CHAPTER 21

"To see Saira." He said plainly.

"Who's that?" Gemma asked.

"Angad's daughter. Kripa's best friend daughter."

"So cheating runs in the family?" Gemma asked angry for her friend.

"Gemma, enough! Kripa, he went because he needed to see them. You need to see them too. You all need to work something out."

"I told Angad he should marry her." Kripa said, staring at the dashboard.

"It's a little too late for that; he's well too much in love with you." Kartik said matter-of-factly.

"I wish he wasn't. I wish I could just…go away." Kripa said quietly, unaware she was thinking out loud.

"Chup Kripa. Stop being dumb." Gemma said, catching her off guard.

"Kripa, pull yourself together. If you every talk about dying again. I'll kill you, understand, she said angrily" Gemma.

Before they knew it, they arrived at a small white condominium. It was a beautiful place, clearly Mahek's choice. She always had good taste, after all she was with Angad. The three of them, opened the car door and began walking to the door. As Kripa was about to ring the doorbell the door automatically opened. At the door, was a slender, tall women who stood at 5'7", she had gorgeous blue eyes, standing in front of Kripa in a white tube top and light blue jeans that hugged her gorgeous hourglass figure.

"Oh my God, is that K.. Krr..Kassy, I mean Kripa. How are you babe? I can't believe its you. Please come in. Oh hi Kartik." Managed Mahek.

They all come in and sat down on a black leather sofa. They were getting settled down, when a little girl came in running, screaming.

"Mama. Mama. I am not going to play with Katie anymore. She cheats and then she calls me a cheater. We were playing outside …" Saira
"Beta, I know. You don't have to play Katie. We will talk about this later. Right now Mama has some friends over," Mahek said calmly.

Kripa saw the little girl and couldn't take her eyes off her. She was like an angel. She had her mother's brown curls, blue eyes, and her attitude. It was apparent that this was Angad's little girl. She had his smile, his dimples. She was perfect.

" Hi. Honey. My name is Kripa, I am your Mama's friend, she said extending her hand to touch the top of her head," Kripa.

" You are Mama's friend. Hi. So Nice to meet you." She said extending her hand to shake hands with Kripa, Saira. She certainly had Angad's charm. She could make you smile with just one glance.

"Is um…Angad here?" Kripa said awkwardly. She watched the child's face glow as she said Angad's name.

"Angad's here! He was playing hide and seek with us! He always peeked though, so ummm…" the girl stroked her chin, "He's in the den! You know that's my best friend, nah?" She said in a grown-up tone. Kripa smiled and kneeled down to her level, "I've been friends with your Mama for a long time now, so will you be my friend too?"

"Umm…" she said, deep in thought. "Sure." The girl turned to Mahek, "Mama, all your friends are becoming friends with me, they like me better." She boasted.

"Yeah, yeah. Did you do your homework?" Mahek asked, hand on hips.

"Uh…I think Katie's calling me. Bye Mama, bye Kripa." Saira ran off.

"She's adorable." Kripa said. Mahek nodded and gestured her to follow her to the den. Kripa followed her to a well-lit library area. Angad was sitting nervously on a large leather loveseat.

"Angad, looks like your fianc doesn't trust you at all. She followed you here." Tension built in the room, as Mahek burst into laughter. Her laugh was high and cheery. Kripa and Angad exchanged glances of helplessness.

"Oh c'mon guys, what's wrong with your sense of humor? I was kidding." Kripa laughed nervously. Angad joined her and suddenly stopped.

"So Mahek, how have you been doing?" Kripa asked, crossing her legs.

"Great. Saira's a handful but Farhan helps a lot."

"Farhan?" Kripa asked curiously.

"My husband. Fianc, actually. Thrice divorced, twice wed…all three times to yours truly. We have a crazy relationship really." She said laughing, sipping her green tea, "Oh how rude of me, would either of you want something? Tea, coffee, soft drinks? Anything else?"

They shook her head. "So what is this Farhan of yours like? Tall, dark, and handsome?" Kripa asked, once again assuming the role of the old Kripa, child-like and innocent.

Mahek sighed like a teen smitten for the first time, she pointed at a portrait hanging on a wall. There stood a man in a large leather chair, perhaps the one Angad was in now. His blue suit held stark contrast against the red leather, with light stubble on his cheeks and a kindly angled nose. His lips were curled in a light smile, stern and unforgiving but his green-grey eyes smiling.

"Wow, he's hot." Kripa said, as Angad glanced at the picture and glared at Kripa.

"A little, unnerving I know. It's okay, Angad you're allowed to be jealous. Just think of all the years, Kripa wanted to strangle all of your slutty girlfriends. Oh damn, I was one of them. I shouldn't say that." Mahek said laughing.

Kripa giggled uncomfortably.

"So how's your family Kripa?" Mahek asked sipping her coffee. She wished the gap between and Kripa would close, to her disappointment the question seemed to have struck a sore nerve.

How was her family? Broken, Kripa wanted to say but she'd rather stay quiet.

"Fine." She choked out before she let out a stifled 'excuse me.' She left the room, and fled to the bathroom, she used to live here before. She never stayed in the same house as her father. Her father, she had forgotten about him.

"I said something wrong, didn't I?" Mahek slapped her forehead, looking to Angad.

He didn't lie. "Yeah. Her mom and sister died a while back and she and her dad aren't getting along. She's living at my house."

"And Prithvi?" she asked gingerly. Angad's teeth clenched.

"I'm glad that little bas***d is dead." He hissed. Mahek looked suddenly sad and confused. Angad explained everything that had happened after she left. In fact, the day after she left was the day Kripa's family began to fall apart.

"Oh man. Let me go talk to her." Mahek left to the backyard, into her garden where Kripa usually sat when she was upset.

"Hey Kassy…I'm sorry about Aunty and Choti. I didn't know…" Mahek said putting her hand on her shoulder, Kripa wiped her tears and turned to smile at Mahek.

"I'm fine. Aaliya, Kartik, Angad, Nikhil, Gemma, Tanya…they all helped a ton. Don't worry about me baby. How's your life been?" Mahek raised an eyebrow at how confidently Kripa had learned to lie to her.

"Who's Nikhil? And since when is Gemma here?"

"Nikhil is our little Aaliya's honewala hubby." She watched Mahek gasp, "I know, and Gemma just flew in a couple of days ago. Get this, she and Kartik are married." Kripa beamed at her new-found relatives.

"WHAT?! Since when?" She leaned in forward like a little girl craving a secret.

"Three years. But anyways, tell me about YOU!" She laughed and told about how she and Farhan had met as terrible enemies at pre-school. But as fate had it, his little girl, Aisha and her little girl, Saira became friends. There stubborn children insisted on seeing each other every day. Soon her and Farhan became friends and got married as a compromise. Aisha needed a mother and Saira needed a father. They were an adorable family, though she and Farhan didn't love each other. Sure enough, they fell idiotically in love with each other. The first divorce, Mahek suspected Farhan was cheating. He wasn't. She apologized and they remarried. Second time, Farhan thought Mahek was cheating. She wasn't. They remarried. Third time, Mahek thought Farhan was cheating. Ironically, he was that time. But they both were over it, Farhan had wined and dined her and begged for forgiveness and now they are engaged to be married.

"Wow. You and he are crazy, and exactly alike. You'll never change. Will you, Mehu?" Kripa asked, slapping her jaw.

"Nope. But you've changed…a lot." She said in discomfort. Kripa knew and she hated being reminded. That she wasn't the same, sarcastic, bubbly Kripa she used to be; instead, she was replaced by an always brooding, fearful, sad Kripa. She wished she could be the same but the turn of events was such, she couldn't.

"I know. Maybe…it's for the better? I don't know, Mehu. I really missed you and Gem and Tanya, I can't trust. I never could. Aaliya has always been there for me. She's my guardian angel. I wish I didn't change. Sometimes, I wish I…" wouldn't have fell for Angad, she wanted to say. But those were one of the phrases that weren't meant to say. They just hung in the air, unsaid. Instead of thinking of completion to the statement, she just rested her head on Mahek's shoulder.

"I know baby. Don't worry. You have me. You have Gemma. It'll get better. You have Angad."

"I DON'T WANT ANGAD!" Kripa screamed in what came out as a whisper.

"You don't love him? C'mon Kripa, you've loved him ever since you guys were…three? And he asked if you'd marry him and you said boys were icky. And he said he thought girls had cooties but you're too pretty to have them."

Kripa laughed at the memory. She wondered if Angad still had the scar from when she pushed him from the top of the slide. It was on his back somewhere, she never paid enough attention. Mahek joined her laughter.

"Yeah. I know. But sometimes I think I'm not good enough for him…"

"BULL SH**!" Mahek yells too loud.

"I know but think about it. I'm this less than average girl dead in love with a man that has gorgeous women falling for him left and right. How would you feel?"

"Amazed, and confused; if I was a 'less than average' girl but you're extraordinary, Kripa. You're intelligent, beautiful, sweet, and funny. Face it girl, you're SEXY!" she put emphasis on the word sexy, like the used to when they were young girls and drooled over their immature actor crushes.

"Mehu. You have no idea how sorry I was that you left. I felt so guilty." Kripa said, still leaning on Mahek. She provided such comfort that she hadn't felt in ages. She finally had her best friend back, Aaliya was in her own place. But this, this was practically her sister.

"It wasn't you. It was my stubborn dumb ass. I was so hung up on Angad, when you and I both knew I didn't love him…you loved him. You love him. I was wrong. But I'm still glad I have Saira."

"Me too. She's precious. I love her already. Who's her godmother?" She smiled; she wanted to catch up on her best friend's life.

"You don't know. But it was you. No one else deserved the honor but you. I kept on calling Angad cuz you were never at home. Now I know you don't even live there anyways."

"It's sad Saira has never met her godmother then. I'm sorry I missed so much."

"I'm sorry I missed so much too. Everything's so different." The two hugged and Angad finally found the two.

"I ALWAYS walk in on the chick moments, don't I?" Angad said sighing, sitting on the bench next to the emotional women.

"Yup!" The two say laughing. Kripa laughed heartily and Angad saw the twinkle in her eyes. She was happy, even if it was for a moment. Saira became quick friends with Kripa and Angad, Kripa mostly. She refused to let her go home.
