CHAPTER 20 (PART A)

"No one can go back and change how it started but a new future for any marriage can begin the moment one person begins to invest in it."

-Fawn Weaver

"What the hell is this?" Kushi asked melancholically rolling her eyes from the jelabi mix, her husband had just prepared, to her husband's face. She accused him saying "I think you have added more water! It's too diluted! How will you make jelabi with this?" She pointed towards the mix making a grimaced face.

"I did what you said. You only asked me to add three glass of water and I did that. How on the earth I will be responsible if it becomes diluted?" Arnav argued in frustration. He can't believe that he is standing in the kitchen and making jelabi's for his wife at 3 in the midnight or should he say early morning, and still his wife is not satisfied with him.
"Well, I didn't say it on my own. It is given in this book." She waved the recipe book in front of him before thrusting it into his hands; she said "you itself read and do." Then moving little past him, she sat on the kitchen counter resuming her previous position. She had the carvings to eat sweet during her first trimester. Until she was in Mumbai, she had no problem in getting those sweets; all thanks to cooks who worked at her home.
But when she came to Delhi, she brought this book thinking that she, herself, will prepare those sweets. Unfortunately she had never opened this book until today. "I think I should add more flour to it." she heard her husband murmur and nodded to him. Picking the bowl containing pomegranate pearls, she plunged spoon into it.
Stuffing her mouth with pomegranate, she turned to her husband who showed her scoop of flour, asking her about the quantity. Gulping half munched pomegranate, she replied "add as much as you want." Arnav observed the way she was eating; his eyes getting fixed to her lips and he gulped hard as red colour juice started to descend down her already red lips while she wiped it with back of her hand.
Cursing himself for turning back, he added the flour to mix, trying to concentrate on jelabi than on his wife who has becoming more and more irresistible for him with every passing day. "Arnav?" he heard her call and in correct time he stopped himself from turning to her. "hmmm.." he said lighting the gas stove and placing the pan with oil on it.
"What took you seven years to take revenge on my family? What was your real intention? What do you wanted to do?" she questioned him in serious tone. "I thought few minutes before, I made it clear that we are not going to talk about it anymore, didn't i?" he questioned her back in firm voice. "I have every right to know it!" she argued.
"I agree. But right now you are not in the condition to know it!" he argued back. "You are spoiling your health, kushi." He added giving a squeeze to her hand. "I have already heard the worst part of it. I don't think it's going to affect me anymore. Even if it does, it will be still better than pondering over those things with so many questions on my mind. It's okay, if you don't want to talk about it. Talk to me when you feel like." she pouted making an innocent face.
Arnav sighed seeing her reaction. "Will you believe me Kushi, if I say I had no idea about what happened to Lavanya until she told me about it four years later?" Kushi's eyes widened in disbelief as soon as Arnav asked his question. "I thought enemies of pratiek uncle killed him and in process they had hurt Lavanya. Medical, media and police, all three reports said that. So I believed it."
He continued "nearly a week after the incident, a lady doctor took pity on us and told me that lavanya was gang ra*** and her higher authorities had barred them from telling the truth as a very big name was involved in it. I got scared as I understood that Lavanya is still breathing because she was suffering from amnesia. I had no doubt that once she got cured, those people, whoever it was, will come after her in fear that Lavanya might spill the beans."
Taking ladle in his hand, he started to blend the already blended mix, completely lost in past. "With help from my friends, I brought Lavanya here. Here I got shocking news that Lavanya had lost her child. Though I was sure that it must be arjun's, I still couldn't come up with what had happened. I didn't have enough time to investigate, actually I didn't had time even to think straight. "
He placed the bowl and ladle on the counter in frustration making loud noise. Kushi got down from the counter and was about to move towards him when he turned to her, his eyes packed with angry tears. "Pia was one month old and prem was two years old. Nani was suffering from asthma, Lavanya was in mental rehab and I didn't have any proper job. Wherever I go, it was all about money, fu****g money which I didn't have but needed it badly."
Kushi jerked back a little due to intensity in his voice. But his voice softened in minutes. "I was working in garments but it didn't help me in anyways. The worst part is everyone around me believed that I am strong and will come out of this situation very easily when I was not. I was weak and completely shattered with the happenings. I was scared; so scared that I even thought of committing suicide. How idiotic of me know, kushi? But it felt so right at that time."
Kushi held his hands giving him much needed support. Arnav was right; she shouldn't have asked about it now. It is becoming unbearable for her. But still she didn't want him to stop. With the way he was speaking, she was sure that she was the first one with whom he was sharing his pain. She knew that though he has come over that tough situation, last six years would have been really hard for him with so many things in his heart. She wanted him to let it out today.
Arnav clamped over kushi's hand which was over his and brought it up. "There was time when I slept wishing that I should not wake up next morning to witness the dawn. I started to believe death would be my only remedy. First i was angry on everyone for not understanding me. Though i had everyone i felt so lonely." he said holding their hands close to his heart. "Then I realised that these people might have not understood me but still they loved me. I accepted the situation and started to live for them."
"I started to do all jobs I got. Morning I worked as driving instructor in driving school, then in garments and in evening as a bar tender. Whenever I got time I used to design clothes. Three months later, I joined a fashion house as assistant designer. Year later, I did my first own fashion show. Then there was no looking back." He finished feeling very light.
Kushi noticed that throughout the story he didn't let single tear out even though his eyes were filled with tears. He might have been vulnerable before but his attitude showed that how strong and determined was he now. Of course confidence grows along with victory and she could see confidence sparkling in each cell of his body.
He started to speak again. "But as they say worst situation will bring best out of you, those sufferings made me what i am today. Just in six years, i did so many things that your father even couldn't think off. I build my own kingdom here, Kushi." He finished with his hands in air and so much pride in his voice. Even Kushi felt so proud of the way, how he made best out of worst situation.
"It may be small compared to your father's but still it is mine." He said looking at Kushi, his face glowing with happiness and pride. Squeezing his hand gently, Kushi nodded with a smile enthusiastically like a small child and then moved forward to hug him. But she stopped herself at right time realizing what she was about to do, making Arnav confused.
"pomegranate." She shouted the word that came first to her mind causing Arnav to ask "what?" Lifting the bowl from counter behind her, she brought it in front of his face and enquired "do you want to eat pomegranate? It's really nice!" Parting his lips apart in disbelief, he first looked at the bowl and then at his wife before muttering something to himself which sounded like 'unbelievable' and turned to kitchen counter.
Kushi bit her lower lip scolding herself for behaving like a fool. 'Decide kushi. Decide whether you want to be angry with him or not!' she ordered herself. Feeding herself with more pomegranates, she peeped to see Arnav who was transferring the mix from bowl to cloth. Suddenly feeling excited, she screamed "i know how to do it. I have seen people doing it."
"Will you move back and let me to do some work?" Arnav asked her shoving her backwards politely. Lifting the cloth near to his face, he stared at it for moment before beginning to press it. As no juice came of it, he pressed it applying little more pressure. The next second the cloth slipped away from his hand, dropping itself down into hot boiling oil, spilling it everywhere.
"Arnav." Kushi screamed running towards him. "Oh my god." She shrieked inspecting his hands which had small red spots indicating the contact with hot oil. Calling herself with different names for making him to do it, she began to panic when he held her shoulders. "Relax Kushi. It's just small wound. There is no need to get panic." He tried to calm her down.
She sighed dejectedly. "I am sorry, Arnav. Really sorry. I don't want this jelabi. Let's go and sleep." She pouted wretchedly pulling his arms. But he didn't move. "No way, Kushi. You have asked me something for the first time. So we are not leaving until i make jelabi." Arnav said adamantly ignoring her arguments.
"And also how can i leave it just like that. Remember few minutes back you have challenged Arnav singh Raizada. It's matter of my self-image. So in no way we are leaving." He explained her while replacing the old pan with new one. "Don't you want to taste delicious jelabi made by your husband?"
"Delicious?" she repeated sarcastically wriggling her eyebrow. Arnav shot back "of course it has to be delicious. After all it's going to be cooked by Arnav Singh Raizada himself. ASR does very thing perfectly. Being it frying jelabi or..."
"Or destroying others life!" he stopped blending the mix hearing his wife's voice and turned to her. "Sandeep manohar jha." She pronounced each syllable carefully observing his reaction which changed from shock to anger to surprise. "How do you know about him?" he asked perplexedly.
"i am aditya gupta's daughter. Give me some credit for it. I have my own investigation team." She replied proudly. "Oh...well, the team which gave you all information about Lavanya." he said mockingly gaining a loving punch on his chest from his wife. "Well, what can they do if you hide the truth from world and protected it secretly?" She questioned him.
"I didn't hide it Kushi. Your father did that and I just used it to lavanya's benefit. Even di and nani has no idea about it. It was good thing that i didn't tell anyone because when Lavanya became normal, she acted weird and started avoiding everyone until one day when she broke down to me. She told me the whole truth. I was angry on your father but i chose to be silent as i was sure that rekindling past will affect lavanya more than your brother."
"I wanted to make your father lose on professional front just like sandeep. Lavanya was very reluctant at beginning in accepting me as she thought she doesn't deserve me. But slowly everything fell into place. Even our engagement date had been finalised. Everything was perfectly fine until your brother again entered my life nine months back." He paused sighing and then continued.
"It was a business party. I was searching for Lavanya when i found her at corner. Someone was talking to her and she was crying. As soon as i reached there, she ran out from that place. That's when I saw your brother. I still remember his words."

'So that wh*** is the reason behind the young growing business tycoon Arnav Singh Raizada. I will tell you one thing; she is not worth of it. I have seen girls better than wh***.if you want...'

'Shut your bl**** mouth, arjun. I swear to god that i kill you with my hands if you dare to call her with that name again.'
'By holding my collar like this or shouting at top of your voice, don't think that you can change the fact that she has become wh***. What do you think? By signing some important deals or by buying our share holders, you think that you can win us! Never!
Your whole life will not be enough to ruin us, you fool. A middle class bas***d like you can never ever defeat me.'
Silence prevailed in the kitchen. Arnav was the first one to break it by saying "lavanya left delhi that day. It took me two days to trace that she was in Bangalore. Though i tried to convince her, she pleaded me that she needed some more time and wanted to stay there for six months. I was so angry on your brother that he ruined everything within seconds. But your brother was right. I couldn't touch gupta industries; it was so huge."
"i also know that Lavanya is just one of the victim. There are many lives that your brother has spoiled. I really wanted him to feel the pain. I decided to hit him where it hurts the most. I chose you." Kushi raised her eyes to meet her husband's. He spoke in broken voice. "i wanted to hurt your brother but not you. As you were from London, i thought that you must have been used to these kind of stuff. So it won't take much time for you to move on. All i wanted was that one moment with your brother."'
"When i started to spend time with you, i realised what I was doing. I immediately decided to leave you and come back to Delhi before hurting you. But I don't know why, i was unable to do that. I really couldn't stay from you. I ..." he was interrupted by his wife voice.
"Arnav, i think oil has started to boil. Please make jelabi fast. I am really hungry." She said in her usual chirpy tone. Arnav understood that she didn't want him to talk about it right now. Even though he didn't know the reason why she stopped him, he just let it go as he didn't want her to stress her more.
