
“Exactly! Do din se tum milne nahi aayi ho!”
“I had a lot of work. Main abhi bhi office mein hoon! And why are you complaining so much?” She scolded him.
“Yaar do din se Shar mera dimaag kha rahi hai! I need a break from her!” He pouted.
“Pagal!” She laughed. “Aaj bohot thak gayi hoon. Kal pakka aaungi.”
“Pakka na?” He confirmed.
“Haan!” She assured.
“Okay!” He sighed.
“Bye! I’ll call you later.” She disconnected the call and walked out of the office.
“Chale?” Ayushman walked up to her.
She got in the car followed by him and they drove off.
“I’m really sorry. Aaj time pe bilkul bhi dhyaan nahi tha.” Ayushman apologized.
“It’s fine.” She replied.
Taani’s phone rang again and she picked it up excusing herself.
“Tu kidhar hai?” Purvi asked from the other end.
“Main abhi just nikli office se.” Taani replied.
“Exact location?” Purvi asked.
“Just reached the highway.” Taani informed.
“Great! My Uber just broke down and I’m stuck in the middle of the highway!” She huffed. “Pick me up!”
“Tera location share kar. I’ll give you a call when I reach there.” Taani informed and disconnected.
“All good?” Ayushman asked her.
“My friend is stuck near Andheri. If you don’t mind, can we pick her up?” Taani asked him, looking at Purvi’s message.
“Yeah no problem at all.” He agreed.
“Thanks.”
“You’re very soft spoken.” He smiled at her.
“Haan voh..” She looked down embarrassed.
“I’m not passing a judgement. I’m just saying that it’s a good quality to have.” He clarified seeing her get uncomfortable.
“How did you start XID?” Taani asked after a while to start a conversation as they were stuck in traffic and there was no escape.
“I always wanted to. Dad ko idea pitch kiya. He saw how passionate I was with it and I managed to get him to fund my startup.” He smiled proudly.
“Pitch as in like a proper business proposal?” Taani asked.
“Yeah with all the possible strategies of how to grow in the market.” He answered.
“Sounds like your father was very strict about it.” She smiled.
“If you pitch something to your father, I’m sure he’ll too want to make sure that you are serious about it. Right?” He asked.
“If he were here, yeah!” She agreed. She had a faraway look in her eyes.
“Oh I’m sorry.” He quickly apologized.
“It’s okay. You didn’t know.” She smiled.
“So, tell me more about yourself. What is Taani Raichand like?” He asked changing the subject.
“Matlab?” She asked.
“Matlab, apart from work, what else do you like to do?”
“I..” She thought. “Nothing actually.” She answered.
“Really? What do you do in your spare time?”
“I’m usually watching something on Netflix.”
“Kuch toh hobby hogi. Reading, cooking?”
“Aaj tak realize nahi hua, but no I don’t have any hobby.” Taani answered lost in her thoughts.
“You can still develop something.” He assured her.
“Yeah.” She looked at her phone and saw that they were closing in on Purvi. “My friend is nearby.” She dialed her.
“Kahan hai yaar? It’s so hot here!” Purvi huffed.
“I’m almost here. Tujhe white BMW X3 dikh rahi hai last lane mein?” Taani asked.
“Teri Uber BMW kyun hai?” Purvi furrowed her brows.
“Shut up! Tu thodi road pe aa I’m trying to find you.”
“Haan.” Purvi walked ahead. “I see one BMW. No wait, that’s a sedan.”
“Tere aaju baju kya hai?” She asked.
“You’ve started to sound like a true Mumbaikar.” Purvi laughed.
“Purvi!” Taani said sternly.
“Haan, there is a tree beside me.”
“And?” Taani asked in the same tone.
“Wait, I see an SUV.” Purvi read out the number plate.
Taani repeated it and Ayushman nodded.
“Haan wahi hai. Walk towards it. I still can’t see you.” Taani instructed her.
Purvi walked ahead and finally Taani spotted her. She told the driver to stop where Purvi was standing. She got in and they moved ahead.
“Hi. I’m Purvi.” She introduced herself to Ayushman. “You are her boss, right?” She confirmed.
“Yes.” Ayushman shook her hand.
“Thanks for the lift.” She thanked him. “My Uber broke down and there was nothing else available. Yahan se station bhi bohot durr tha toh maine ghar call kiya aur Shivam bhai ne bataya ki tu bhi abhi tak aayi nahi hai.” She explained ahead.
“You both stay together?” He asked.
“Yeah, we’re neighbors.” Purvi smiled.
“Tujhe itna late kyun hua aaj?” Taani asked Purvi.
“All thanks to Rey!” Purvi rolled her eyes. “Mansi ma’am ne jo jhada hai usse.” She laughed recalling that.
“Kya kiya usne?” Ayushman asked amused.
“I shouldn’t be telling you all this.” Purvi hesitated.
“We are friends. He won’t mind.” He assured her.
“Okay, if you say so.” Purvi began. “So kal jo humari meeting hai uska presentation ma’am ne google slides pe banaya tha as it’s easier for everyone to edit, if necessary. Rey decided that since he is bored sitting at home, he will look at it. Aur phir usse masti sujhi and he toyed around with it. Uske baad ma’am saw it just before leaving and she went crazy as that was the only file and then we had to redo it entirely.” She narrated.
“Oh God I can imagine how angry she must have gotten.” Taani laughed.
“Pagal hai yaar yeh poora.” Ayushman laughed at Rey.
“Tujhe bhi late hua aaj.” Purvi pointed out to Taani.
“Haan same reason.” Taani answered.
“Kya? Rey?” Purvi asked tongue in cheek.
“No, I kept her waiting.” Ayushman answered.
“Yeah we were working on the presentation for tomorrow as well.” Taani replied.
“Tujhe aaj Shivam bhai ka call aaya tha?” Purvi asked Taani.
“Nahi kyu?”
“He had called me to ask if I was free tomorrow. I thought you knew something about it.” Purvi shrugged.
“Whose brother is he?” Ayushman asked confused.
“He is my elder brother. Yeh bhi unhe bhai bulati hai.” Taani told him.
“You know, I always wanted to have an elder brother. The closest I got to call anyone bhai was calling Armaan bhai.” Ayushman smiled reminiscing.
“Tumhare college ka har banda unhe bhai bulata hai kya?” Purvi chuckled.
“Pretty much every guy that I can recall of.” He thought. “Except one actually.” He chuckled.
“Even girls called him bhai?” Taani squinted.
“I said guys.” He pointed out.
"Right, sorry."
“Who didn’t call him bhai?” Purvi asked him to continue.
“His best friend in college. They were very close to each other. Humesha doubt aata tha unhe dekh kar.” He chuckled.
“Kaisa doubt?” Taani squinted.
“We were young back then, and very averse to accept homosexuality.” Ayushman justified himself first and then continued. “No one accepted in the open that they were gay back then.”
“He is not gay!” Purvi laughed.
“Armaan bhai nahi unka best friend, Sid. I’m pretty sure he was gay.”
“So you guys bullied him for being gay?” Taani raised her brows and glared at him.
“No one bullied him!” He denied immediately. “Yeah a few people talked ill about him, but we never bullied him.”
“I’m sorry.” Taani looked away.
Purvi saw the quizzed look on Ayushman’s face and said, “Sid is her cousin.”
“Really?” He looked at Taani. She nodded. “Wow, it’s such a small world.” He smiled.
…
The meeting ended. It went better than expected for all of them. By the end of it they were ready with their plan of action for the project and had set a possible deadline of three months. They hung out for a while in the meeting room.
“It’s so good to see you man!” Armaan hugged Ayushman.
“Aapko pata nahi main kitna nervous tha iss meeting ke liye.” He hugged him back.
“Really? A-man was nervous?” Armaan chuckled.
“Oh God! Sharon!” Ayushman covered his face laughing in embarrassment. “Trust her to give such weird acronyms. Aapko abhi bhi AB bulati hai?”
“Yeah!” Armaan nodded.
“I miss those days yaar.” He sighed.
“Waise, I’m really surprised to know ki tu single hai. Koi mili nahi?” Armaan asked.
“Kai mili. Koi tiki nahi.” He sighed and looked up. His eyes fell on Taani and they lingered for a bit.
“Oyye? Kahan kho gaya?” Armaan clicked his fingers in front of his eyes.
“Count kar raha tha kitni thi.” Ayushman chuckled.
“Karte baith. Main chala, I need to pack. I have a flight tomorrow evening aur kal subah bilkul time nahi milne wala mujhe!” Armaan sighed thinking of his schedule for the next day.
“Melbourne?”
“London, actually.”
“Have a safe journey!” Ayushman hugged him.
“Thanks. Bye.” Armaan left.
“Ayush, chale?” Gauri walked to him.
“Abhi office jaane ka koi matlab nahi banta. I think we should disperse from here.” He said looking at the time.
“Theek hai, main Taani ko bata deti hoon.” She said.
“Yeah! Bye.” He left.
On his way out he bumped into Sharon. They both looked at each other and stood awkwardly facing one another.
“Hey.” He smiled lightly.
“Hi.” She replied.
“Kaisi ho?” He asked.
“Ayu..” She said and he cocked his brow. “I need to go. Swayam is calling me.” She said avoiding looking at him.
“I wanted to talk.” He stopped her from leaving.
“Abhi I’m busy. Phir kabhi.” She walked off.
He turned around and saw Swayam standing with Taani near the canteen.
“Tum yahan ho?” He walked towards them.
“Haan.” Taani replied.
“No, I meant Swayam. Sharon was looking for you.” Ayushman pointed behind him.
“She just left from here. Anyway, I’ll see her. Thanks.” Swayam left.
“Great! She was avoiding me!” He muttered.
“All good?” Taani asked.
“Yeah, I guess.” He shook his head. “Chale?”
“Kahan?” She asked.
“Did Gauri not tell you?” He squinted.
“Yeah, I was just leaving.” She smiled.
“I was offering to drop you.” He smiled back.
“I’m driving today. Thanks.” She left bidding bye.
“Second rejection of the day. Good going Ayush!” He patted himself and walked out of the office.
…
“Hello uncle!” Taani walked in.
“Tumhe kya Rey ne ghar ki spare key deke rakhi hai?” Rannvijay narrowed his eyes at Taani.
“Uncle door open tha.” She chuckled.
“Kahan thi itne din?” He called her to sit with him.
“Office mein bohot kaam tha pichle kuch din.” She sat in front of him.
“Job lagne ke baad party toh door tumne mujhe batana bhi zaroori nahi samjha?” He faked anger.
“Sorry.” She held her ears. “Aap batao, kahan treat chahiye?” She asked.
“Bahar kyun? Tum hi kuch banake khila do.” He smiled.
“Aapko treat chahiye ya torture?” She laughed.
“Rey se bohot suna hai tumhari cooking ke baare mein. Socha mujhe bhi taste karne ka chance milna chahiye.” He told her.
“He praised my cooking?” She asked surprised.
“Haan!” He affirmed. “He really likes it.”
Taani broke into a grin.
“Toh mujhe kab khila rahi ho?” He asked.
“Bohot jald!” She smiled widely. “Abhi main milke aati hoon Rey se.”
Taani ran up the stairs to Rey’s room. She opened the door wide and saw him sitting on his bed busy playing on his Nintendo switch. He looked at the door and before he could comprehend anything, she came running to him and hugged him tight.
“Hi?” He responded unsure.
“I love you!” She hugged him tighter.
“I love you too, but I’m in the middle of a game.” He replied sheepishly freeing his arms.
“Rey?” She separated and scoffed.
“I’m almost done, luv.”
She folded her arms across her chest and looked at him sternly.
“Okay.” He placed it down and pulled her to him.
Her head landed on his lap and she started laughing seeing his eyes shut for making her fall.
“I love you!” She flicked his nose making him open his eyes and adjusted herself on his lap.
“Kya baat hai, aaj bada pyaar aaraha hai?” He subconsciously started playing with the strands of her hair.
“Koi problem hai?” She chuckled.
“Bilkul bhi nahi.” He leaned down and pecked her nose making her giggle.
“I’m so happy today!” She grinned.
“I can see that!” He smiled.
“Tumhe pata hai, aaj Ayushman praised me in the meeting for my work. He said that they were lucky to have me on board. Also, Mansi ma’am told me that I did a great job. Tabse main bas uchchal rahi thi kisiko yeh batane ke liye.” She narrated animatedly. “Aur meeting ke baad na Armaan bhai ne bhi mujhe praise kiya.”
“Congratulations!” He adored her.
“Yeh toh kuch bhi nahi.” She looked at him with a wide grin. “Abhi mujhe neeche Paa ne bataya ki tumhe mere haath ka khana bohot accha lagta hai.”
“Tu itne pyaar se banati hai kaise nahi pasand aayega.” He smiled back.
“Hearing that just made my day!”
“Really?” He asked raising his brow.
“Haan! Mujhe cooking jara bhi pasand nahi thi. So to hear compliments about it is a huge deal!”
“I did not compliment you in front of Paa.” Rey denied.
“Paa jhoot kyun bolenge?” She asked him.
“Paa?” He pointed out.
She realized that she was calling Rannvijay, Paa and sat up straight on the bed. She turned to Rey and sat cross legged next to him.
“Is it okay if I call him Paa?” She asked meekly.
“No.” He answered.
“Kyun?” She looked at him and saw him smiling at her. “Kyun mazak kar rahe ho?” She pouted.
“Meko kya problem hogi?” He pulled her closer.
“He is your Paa.” She said.
“He can be yours too, if you want.”
“I want to but unke saamne kehne ko weird lagta hai.” She leaned on his shoulder.
“Bol ke toh dekh.” He encouraged.
“What if he doesn’t like it?” She panicked.
“He’ll love it, trust me.” He squeezed her in his arms.
“Par fir aunty ko bura laga toh?” She furrowed her brows.
“Then start calling her Maa.”
“Haan.” Taani replied unsure.
“Kya itna soch rahi ho? Jo naturally nikle dil se voh bulao. Kisiko bura nahi lagega.” He kissed her forehead.
“Aunty how’s your cookbook coming along?” Rey asked Tanya.
“You saved the day for me!” She smiled at him.
“You’re publishing a new book?” Juhi asked her.
“Haan, it’s a small one with some unconventional recipes.” Tanya informed.
“Isne aisi kya help kardi?” Rannvijay asked pointing at Rey.
“I needed one last recipe. Par kuch sujh nahi raha tha. Phir isne aake palak spaghetti suggest kiya. Pehle mujhe odd laga but it worked out really well.” Tanya praised Rey.
“Palak spaghetti?” Juhi made an unpleasant face.
“I know it sounds odd, but tasty tha. Mom did some magic to it.” Shivam praised.
“I tweaked it a bit, but it was Rey’s idea.” Tanya gave him the credits.
“Paa don’t give me that look. I won’t be able to make it for a month, even if I wanted to!” Rey sulked at Rannvijay.
“I wasn’t even going to ask you to. Mere liye toh Taani kuch cook karne wali hai.” He replied proudly looking at Taani.
“Uncle I’ll send some meds for upset stomach. You’ll need that after eating her food.” Shivam mocked.
“Uncle aap bhai ki baat mat suno. I make good food!” Taani glared at Shivam.
Rey shook his head at Taani calling Rannvijay uncle.
“Rey, Armaan wapas aaraha hai?” Juhi asked him.
“Unki flight hai abhi. Voh bas bye bolne aaye the.” Rey informed.
“Aur tumhe neeche utaarne.” Taani giggled.
“Toh chalo hum dinner kar lete hai. Aur uske baad Taani kuch dessert bana degi hum sab ke liye.” Rannvijay wiggled his brows at her.
Taani stood rooted at her place as they all moved to the dining area.
“Taani chalo, I was joking.” Rannvijay called her.
“Haan aayi!” She helped Rey sit at the table and sat beside him.
“Kitni baar kaha hai ke khana khate time phone mat use kiya kar?” Tanya scolded Taani.
“Haan bas hogaya!” Taani quickly pressed a few buttons and kept it aside.
An order confirmation notification popped up on her screen.
“Not bad!” Rey said looking at it.
“Rey..” Shivam called him.
“Haan?” Rey looked at him.
“Maine suna hai ki tum bohot hi accha dance karte ho but maine kabhi dekha nahi tumhe dance karte.” Shivam said.
“Theek hai phir dinner ke baad batata hoon.” Rey replied.
“Koi jarurat nahi hai.” Taani opposed.
“I didn’t mean now.” Shivam defended.
“You are doubting my dancing skills. I need to prove myself right away!” Rey said.
“No you don’t!” Taani glared at him.
“Arre Taani kyun mana kar rahi ho, karne do usse dance.” Rannvijay said.
“Par Pa..”
“Ligament tear hojayega aur yeh iska last dance hoga. Fir jaake iski akal thikane aayegi!” He sneered at Rey.
“Sahi kaha aapne!” Taani took his side.
“Tum dono milke mere bete ko kyun pareshan kar rahe ho?” Juhi ran her hand over his head.
“Hogaya mera khake. Main upar ja raha hoon.” Rey pushed his chair back to get up.
“Rey, khana khatam karo.” Tanya instructed him.
“Maa bhook nahi hai!” Rey threw tantrums at Juhi. Juhi pointed at Tanya.
“Khana khatam karo aur phir upar jao.” Tanya repeated. He quietly obeyed.
After dinner, Taani and Shivam helped Juhi with the dishes while Rannvijay helped Rey up to his room.
“Rey kahan gaya?” Taani asked as she came out.
“Upar.” Tanya pointed to his room.
Just then the doorbell rang and Taani went to receive it.
“Yeh kya hai?” Rannvijay asked Taani as she walked in with a box.
“A small treat for now.” She said sheepishly opening the cake box.
“Rann kya jarurat thi dessert mention karne ki?” Juhi scolded him.
“Arre aunty, it’s my treat. Aap Paa pe mat chillao.” Taani served everyone cake and took some upstairs for Rey.
“Tu toh chup hi reh. Meri tooti huyi taang bhi kaafi hai tere liye!” Rey sneered on the video call.
Taani entered quietly and saw Sara, Sharon and Riri on the television screen in front of Rey. No one had noticed her yet.
“Don’t you guys tempt him. Let him rest!” Riri scolded.
“Bhabhs aap kiski side pe ho?” Sharon complained.
“What the hell is bhabhs?” Rey made a disgusted face.
“Exactly! Bhai ko AB bulati ho so come up with something good for Riri as well.” Sara told Sharon.
“Ek to itna chota naam hai. Uska aur kya karu?” Sharon pouted.
“Rey ka toh kiya tha!” Sara started laughing.
“Sara chup reh! Wahan aake maarunga!” Rey yelled.
“Hey!” Riri spotted Taani and waved at her.
Rey turned to look at the door as Taani walked in. Sara and Sharon passed a knowing look and smirked.
“Hey Taani!” Sharon grinned.
Rey looked at the screen and he exactly knew what was coming so he quickly grabbed the television remote.
“Bye Siii..” Rey disconnected the call before Sara and Sharon could complete.
“What was that?” Taani walked up to Rey.
“Kuch nahi, bas bakwas!” Rey threw the remote to his side. “Wow! Cake!” He snatched the plate from her hand.
“What did Sharon call you?” Taani asked going over the other side of the bed to get in.
“Cake kyun order kiya tune?” Rey asked ignoring her question.
“Dessert treat.” She slid next to him.
“Ice cream order karti!” He said eating a mouthful.
“Next time pakka.” She giggled seeing him.
“Next time kyun? Abhi kar. Ice cream ke liye humesha jagah hoti hai.” He said rubbing his stomach.
“Kar du?” She picked up her phone.
“Yes!” He nodded.
“Mere phone se ya tumhare phone se?” She asked.
“Treat teri hai na!” He reminded her.
“So you don’t mind me paying?” She squinted.
“Obviously not!”
“Really?” She scrunched her nose and he started laughing, confusing her.
“I have been wanting to talk to you about this.” He controlled his laugh. “I know you’re mad at me for pulling the bill out of your hand while on our dinner date. But, in my defense you didn’t have a job back then and you know how I feel about it. Tujhe clearly uss waqt gussa aaya tha, but that was the last time I could’ve done that. Uske baad tera job chalu ho raha tha aur phir kabhi tujhe waise annoy karne nahi milta.” He explained.
“So you knew I was angry about it?” She glared.
“If I hadn’t done that you wouldn’t be half as happy as you were when paying the bill the next time.” He defended his actions making her smile.
“Meri har cheez notice kaise kar lete ho?” She placed the empty plates on the side table and laid on his lap.
“Abh tu itne clear indications degi toh kaise notice nahi karu?” He scoffed.
“Kya matlab?” She squinted at him.
“Why aren’t you wearing your ring? Itni mehnat karke I had gotten it for you!” He pouted.
“Kal uspe fevi-quick girte girte bacha hai. I don’t want to spoil it.” She told him. “Isiliye I’m not wearing it. I think I won’t for a few more days.”
“I shouldn’t have given it back to you. Mere paas safe rehti.” He pointed to his dog tag.
“Oh shut up! You are not getting it back!” She sneered. He rolled his eyes and mocked her.
After a while, he saw her playing with her hair thinking of something.
“Kya hua?” He asked.
“Huh?” She looked at him.
“What are you thinking?”
“Uss din Ayushman ke saath ghar jaate time..”
“Tu uske saath kyu ja rahi thi?” He interrupted her.
“Office mein late hogaya tha and uber prices were sky high. Plus he offered, toh free ride kyun mana karu main?” She giggled.
“Makes sense.” He joined.
“Anyways, he asked me a question then which got me thinking.” She joined her hands and placed them on her stomach. “I don’t have any hobby as such.”
“What rubbish!”
“No really. I don’t!”
“You like sketching.” He pointed out.
“But that is related to my field.”
“Tu kya har time designs banati rehti hai?”
“Nahi but, that doesn’t count as a hobby.”
“Why?”
“Because hobby should be different from my profession na?”
“Kisne bola? Uss gadhe ne bola hai toh uski baat mat sunn. Usse ghanta kuch pata hai!”
“He didn’t say anything. Main bas iss topic ke baare mein soch rahi hoon. Abhi tumhara example lo, you work as an architect, but you love to dance. Both activities are different from each other.”
“Soon I’ll be quitting my job and then It’ll be only dance.” He reminded her.
“Okay bad example!” She sighed. “Wait cooking!” She remembered. “Cooking can be considered as your hobby.”
“You are venturing into that now.” He gave her a lopsided smile.
“Haan.” She thought. “Paa ko mere haath ka bana kuch khana hai. I have no idea unhe kya pasand hai. Kya banau main?” She looked at him worried.
“He will eat anything and everything that you serve him. So tu tension mat le.” He ran his hand in her hair and unconsciously started playing with it.
…
“Kaafi late hogaya hai. We should leave.” Tanya said looking at the time.
“I’ll call Taani down.” Shivam got up.
“Ruko main laati hoon usse. Rey se bhi mil lungi nikalne se pehle.” Tanya stopped him.
“Chalo I’ll take you up.” Juhi led Tanya to Rey’s room.
Juhi lightly knocked on the door and opened it. She stood there quietly admiring the sight. Tanya furrowed her brows at Juhi and then looked inside. They saw Rey sitting, leaning against the headrest. Taani laid beside him with her head on his lap. They were holding each other’s hand and were in deep sleep.
“Door open hua phir bhi yeh utha nahi. I’m surprised.” Juhi mumbled looking at Rey.
“I don’t feel like disturbing them. Taani ko aaj yahin rukne do.” Tanya walked back admiring the smile on Rey and Taani’s face.
“Haan.” Juhi slowly closed the door behind her, switching off the lights.
“Taani kahan hai?” Shivam asked when they came downstairs.
“So rahi hai.” Tanya informed.
“She’s not coming with us?” He asked her.
“We didn’t wake them up. Rehne do usse yahan.”
“Okay, if you say so.” Shivam agreed and they left.
“Shivam didn’t look happy about the fact that Taani is staying back.” Rannvijay pointed out to Juhi.
“Voh Rey ka tension hai. Ussi ke liye chod dete hai.” She laughed.
“Sachi mein sogaye dono ya excuse tha yeh?” He chuckled.
“Maine door knock karke open kiya phir bhi utha nahi voh. I’m relieved that Tanya didn’t mind Taani staying over. Mera dil usse utha nahi pata.” Juhi leaned on Rannvijay’s shoulder.
“He has found his solace.” Rannvijay smiled engulfing her in his embrace.
Rey slowly unwound the aerial silk cloth from his hand to descend down. He felt his grip loosen and was about to fall down when he jerked his eyes open. He squinted his eyes adjusting to the dim lights in the room. He looked at the wall clock and saw that it was two-thirty in the night. He felt a stir next to him and saw Taani. He smiled looking down at her. He adjusted her head on the pillow next to him and slowly slid down pulling the covers over them. He threw his arm around her waist and slept spooning her.
Rey woke up the next morning to the sound of the alarm clock next to him. He shut it off and rubbed his eyes to get rid of the morning blues. He looked at his side and saw Taani peacefully sleeping on her back. He turned on his sides and supported his head by his hand. With his other hand he started playing with her hair. She stirred due to the disturbance and turned to face him. She threw her arm and leg over him forcing him to lie back down and slept hugging him. He adjusted his hand to support her head with his shoulder and closed his eyes.
“Morning!” Ayushman greeted entering the meeting room.
“Good morning.” Swayam replied back.
“Aaj tum? Are all of you following this project?” Ayushman asked him.
“I’m the one who’s handling it. Uss din bhai ko dekhna tha ki kaise ho raha hai kaam so he was present. Aage se main hi rahunga.” Swayam told him.
“Tere pehle toh Sharon thi na?” Ayushman questioned.
“She is already working on some other project. Uske paas time nahi tha.” Swayam informed.
“I feel like she is avoiding me.”
“She doesn’t like your presence here but avoid nahi kar rahi voh tujhe.” Swayam chuckled.
“Mujhe uss se baat karni thi yaar.”
“Toh kar na. I’m sure she won’t mind that.”
“Yeah!” Ayushman sighed. “Waise baaki sab kahan hai?”
“Aate honge sab.” Swayam told him. “Main coffee leke aata hoon. Teko kuch chahiye?” He asked.
“No, I’m good. Thanks.”
“Morning!” Kiya entered and made arrangements for the meeting.
“Morning!” Rey greeted Taani as she opened her eyes.
“Morning!” She smiled and shut her eyes close hugging him.
“Slept well?” He asked.
“Hmm.” She nodded sleepily and adjusted herself to a better position.
“Ouch.” Rey winced as he felt her kick his leg.
“Sorry.” She instantly opened her eyes as she realized it.
“It’s okay.” He smiled wiping the worry off her face.
“I should get going. Warna office ke liye late hojaungi.” She sat on the bed rubbing her eyes.
“Aaj office hai tera?” He squinted.
“Haan, obviously! Aaj ek aur meeting hai SRS mein.” She stretched her arms over her head.
“I think you need to hurry up a little.” He pointed at the clock.
“F*ck!” Her eyes popped out looking at the time. “My meeting starts in fifteen minutes!” She got off the bed.
“Office yahan se jyada door nahi hai. Directly ja sakti hai tu.”
“Aise?” She looked down at her disheveled self. “I came directly from work yesterday. I can’t wear the same clothes!”
“Yeah wearing the same clothes as yesterday is the problem right now!” He sneered.
“It’s all crumbled up! I can’t go like this and I can’t even go back home and change.” She covered her face. “I’ll just call in sick!” She started looked for her phone.
“As much as I love the idea, uski jarurat nahi hai. You’ll find something to wear in the guest room wardrobe.” Rey told her.
“Why do you have spare clothes in..” She furrowed her brows.
“Questions later woman! Time is running!” He interrupted her.
“Right!” She sprinted to the next room to get changed.
Rey shook his head at her and looked side to side to search for her phone. He picked his up and dialed her number, but it was switched off. Sighing, he got up slowly and walked around to look for it. He limped around the room because of the bandage on his leg. Taani entered in raking her hair with her fingers and saw him grab on to a chair for balance.
“What are you doing?” She rushed to him.
“I’m looking for your phone.” He let go of the chair and instantly lost his balance.
“Rey yaar!” Taani held him and supported him by throwing his arm over her shoulder.
“Mera tension mat le. Teko late ho raha hai.”
“Yeah I’m leaving. But you get on your bed first. And please don’t start walking around if there is no one with you.” She helped him to the bed.
“I’m fine now. Did you eat anything?” He asked.
“I don’t have time.” She ran to her purse and rummaged it for her phone. “Mil gaya!” She pulled it out. “It’s dead!”
“Put it on charge in the car.”
“I don’t have a car charger.”
“You seriously need a new car!”
“Later Rey!”
“Wait, take my car instead. Phone thoda toh charge hojayega.”
“Keys?”
“I guess they are..” He got up.
“Rey for God’s sake please just stay put. And I honestly have no time to look for the keys. Office jaake charge kar lungi phone.” She picked up her purse and turned to leave.
“Listen, don’t rush. Tu already late hai. Gaadi bhagane se meeting ke pehle tu pahuch nahi sakti. So please.”
“Is it not better to just call in sick?” She paused and asked.
“Did you just have a meeting today ya uske baad kuch kaam bhi hai?” He asked.
“Bohot kaam hai.” She answered.
“Toh thodi daant kha lena but don’t compromise on your work.” He advised.
“Bye. Please take care of yourself.” Taani left.
“Where is Taani?” Ayushman whispered to Gauri.
“I tried calling her but uska phone dead hai.” Gauri whispered back.
“What is your opinion on it Ayushman?” Mansi asked.
“Well, I don’t hate the suggestion, but I don’t like it either. Instead of working from here on the entire project we can arrange for a schedule where I come down here twice a week. I mean we just need to be aware of the progress, uske liye roz yahan se kaam karne ki need nahi lagti mujhe.” He stated.
“Makes sense.” Mansi agreed and continued with the meeting.
Ayushman checked his phone for an email or a text from Taani and was disappointed on seeing none. The meeting continued and they cemented their working plan for the project.
“I guess we are done.” Purvi announced. Mansi nodded at her and got up.
“Okay, let’s get to work.” Ayushman got up behind her.
“Good luck! I’ll take your leave.” Swayam excused himself.
“Purvi, if Taani comes you two can start your work today itself.” Mansi informed her and left.
“If Taani comes!” Ayushman mumbled flaring his nostrils. “Gauri, I want to know why wasn’t Taani present for this meeting!” He left the meeting room in rage.
“Gadhi ka phone kyun band aa raha hai?” Purvi wondered dialing her number.
“Meeting khatam hogayi?” Taani came running into the meeting room.
“Where were you? Couldn’t you inform that you won’t be present for the meeting?” Gauri charged at her.
“I’m sorry.” Taani panted.
Gauri’s phone rang and she picked it up giving Taani time to catch her breath. Purvi walked to her and raised her brows asking her about her whereabouts. Taani signaled her that she’ll tell her later on.
“Haan Ayush, file yahin hai. I’ll keep it with me.” Gauri said into the phone.
“Taani se koi contact hua?” He asked.
“She is here in front of me.” She informed.
“Give her the phone!” Ayushman demanded.
“Hello Ayushman, I’m really sorr..” Taani immediately spoke into the phone.
“I’m not interested in your sorry. Why are you late? If you had some personal reason, why couldn’t you inform us before hand? This isn’t our office. Thoda toh mere reputation ka khayal rakhti. Did you know how bad your absence made me look in front of everyone in the meeting?” He blasted at her.
“I am really sorry. I was running a little late but couldn’t inform as my phone died in the morning.” She told him.
“That’s your excuse? You slept in? College nahi hai yeh!” He raised his voice.
“I’m sor..” Taani tried to apologize.
“Don’t!” He stopped her and took a deep breath to hold his anger back. “You know what, aaj galati se bhi mere saamne mat aana. Kal hum office mein baat karenge about this!” He disconnected the phone.
Taani handed Gauri her phone back and shut her eyes close so as to not tear up.
“Don’t worry.” Gauri placed her hand on Taani’s shoulder. “Start your work with Purvi. Don’t keep thinking about this.” She left.
“Kidhar thi tu? Aur itna late kyun hua?” Purvi asked as soon as Gauri was out of the door.
“I woke up at nine fifteen. I came here as fast as I could!” Taani sat on one of the chairs.
“Raat ko phone charge karna phir se bhool gayi tu?” Purvi sat down beside her.
“Bag mein pada tha aur mera dhyaan nahi tha.”
“Aaj subah ghar gayi toh aunty ne bataya that you stayed back at Rey’s place last night. Mujhe laga uske yahan se tu jaldi aajayegi but you were fast asleep! Waise, raat ko kar kya rahe the tum dono ki neend nahi khuli?” Purvi teased.
“Mujhe yahan mere job ki tension hai aur tujhe yeh sab mazak sujh raha hai?” Taani glared at her.
“Okay sorry we’ll talk about this later. Abhi let’s start working.” Purvi giggled.
“Pehle charger de yaar!” Taani slammed her phone on the table.
“I’ll get it. Tab tak tu yeh notes padh le, meeting ki summary hai.” Purvi handed her the laptop and left.
…
“Come in.” Swayam said on hearing the knock on his cabin door.
“Rey?” Ayushman looked around opening the door.
“Voh nahi aaraha. Kuch kaam tha?” Swayam asked.
“Nothing important. I’ll call him later.” Ayushman smiled at him.
“Waise tu thodi der pehle kispe itna bhadka hua tha?” Swayam asked.
“Huh?” Ayushman furrowed his brows.
“I heard you yelling on the phone.” Swayam explained.
“Taani!” Ayushman walked in and sat across Swayam. “Meeting miss karne ka excuse deti hai ki voh so rahi thi! Matlab kya college hai yeh? Late utho toh first lecture bunk karo?” He shook his head in disbelief.
“Yahan toh barabar time pe aati thi.” Swayam pointed out.
“This is the first time she is late.” Ayushman said.
“There must be some reason yaar. And considering ki first time late hua hai usse, you could have been a little considerate.”
“Yeah.” Ayushman agreed with Swayam. “But voh kal se. Itni jaldi gussa thanda hogaya yeh pata chala toh future mein mujhe bohot hi leniently legi voh!” He added with a chuckle.
“Tu gussa tha kis baat pe?” Swayam questioned.
“Pehle toh main concerned tha ki aayi kyun nahi. Phir Mansi ne mera para chadha diya. Why does she like giving so many taunts?”
“Manas loves to show people their places.” Swayam chuckled. “Uska taunt I’m pretty sure teri taraf hoga implying that you are too lenient. Hume roz yahan padte rehte hai uske taane.”
“Please mere bhai usko bol ki thode kam taane maare. Aadat nahi hai mujhe.”
“Hojayegi.” Swayam laughed.
“Whatever! I’ll get going. Milna hai madam se aur ek minute bhi late hua toh taunts sunne padenge!” Ayushman left leaving a laughing Swayam behind.
“Hello.” Swayam answered his phone.
“Where the hell are you?” Sharon asked from the other end.
“Office! Meeting thi.” He reminded her.
“Ugh Ayu! Aaj bhi office mein hai” She groaned.
“Next week se bas do din aayega voh office.” He informed her.
“Oh thank you!”
“Ussi ka idea tha. Maine kuch nahi kiya.”
“Accha hai uski akal thikane aagayi. Anyway, I’ll see you in sometime. Bye love you.”
“Love you.” He disconnected the call and left his cabin to stretch his legs.
Swayam saw Purvi and Taani in the canteen and walked to them.
“Isse kya hua hai?” Swayam pointed at Taani.
“Boss ki daant padi hai.” Purvi laughed.
“Oh I heard that. He sounded really mad.” Swayam said.
“Really?” Taani looked at him.
“Haan main abhi just milke aaya. I asked him about your absence in the meeting, he got pretty mad.” Swayam said trying to pull her leg.
“Sab Rey ki galati hai!” Taani flared her nostrils.
“Matlab?” Swayam asked furrowing his brows as an idea cooked up in his head.
“Main thodi aur jaldi aajati. But Rey ko nikalne se pehle room mein ghoomne ka shauk chada and then he was about to fall. So I had to help him out first. Phir main nikli. And then there was this stupid jam at the signal as a car had banged into the other. Thodi jaldi nikal jaati toh I could have avoided that.” Taani shook her head.
“That explains this.” Swayam mumbled looking at her.
“Sorry?” Taani looked at him.
“If you were staying over at Rey’s usne tujhe uthaya kyun nahi?” Swayam asked.
“Voh bhi so raha tha.” Taani informed.
“Roz seven o’clock uska alarm bajta hai. He had definitely gotten up!”
“You mean to say usne mujhe jaan bujh kar nahi uthaya?” Taani squinted.
“Makes sense to me! Ghar pe baithe baithe voh bore horaha hai. Kuch masala chahiye life mein usse. Toh usne socha teko aaj late karega office ke liye.” Swayam explained.
“Abhi usse phone karke batati hoon main!” Taani flared her nostrils.
“Tu phone pe usse jhadegi aur voh chup chaap teri baat sunega, nahi?” Swayam cocked his brow at her.
“Right, voh phone baju mein rakh dega. Aaj shaam ko main uski khabar leti hoon!” Taani said with determination.
“Good luck!” Swayam got up patting her back.
“What was that?” Purvi asked Taani after he left.
“Rey ki aaj khair nahi!” Taani smiled evilly.
“Plan worked! Abhi sabko inform karta hoon to meet at Rey’s in the evening.” Swayam did an evil laugh in his head and texted the gang.
…
“Mere se toh iss baare mein baat nahi ki hai usne kuch. Dekhta hoon main.” Rey said into the phone.
“Thanks a lot man!” Ayushman sighed in relief.
“Anytime dude! And please you don’t lose your cool.” Rey told him.
“I won’t.” Ayushman answered. “Chal rakhta hoon main.”
“Yeah sure. Bye.” Rey disconnected the call.
“Kya poora time phone pe lage rehte ho tum?” Juhi entered his room.
“Theek hai phone rakh ka bahar jaata hoon. Jaane dogi aap?” He cocked his eyebrow.
“Very funny. Abhi chalo lunch kar lo.” She handed him the plate.
“Maa bhook nahi hai.” He groaned.
“Rey yeh kya bachpana hai? Medicine leni hai tujhe, you’ll have to eat something before that.” She sat next to him.
“Maa bhindi nahi.” He sulked looking at the food.
Juhi took the plate in her hand and made a morsel for him. “Chalo open your mouth!” She fed him.
Rey ate making faces at her. After feeding him, she made him take his medicines and put him to sleep.
“Bachchon ke bhi itne nakhre nahi hote jinte tere hote hai.” Juhi shook her head at him and left closing the door behind her.
“Neend toh itni jaldi aane se rahi. Taani ko call kar leta hoon.” Rey picked up his phone.
“Urgent. Call!” He read Sharon’s message and called her instead.
“Kya hai Rey?” Sharon answered.
“Tune message kiya tha.” He furrowed his brows.
“Time dekh. Ek ghante pehle kiya tha. Abhi hogaya kaam. Bye!” She disconnected.
“Huh? Whatever!” Rey rolled his eyes looking at his locked screen.
“Rey!” Juhi came back into his room. “Phone do!” She demanded.
“Maa you can’t be serious?” He gawked at her.
“I’m dead serious! Tujhe bachchon wali treatment chahiye toh wahi milegi! Now give me that phone and go to sleep!” She snatched the phone from his hand.
“Ugh!” He pulled the comforter over his head and tried to sleep.
…
“I need coffee!” Purvi groaned as she settled in a chair in the canteen.
“I’ll get it.” Taani giggled seeing her tired face.
Taani walked to the coffee machine and waited as it poured coffee into the cup. She yawned closing her eyes giving into the tiredness she felt. She was working along with Purvi since morning without any break. She stifled another yawn which threatened to come out. She picked up the two cups of coffee and stiffened as she felt someone’s presence right behind her.
“What’s your suggested retail price?” He whispered huskily in her ears.
Her eyes widened as she recognized the voice and gulped hard turning around to confirm it. She came face to face with Ayushman, who jerked back seeing her. She scurried off from there trying to block off what she just heard.
“F*ck!” He cursed and looked at the canteen door to find Sharon staring at him.
Sharon gave him a look of disgust and walked off. He ran behind her.
“Shar wait.” He stopped her.
“Not interested!” She paused to look at him and continued walking.
“I thought it was you.” He yelled making her stop.
Sharon looked around and saw people staring at them. She pulled him to a corner and confronted him.
“What?” She raised her brows at him.
“I thought that it was you in the canteen.” He said again. “And I thought I’d joke around like old times which would get you to not run away from me!”
“Firstly, I’m not running away from you. And secondly, why did you think that it was me and what the hell did you say to her?” Sharon squinted.
“She was wearing your clothes.” He pointed out.
“Voh kapde poore duniya mein bas mere paas hai, right?” She mocked.
“Yeah!”
“What?”
“That top resembles a lot to the one I gifted you. And it was custom.” He told her.
“You had gotten it made for my birthday.” Sharon mumbled thinking about it.
“Exactly!” He agreed. “Mujhe laga ki tu thi isiliye voh kaha maine.” He looked away.
“What exactly did you say?” She squinted.
“I made the SRP joke.” He avoided looking at her.
“You bloody moron!” Sharon widened her eyes at him. “You asked her what her suggested retail price was? F*cking idiot!” She cursed. “No wonder she was shaken!”
“Pata nahi kya soch rahi hogi voh mere baare mein.” He held his head.
“Uski jagah main hoti toh teko do thappad laga chuki hoti!” Sharon flared her nostrils.
“Kise thappad padne wale hai?” Swayam approached them.
“Iss gadhe Ayu ko!” Sharon pointed at Ayushman.
“Haan dekha maine Manas full bhadki huyi hai ki yeh kuch kaam nahi kar raha bas ghoom raha hai office mein.” Swayam chuckled.
“I swear agar tune aag lagayi hogi na chodunga nahi tujhe main.” Ayushman warned him. “Shar?” He looked at her for her support.
“Don’t worry Ayu, isko dekh lungi main.” Sharon smirked.
“What the hell? Tu hai kiski side pe?” Swayam looked at her in disbelief.
Sharon looked at both of them and left abruptly.
“Hello? So gayi?” Purvi waved her hand in front of Taani to gain her attention. “Taani?” She shook her.
“Haan?” Taani was startled.
“Kahan khoyi hai?” Purvi asked.
“Kuch nahi.” Taani answered.
“Don’t tell me ki tu abhi tak tere boss ke baare mein soch rahi hai.”
“What no!” Taani denied immediately.
“Toh fiancé?” Purvi asked slyly.
“Haan.” Taani answered absent mindedly.
“How is he doing now?” Purvi asked.
“Who?” Taani asked back.
“Rey! What is wrong with you?” Purvi was concerned now.
“Abhi main coffee lene gayi thi toh I bumped into Ayushman.”
“And? Was he still mad?” Purvi asked.
“He..” Taani paused looking for words to explain. “He said something really inappropriate.”
“What did he say?” Purvi asked cautiously.
“He catcalled me!”
“Tu kabse yahan aake chup chap baithi hai. Kuch bola kyun nahi?” Purvi was shocked.
“I’m still trying to process that. I was going to go and apologize after lunch par abhi..”
“Forget apologizing! Usko jaake bol that you work in his company. He needs to learn manners to talk to his employees!” Purvi raged.
“He didn’t seem like a person who would do such things. He basically asked me what my price is?” Taani widened her eyes.
“Disgusting!”
“I’m not reading into it na?” Taani asked after a while of thinking. “He may have been standing behind me in the line for coffee. And I was panicked so I might have not heard him properly.” She wondered.
“What exactly did he say?” Purvi questioned.
“I don’t remember clearly. But I definitely heard the words your and price.” Taani informed.
“Both together?”
“Nahi. Beech mein kuch aur bhi tha. Shayad.” Taani answered unsure.
“I understand you want to give him the benefit of the doubt. But make sure he knows not to intrude your personal space.” Purvi placed her hand on hers.
“There you are.” Gauri walked to Taani. “I was looking for you.”
“What happened?” Taani asked her.
“Ayush wants to meet us. He has called us in the meeting room.” Gauri informed her.
“Okay.” Taani got up looking at Purvi.
“Tum jao. Main aa hi rahi hoon thodi der mein.” Purvi told her.
Taani and Gauri walked inside the meeting room to find Ayushman engrossed in files. He looked up at them and asked them to settle in.
“Floor plans revise karne ke baad review kisne kiye the?” He asked them.
“Maine kiye the review.” Gauri answered.
“All of them?” He asked again.
“Yeah.”
“Then what is the old plan doing in this file?” He slid the file across the table.
“Yeh..” Gauri furrowed her brows.
“Iska updated plan available nahi tha.” Taani reminded her.
“Right. Isiliye old wala hi rakha isme.” Gauri told Ayushman.
“And why wasn’t I informed about it?” Ayushman flared his nostrils at them. “Gauri you know how beneficial this project will be for us. Mansi Roy won't give a second thought before calling off this partnership. Still such carelessness?”
“Sorry. We’ll be careful from now.” Gauri apologized.
“Taani, what is your status on work with Purvi?” He asked.
“We’ll be done soon.” Taani answered.
“I want it done by the end of the day!” He demanded.
Taani nodded looking down. Ayushman noticed that she was feeling uncomfortable because of what happened earlier in the canteen. He wanted to clear it out but avoided due to Gauri’s presence. He asked them to carry on and thought of a way to approach her without making her feel threatened by him.
…
Taani sat in her balcony deeply engrossed in her thoughts with a coffee mug in her hand. She could hear her phone vibrating every few minutes, but she cared less to look at it. The events from the evening were paying in her mind. She was waiting for Purvi in the parking lot by her car. She was engrossed in her phone. Rey was texting her continuously as she wasn’t picking up his calls. She wanted to rush home, drop Purvi off and then go to see Rey to confront him about the morning incident. She felt a tap on her shoulder which startled her. Her phone slipped out of her hand and landed by her feet. She picked it up and as she straightened herself, her head banged into the side mirror of her car. She hissed in pain pressing at the spot. At the same time, she felt another pair of hands on top of hers.
“Careful!” Ayushman spoke.
Taani quickly straightened herself and backed up creating space between them.
“Jyada zor se toh nahi lagi na? He inquired.
“I’m fine.” She replied curtly.
“Apply pressure there. You’ll feel better.” He raised his hand to her head and she took another step back.
“I’m good. I was leaving. Mujhe late ho raha hai.” She got into her car and drove off.
Taani was brought out of her thoughts by the sound of the doorbell. She knew who it was.
“Taani kahan hai?” Purvi asked Shivam entering the house.
“Rey se milne jaane wali thi voh.” He informed. “Kya hua?” He asked her on seeing her annoyed.
“We were supposed to come home together but she left without informing me!” Purvi scoffed.
“I’m sorry Purvi. I panicked seeing him there.” Taani mumbled to herself.
She looked at her phone and it was flashing Rey’s name. She turned it upside down not wanting to talk to him at that time. She heard Purvi telling Shivam that she was leaving and sighed in relief.
…
“Aww! Rey ka face itna utra hua kyun hai?” Aashi teased him.
“Shut the f*ck up!” He frowned.
“Kitni baar call karega?” Swayam shook his head.
“Jab tak voh uthati nahi.” Rey said calling her again.
“By the way, why the hell was she wearing my clothes today?” Sharon asked Rey.
“Your clothes?” Rey squinted. “Oh haan. Maine uss se kaha tha cupboard se kuch lene ko. Tere kapde idhar pade hai usme meri kya galati.” He answered.
“Par..”
“Not now Sharon!” He stopped her.
“Mujhe nahi lagta voh aaj aane wali hai. Aur abhi aunty yahan aane se pehle we should leave.” Nil said.
“I swear. Hum jab aaye tabhi she was shouting at us ki subah se hum sab kahan gayab the. Abhi aur nahi daant sunni.” Simmi added.
“Bye Rey!”
“Jao yaar jaldi. Shaanti se call bhi karne nahi dete.” Rey called Taani again.
“Tu laga reh!” Swayam shook his head at Rey and left followed by everyone. “Itni determination ke saath gaali de rahi thi Rey ko. Aayi kyun nahi?” He wondered.
“Kaun?” Sharon heard him. He told her how he had filled Taani’s ears so as to witness a showdown making her laugh out loud.
“Taani yaar!” Rey sighed looking at his phone.
The screen went on and he saw a text message from Taani. He immediately opened it and read. She told him that Ambar had come to see her, and she was busy with her. Getting mad at the single line of text he called up Ambar.
“Hey jeeju!” Ambar answered the call immediately.
“Hi. Taani ko phone do!” Rey demanded.
“Aap ussi ko call karo na. Mujhe uske ghar jaane time lag jayega.” She chuckled.
“You’re not with her?” Rey furrowed his brows.
“Nope. Main ghar pe hoon. Kya hua?” She asked.
“Nothing. I’ll call her.” He told her and disconnected.
Rey called Taani again and this time she picked it up on the second ring getting annoyed at the constant calls.
“Kya hai?” She asked flaring her nostrils.
“Kabse call kar raha hoon main. Tu aaj aayi kyun nahi? Aur jhoot kyun bola?” He blasted as soon as he got connected.
“Aur tumne jo jhoot bola uska kya?” She raised her voice.
“Maine kya..”
“Oh shut up! Don’t act innocent in front of me. Subah jaan bujh kar mujhe office ke liye late kiya. I had to hear all that unnecessary shouting because of you. And also tolerate his behavior!” She flared at him.
“What?” Rey was confused.
“I’m mad at you! So don’t call me again!” Taani disconnected the call and went to sleep.
“Taani, please start working on the designs and let me know if you have any questions about it. I’ll be leaving early today.” Gauri informed as soon as Taani entered the office.
“Sure.” Taani quickly got to work.
Taani sat back from her computer for a minute and she saw Ayushman going from one room to the other. She felt a sense of relief that they weren’t in the same room for long periods of time. She got back to her work when she saw him come back into the room. Her mind kept playing the incidents of the previous day not allowing her to focus on her work. She decided to go for a short walk around the office to clear her mind. She bumped into Adah in the corridor.
“Hey!” Adah greeted her.
“Hi!” Taani smiled at her.
“Tu toh first day se hi full busy hogayi yaar.” Adah laughed.
“Haan project hi aisa hai.” Taani sighed.
“But you are missing out on the fun in the office. I love the working environment here!” Adah grinned.
“Working environment?” Taani thought about the previous day.
“Kya hua?” Adah clicked her fingers in front of Taani.
“I so wish we could exchange places.” Taani smiled lightly.
“There is no way I’m trading places. I don’t want to slug in my early days of working.” Adah raised her hand.
“Sounds like you are really having fun!”
“And you sound like you want to run for the hills.” Adah laughed.
“Something like that!” Taani joined her.
“Well then I won’t take much of your time. You have a long way ahead.” Adah giggled and left biding bye to Taani.
Taani returned back to her desk feeling better than before. She started working on the project again.
“Taani did you check ki updated plan kab tak milne wala hai?” Ayushman walked to her.
“I haven’t heard back from them.” She informed him.
“Okay. Continue with what you are doing.” He turned to leave and stopped. “Do you have a minute to talk?” He turned back to her.
“Yeah?” She replied unsure looking around. She noticed that Gauri wasn’t in the room.
“I wanted to apologize if I’ve made you uncomfortable in any way.” He looked at her and felt her body stiffen under his gaze. He stepped back to give her some space to breathe.
“Apology accepted.” She forced a curt smile at him.
“Say it like you mean it!” He shook his head at her. “Yesterday, I saw you there and thought you were Sharon because of your clothes. Anyway, I didn’t mean to creep you out.” He explained her.
“As in?” She furrowed her brows.
“Sharon had a top similar to what you wore yesterday, and I assumed that it was her at the coffee machine and not you.”
“And you asked for her price?” She questioned softly.
“Oh God no!” He held his head in embarrassment. “This explains why you’ve been behaving in this way. That’s supposed to be a joke.”
“I don’t get it.”
“Back when Shar and I were dating, she used to call me by different names. So I had come up with this very offensive slang with her initials, SRP. Suggested retail price.” He explained her.
“She knows about it?”
“Yeah! It was our silly thing.” He shook his head. “Sorry for getting you in the middle of it.”
“It makes sense now. Main kuch jyada hi dimaag chala rahi thi.” Taani mumbled to herself.
“I can understand what impression that might have created of me. But trust me I’m not like that in any way. And I’m really sorry.”
“It’s alright. I’m glad that the misunderstanding was resolved.” Taani smiled at him.
“Well, get back to work then. Don’t slack!” He smiled back.
“Umm Ayushman..” Taani stopped him as he turned to leave.
“Yes?” He turned back to her.
“I wasn’t purposely late yesterday. And I promise to not repeat that mistake again.” She apologized.
“It’s fine. Main thoda jyada hi bhadak gaya tha.” He brushed it off and left.
…
Taani rang the bell and waited for the door to open. She hadn’t talked to Rey since the last night after she had lashed out on him. He had neither called nor texted since the morning and she felt uneasy because of it. She knew he wanted to give her time to unwind herself, but she was missing his constant pestering. Sharon opened the door and called her in.
“Shar!” Rey shouted her name and she ran in followed by Taani.
“Yeah I’m here!” Sharon stood at the bottom of the stairs.
“Okay here I come!” Rey rested his butt on the railing and slid himself down the stairs.
“What the f*ck are you two doing?” Taani widened her eyes at them.
“Ghar pe koi hai nahi and I couldn’t carry his a*s down the stairs.” Sharon explained helping him from the stairs to the couch.
“Aur main room mein baithe baithe bore hogaya tha. I needed a change of location.” Rey added.
“But you could’ve hurt yourself even more. Sharon tum toh roak sakti thi usse.” Taani looked at them.
“It’s not the first time he’s slid down the railing.” Sharon brushed it off.
“I’m a pro at it!” Rey gloated sitting on the couch.
Taani folded her arms across her chest and glared at him.
“I’ll get going.” Sharon said looking at Taani.
“Sharon, we aren’t done talking yet.” Rey reminded her.
“I’m done. Bye Taani.” Sharon left.
“Bye.” Taani waved at her and looked back at Rey.
Rey sat on the couch with his head lowered, engrossed in his thoughts. Taani looked at him intently but he didn’t look back at her. She closed her eyes and sighed.
“I’m sorry.” Taani sat next to him. “Kal ka din hi kharab tha.” She sulked.
“Bohot kaam tha kal?” He looked at her.
“Haan..”
“And I was annoying you with my calls?” He asked.
“Haan.”
“Jhoot moot ka toh na bolti.” He pouted making her chuckle.
“I shouldn’t have ignored your calls, but I was mentally exhausted. Aur mujhe pata tha tum mujhe ghar bulane ke liye call kar rahe the.”
“It’s just work. Itna stress mat de khud ko!” He threw his arm around her and pulled her closer.
“There was one other reason why I wasn’t answering your calls.” She chuckled.
“Kya?” He furrowed his brows at her.
“Does your alarm go off at seven in the morning?” She squinted.
“Yeah. Why?” He raised an eyebrow.
“Toh mujhe uthaya kyun nahi? Main jab office pahuchi tabhi meeting khatam hogayi thi!”
“Firstly, I didn’t know ki tujhe jaldi office jana tha and most importantly tujhe alarm ke baare mein kaise pata? You were fast asleep when it rang!” He questioned.
“Mujhe Swayam ne bataya.” She answered.
“Ohh usne tujhe bhadkaya. Main faltu ka Sharon ko blame kar raha tha.” Rey shook his head.
“Kya matlab?”
“Kal voh dono bohot ajeeb behave kar rahe the. And they were constantly asking about you. I figured that they were up to something and raat ko when you blasted on me main samajh gaya ki they added fuel to your fire.” He explained.
“I’m sorry. Subah se bohot ajeeb lag raha hai mujhe.” She hugged him tight.
“So you’ve cooled down now?” He asked kissing her forehead, still hugging her.
“Yeah!”
Taani involuntarily kissed his bare skin just below his neck. He felt goosebumps erupt as her lips touched him. His mouth completely dried up and he forgot his chain of thoughts. The only thing lingering in his mind was the feel of her lips. Taani looked up at him and saw him staring back at her. His pupils were dilated, and she could feel the intensity of his gaze on her. Her breathing increased as he closed in on her. She felt the same butterflies she felt when he was about to kiss her for the first time. He connected their lips weighing down on her making her lie on the couch. She kissed him back pulling him closer to her.
“I’m home!” They both jerked out of their trance on hearing Juhi’s voice.
They quickly sat back straight on the couch, calming their racing hearts.
“Tum neeche kaise aaye?” Juhi asked Rey as she walked into the living room.
“Voh.. Ahem..” He cleared his throat to get his voice out.
“Anyway, I just spoke to your doctor and he said that you can start walking around the house. But not up and down.” She informed.
“Maa bachcha nahi hoon main that you need to keep in touch with my doctor.” Rey wailed.
“Definitely bachcha nahi hai yeh.” Taani mumbled thinking about what just happened between them.
Rey widened his eyes at her making her giggle.
“Kya hua?” Juhi asked.
“Kuch nahi.” Taani shook her head. “You want anything? I can help you.” Taani offered.
“I’m good. You guys continue. I’ll be in my room.”
“Sure!” Taani told her as she left.
“So..?” Rey turned his head to Taani.
“So?” Taani narrowed her eyes.
“Should we continue?” He asked slyly.
“No!” She exclaimed making him laugh.
He switched the television on, and they surfed it cuddling together.
Hello!
I don't remember when I last tailored a chapter this much!
To everyone who commented/messaged me to update, you guys better comment! I have literally worked my ass off for this update!
A lot of you predicted that Rey will suffer an injury causing him to leave dance.
To all of those people, let him at least start his dance journey before you plan to write it off!
Question of the update:
What kind of balance, if any, do you find hard to achieve?
