Part Two: (kindaa filler)

"Hello hi bye bye! Sasuma, hum toh kehte hai ki woh phatti sari - "

"Bas Manorama! Hum is bareme aur bate nahi sunna chawat hai!"

"Par Sasuma -"

"Humne kaha na, bas kijiye! Wahapar Anjali bitiya kaha hai, kaisi hai, kuch bhi malum nahi aur yaha pe aap -"

"Wahi toh me saying! Ki uske reasonwa yeh sub huwat hai! Ab hum kaisi humri bitwa ki shaadi uske bahanse -"

"Enough."

His voice was cool, indifferent. They recoiled from it as though burnt. Nani recognized it. How could she not? This was her grandson returned. This is what was hidden under all the Khushi influence. She wondered how she had not noticed how soft he had become recently, how tolerant. His voice had the warmth that she had been yearning to hear for all these years. And now that it was gone again, she regretted it. If only she had noticed it sooner, relished those moments when Chotte had been, well, Chotte. Their Chotte. Her thoughts strayed to Khushi. Had she really done these unthinkable things? She wished the girl had spoken up. Khushi had become a part of this family, she realized. Losing her felt almost as bad as the fear of losing Anjali. She was shaken out of her reverie as she heard him speak again, in that tone which he had of late rarely used.

"I'm going out to look for Di."

"Bhai, mujhe - let me come with you -"

"Yes, yes, I'll come too! Saat mein bhoonenge! I mean, dhoonenge -"

"Saale Saab, hum bhi jayenge Rani Sahiba ko -"

"No. I'm going alone. Aap log yaha rukiye. Let me know if you hear anything."

And with that, he was gone.

"Hum Rani Sahiba ko nafrat karte hai!"

She shivered as the winds whispered the words she never wanted to hear.

"Aapki bina ji nehi payunga, Khushiji!"

She shivered again as she felt bile rise in her throat.

He must have done something. It all made sense. She would have never thought - if only she had known this is what he had in mind she would have never kept quiet. She always thought he loved Anjaliji. Wasn't she just circumstance? Didn't he say - didn't he say he never wanted to get engaged to her? And - didn't he say that they were the ones who misbehaved with him? Her eyes welled up at the thought of how easily she had believed him, desperate to see the goodness in everybody. Everybody but him.

And again her thoughts returned to Arnav, Arnav's lips, Arnav's eyes, Arnav's voice, Arnav's heart. For she had seen it. She had finally seen it. She had seen it through its absence in his eyes when he had looked at her before she had run away. How could she have hidden it from him? He had asked her, had he not? He had asked whether her fiance had done something, whether he had hurt her. She had been on the verge of spilling but then why had she stopped? To save Anjaliji's marriage? And how had that worked out? Now it was all her fault. If her suspicions were correct, then Anjaliji's life was indeed in danger because of her, and only her. Which is why she needed to find her. Anjaliji was like her sister - no, she was her sister. She loved her unbearably like she loved Jiji, and she knew her Anjaliji loved her too. She owed it to that love to find her. She did not question these sisterly feelings, but embraced it - they kept her gnawing depression at bay. She could not break. She had to be strong. She let her love for the other woman wash over, make her feel responsible and protective of her safety. She was going to fix this. She would find her no matter what. And she would return Anjaliji to her beloved Chotte. She would tell him everything then. Together they would ensure that that pathetic excuse of a human being could not harm her Anjaliji or anyone in that family ever again. And then she would leave forever. It was a great plan.

She smiled as she remembered how he had used to ridicule her plans. Her eyes widened and watered as she was immediately flooded and drowned with another onslaught of memories overwhelming her mind and dizzying her knees and senses. But she could not afford this. There was little time to waste. She needed to find her Anjaliji and save her. She walked hurriedly on the road which would take her to the temple where Anjali had gone. It was quite chilly. She wrapped the flimsy excuse of her dupatta tighter around herself and hired a rickshaw from the side of the road. Her slipper fell off and as she bent to pick it up, she noticed a faint train of drop-like smudges on the ground. Her eyes followed it along the road and out of sight, and her heart stilled. So this is how he had done it. But all was not lost yet.

"Bhaiya, aap isi raaste pe chaliye, hum bata denge kab dusri raaste pe jana hai," said Khushi, her mind whirring as she crawled the ground on all fours, looking for more signs, missing the flummoxed expression on the driver's face as he asked her to get in first.

Her heart was thudding in a quite different way as they sped off, her eyes firmly glued to the trail. She was sure it would lead her to the accident site. Arnavji would probably be there by now, but she pushed that thought aside. He did not matter right now, Anjaliji did. They said they didn't find her body. That meant she could have limped or walked or rolled away, right? That meant that there was a good chance that she was alive, right? She shuddered to think if Shyamji - no, Shyam had hired goons to kill her had the accident failed to fulfill its purpose. No, she would not let that happen. She would get to Anjaliji and she would save her. She just had to stick to this plan, and everything would be okay. She would not lose another family member. She couldn't.

"Hai Devi Maiyya, hamari raksha karna," she whispered, her belief half lost in the tragic turn of events.

Too bad Devi Maiyya never listened or followed Khushi Kumari Gupta's well made plans.
