Chapter 20

The shiny rays of Mid-June filtered through the gleaming window, spreading the warmth in the whole room, Khushi stirred in sleep, she batted her lashes lazily, no longer having his warmth beside her. Her hand raised to touch the hard body against her but his side was empty and cold and she sucked in an irritated breath and opened her eyes fully.

He had told her the last night about his meeting but she forgot completely.

"Daughter, are you awake?"

Mrs.Jain's voice came from the other side of the door and Khushi roused and pulled herself into sitting position.

"Yes, please come in"

She called her in and with the slightest push of the door, Mrs. Jain had slipped inside the room, closing the door behind her.

"Good morning"

She regarded Khushi with her usual soft smile and Khushi smiled back, replying to her.

"When did Arnav lave for office?"She asked, slipping out from the coverlet and sliding her legs on the one side of the bed.

"He left for office early in the morning"Mrs.Jain replied and then paused for a long moment, turning on her heels Khushi raised her hand and opened the door of the cupboard. To feel the silence stretched a long, Khushi gave back a glance through her shoulder to Mrs.Jain and found the waves of hesitation on her face. A frisson of concern across her face to think if she was upset or needed her help.

"Do you want to say something?"

She turned back and asked softly,Mrs.Jain looked hesitant a moment before lifting her eyes at Khushi.

"Don't you know what day is today?"

Mrs.Jain asked and a puzzled frown touched Khushi's brow.

"If there is something important today that I don't know?"

She asked with the hint of slight guilt to think what important thing she forgot that she shouldn't have forgotten.

"Today is Arnav's birthday"

She said, with her soft smile and a sudden twinge of guilt rushed through her veins, her eyes wetted with unshed tears to think she didn't even know today was her husband's birthday, a day that came after a year, a day when he came into this world, a day should be remembered and cherished. She sucked in a sharp breath, tilting her head aside so Mrs. Jain couldn't see the tears that burned her cheeks.

"I didn't know"

She felt a lump stuck on the wall of her throat and she gasped letting her words to choke slightly. Mrs.Jain had felt the sadness on her face that was the reason she didn't speak another word but came close to her and placed a hand over her shoulder.

"Don't be sad, daughter; it happens many times, it should take you years to know about him"

She squeezed Khushi's shoulder slightly to give her comfort and Khushi finally straightened her face and looked back at her.

"But I'm his wife, he never forgets anything about me, he is so caring about me but I forgot the day that I should remember"

Mrs. Jain's soft heart went out to the young girl who was unaware of her deep love for her husband. And she was determined to make them realize they were meant to be together, if one was like a soul for other than the other was like a breath.

"My dear daughter" crooned Mrs.Jain,"don't be sad, make this day memorable for him, and make him so much happy that he forgets everything except you"

She touched Khushi's cheek softly and felt her still for a moment. Though, she didn't know the real status of their marriage life but she could guess there was something missing there.

"How?"

Khushi asked,blinking back the sadness as her words seemed to register in her mind.

"It is you who have to do it by yourself; I can't help you in this matter"

She slightly caressed Khushi's cheek and then suppressing a smile turned back towards the door, closing it behind her and Khushi felt herself lost in scattered thoughts before her words completely drained in her mind and she realized what she could do to make him happy.

A smile of satisfaction curved her lips and color stained her cheeks as she promised to become a real wife to him in every sense.

Taking a long bath, dressed in casual wear she climbed down the stairs and walked towards the kitchen, as she stepped inside, she found Mrs.Jain preparing her breakfast. She turned around to sense her presence and suppressed a soft smile.

"Are you hungry?"

"Yes, I'm famished"Khushi replied by moving a hand on her stomach like a child, it was a long day and she had to do lots of preparation before Arnav's return.A delicious breakfast was needed to give her energy. Mrs.Jain smile placing the cheese, butter, sandwiches, bacon biscuits, a cup of hot tea on the tray and turned towards her, "make yourself comfortable on the chair and I serve you your breakfast"

Taking just few strides Khushi reached at the dinning room and sat on her chair, Mrs.Jain served her breakfast.

Khushi ravished the delicious breakfast with the hot cup of tea,Mrs.Jain placed the empty cup and plates on the tray and when she about to turn Khushi called her back.

"Daughter, do you want something?"

She turned and found Khushi standing a few steps away from her, yes, will you help me making Arnav's favorite food?"

She asked sweetly and Mrs.Jain smiled nodding her head. "yeah,sure"come I'll tell you what he likes in food"

Mrs. Jain signaled Khushi to join her and stepping close to her they both made their way towards the kitchen.

A whole day passed in the meetings and he couldn't get time to call her. He sighed tiringly, and twisted the key turned the vehicles towards his home with smile to think how would she react after seeing him a long day.
