Chapter 3- The magic?

Later that day, the double duo sat gloomily in Suhani's room.

"You're leaving me! And you're leaving me! And you got a man. I'm stuck here all by myself." Vidya fake sobbed.

"Okay first of all, they're going to camp not getting married. They're both coming back. Second of all, stop saying I have a man!" Mahi glowered.

"Okay, okay. Your boy-toy. Whatever," Niharika smiled, "Anybody wanna help me pack?" She continued.

"No, I don't wanna help anyone. I'm gonna sit here floating in my jellowy pool of self-pity." Mahi plopped onto the bed. Suhani smacked Vidya hard.

"Ow. What the hell was that, Suhani?!" She rubbed the new formed bump on her head.

"Look at what your psycho-analysis has done to her, you PSYCHO psycho-analyzer!" Niharika laughed at Suhani's unreasonable outbreak. Vidya muttered a quick whatever. Niharika and Suhani packed alone, as Mahi and Vidya sat in their individual mindsets of moping.

"Hey. You guys aren't gonna forget about me, are you?" Vidya asked childishly, sadly she was serious.

"No duffer, we won't. We'll be back in…"

"Three months." Mahi sighed conclusively. She was good at being depressed and whining. An idea flashed through her head.

"We should form a sisterhood?!" She said as a girl finding her teddy bear.

"Like the Ya-Ya sisterhood?" Vidya laughed. She was mocking her and Mahi was annoyed.

"No. Like the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants." She smiled at the mention of her favorite teen book.

"We don't have magical pants though. They lost them in the last book anyways." Niharika frowned.

"So? We can use something else…like a handbag or something?" Vidya suggested, renewing her mood.

"Sisterhood of the Traveling Handbag? It sounds gay." Suhani tried to zip her suitcase. "Hey, are those new?" She asked pointing to Vidya's feet; she was kicking off red plain sneakers.

"Nope. I found them in Nihu's closet." She stared down at her feet. They were nice shoes, not beat up of anything. Ordinary Chuck Taylor's, they had red fabric with a few unidentified Sharpie marks on it and wide white laces.

"They're Nihu's and they fit you?!" Niharika was an athlete, between the four; she had the largest and widest feet. They came in handy when she danced and played soccer. She had done kathak since she was six and her feet were great for trampling people in volleyball too, she had discovered last summer.

"Yeah yeah, stop hatin on the girl with the big feet." Niharika moped, Suhani looked on sympathetically. "Do they fit you?"

Niharika frowned and pulled on the shoe. She was pleasantly surprised when her wide sized nine foot slipped comfortably in the size 7 sneakers. She tried not to sound excited. "Nothing extravagant. They're comfy." She took a step and felt like she was weightless. "Really comfy. They're cute too. You try." Niharika gleamed as she shoved the shoe into Suhani's hand.

"Psht! And fall on my butt? Those shoes are yours." She passed them back, "No guys, isn't this a little weird? I mean doesn't THIS…" she pointed around, "remind you of anything?"

Vidya clapped her hands together in glee. "You're saying these shoes are magical or something and it was sheer instinct that Mahi advised forming a sisterhood earlier today?" Niharika asked, Vidya shook her head in agreement vigorously. She sighed, disappointed at Vidya's childishness.

"Well magic is everywhere." Mahi defended.

"These stink old tennis shoes are supposed to be magical>: Niharika continued to argue as she was offended that her friends believed that it took magic for the two of them to fit into the same pair of shoes.

"Suhani try them." Mahi commanded. Gingerly, she pulled the shoes on.

"Nice…" Niharika couldn't help but smile, "Not too big..." She smile faded. She accepted the magic as Suhani wiggled her toes. She pulled them off and handed them back as id apologizing. "Nihu, they're yours." She smiled and took back her property. "Mahi." Niharika said, signifying her turn. Mahi had hoped red sneakers would look ridiculous on her all black outfit but she was wrong- it looked hot!

"Wow, snug on me. And I'm a four." She quickly removed them, fearing their powers. Vidya smiled.

"So magic has come to us in the form of…shoes. These shoes will keep us together over the summer. Where one's feet goes, the other three will follow through these shoes. Whenever something important happens to us, we'll sum it up into one or two words and pass it on to the next…in addition to phone calls and letters, of course." Vidya said matter-of-factly. Suhani felt a stupendously good idea grazing over her, "I'll get them first. Spain's so exciting." She beamed, they nodded in agreement.

"Then me, since I'll be rotting with boredom." Mahi said suddenly unexcited again. "I'll send them to Nihu next so we can get some sports/boy action." She said as Niharika grinned evilly. With her…there was ALWAYS a guy.

"And I'll send them to poor little Ms. Mermaid, Vidya." She teased. It was final, set in stone. There were no rules for the sneakers, except one. The one and only: Never try to run from the police, or more importantly your sisters in the shoes. (Actually, you can run from the police all you want; just not from us.) Just to show the importance of the rule, it was scribed on the bottom sole of the left shoe. And so it was written. That was it; simple and easy.
