Angad

The noise, the excitement, the laughter, the lights, and the sudden smell of happiness . The hall was filled with the incense of joy, the scent that I would always crave for. From the little kids in their heavy garments running wild to the elders talking about futile politicians it was all what I craved for. If an introduction is need, then I call myself Angad. I walked into the hall, reluctantly looking around for a familiar face. Weddings always were so hectic, I didn't want to disturb anyone by asking for directions to where the bride and groom were. I just kept walking through the chaos with my bouquet looking for someone, anyone.
Honestly speaking, I didn't want to come here at all. It's a bit difficult to wish a couple good luck, when the groom was supposed to marry your aunt 5 years ago. I really don't know Ms. Nisa very well, I mean, how well can you actually know your High School teacher? But even though I hate to admit it, Mr. Das helped me out a lot in these 5 years. From work to everything else, he helped me a lot. So, I guess I owe it to him to come a wish them good luck. I saw the bride and groom sitting taking pictures with every guest and it reminded me of my own wedding 5 years ago. It's hard to believe 5 years have past already. Every moment with my wife in these years was like heave on earth. Luckily we didn't take pictures with every guest like Mr. Das is, we just did our own thing. But now I wish we had more pictures, so I could relive those day, those memories, those moments of joy.
"Well look who decided to show up," exclaimed Mr. Das as I walked up to them. "Congratulations," I said while reaching out to shake hands with Mr. Das. He stepped up and gave me a hug while thanking me for coming. I couldn't help but feel awkward around the couple, knowing that my aunt was at home alone right now. Reluctantly I gave a warm smile to Ms. Nisa, well Mrs. Nisa now I guess. "Thank you for coming Angad, it really means a lot," Ms. Nisa said kindly. I knew she meant it, she was always a nice lady. "I wouldn't miss it for the world, so where's the food," I replied sarcastically since I really didn't know what to say seriously.
I left the two while they were still laughing at my very not funny joke. My first instinct was to leave, but I decided to stay when I saw an old friend. It was amazing, 5 years ago I had no old friends, everyone was so new and now we've come to a point where we call the people we haven't kept in touch with for the past years, or haven't even thought about for that note, we call them old friends. I wasn't the most popular in high school, and from that I remember after a while I wasn't the most loved either. But still, it was a time I'd never forget. I met some great people, I fell in love with my wife in high school. A sudden ache came to my heart when I thought about Vedika, a sudden urge to hit someone came along with it. Just then Raj walked up to me. Raj Verma was a great man, and a great friend, who knew my ex-girlfriends, ex-boyfriend, would be one my best friends 5 years later? But he was, Raj was maybe the only reason I didn't end up on the cover of some news paper with the headlines, "Suicide" written all over it. He was my only hope right now. "Hey man, what's good?" Raj asked handing me a drink. "Just trying to get by without any trouble, what about you?, I replied. "Just here and there," Raj answered without much care. Raj and I were maybe the two sorriest men alive. Here we were amongst almost all our high school buddies and yet we here all alone. "So, where's Shazad?" I asked looking around. "I don't know, didn't look. Man, how times change. I haven't seen Shazad for long man, he was like my brother back then," Raj said with regret in his voice. I knew it was regret because, it was the same regret I felt for leaving New York in the first place. "So, anything new with the case?" I asked with hope. "No man, but you don't worry I'll figure something out," Raj assured me. I knew it wasn't true, nothing could happen now…but I decided to still go along with Raj, "Yeah, I know".
Raj left to catch up with Shazad I some others, that's when saw her. There she was, Kripa Sharma in the flesh. It funny how she looked so different now. But still so beautiful. Kripa was always beautiful. I haven't talked to her since my wedding day when she hung up on me, but I read a lot about her in the papers. She's one big person now. I read she's going to be writing the story for a feature film too. Even though I knew I was one of her least favorite people, I still decided to start a conversation. I walked up behind her and handed her a glass of champagne. "Thanks," she said without even looking at me. "Your welcome," I replied. I saw her stiffen up the minute she heard my voice. She turned out with the angriest look I've ever seen. Boy, she really did hate me. "I cant believe it," Kripa murmured walking away. Now I just couldn't help but follow her. "You never kept in touch," I said walking side by side with her. "You mean after you cheated on me," she replied sarcastically. I found it a bit amusing too. " Yeah," I said apologetically. I could tell Kripa wasn't going to let it go, so I decided to start another conversation. "How's life…read a lot about you in the papers," I said. Kripa rolled her eye's and looked at me with disgust, "No! You don't just come up to me 5 years after you cheated one me and pretend like were friends or something, we're not," she made that point very clear. "Kripa," I said quietly unable to anything else, really because I didn't know what to say. "So where is she anyway? Your wife…I thought you guys were inseparable," she said looking around for Vedika. "She's around," I replied with a smile. "I don't see her around you honey," Kripa said trying to mock me. I lowered my myself a bit so I could meet her eye's, "Neither do I,". Kripa laughed and decided to make the most of it, "Did you cheat on her too? Or did she finally see you for the jack ass you are? Dear God, she left you didn't she," ranted Kripa still mocking me. "Your right Kripa, we're not friends. So I think we really good stay out of each others business," I said as I walked away. And that was my indirect way of telling Kripa to shut the hell up!
