"MAA!" Juhi heard Rey shout and rushed to his room followed by Rannvijay.
"Kya hua? Chilla kyu rahe ho?" She asked while studying him. He was standing in front of her just out of the shower.
"Yeh kya hai?" He pointed at a 3-piece suit neatly ironed and kept on his bed.
"Suit hai." Rannvijay butted in trying hard not to laugh at Rey.
"Voh mujhe bhi pata hai!" He sneered at him. "But yahan kyun hai?"
"Aaj sham ko tumhe yeh pehenana hai." Juhi stated matter-of-factly.
"No ways main yeh nahi pehenane wala!" He gave a horrified look. He had never worn a 3-piece suit even in his office, let alone he'll wear it now.
"Shaam ko ladkiwale aa rahe hai. You should look good." Rannvijay gave him a wide smile. Rey didn't fail to notice the hidden smirk. Rannvijay knew very well that Rey hated the word 'ladkiwale' and so he purposely said it to irritate him.
"Maa inse kaho ki yeh firse voh word mere saamne na le. Warna main bhaag jaunga!" Rey gave a stern look to Rannvijay making him laugh.
"Tum baap-bete mujhe pagal kar doge. I'm not going to hear any nonsense from you." She pointed at Rey. "I want to see you well dressed in the evening!" Saying so she left the room and Rey slumped on his bed.
"Tum itna kyu chid rahe ho?" Rannvijay asked, even though he very well knew the answer.
"Mujhse pooche bagair mera rishta bhej diya, yahan tak ki meri shaadi almost fix karadi and now she wants me to wear this! Aaj tak office mein itna formal nahi hua and here for this.. urg.. this.." he wasn't getting a right word "for this she wants me to be all dressed up! Aur aap pooch rahe ho ki main kyu chid raha hoon?" Rey blasted out.
No, he didn't hate his parents. He loved them and respected their decisions but all this was too sudden for him and at some point he felt he was being forced into it. Rannvijay kept his hand around Rey's shoulder and shook him lightly.
"Sorry." Rey mouthed, realizing he said too much.
"Don't be and just hear me out." He assured him.
Rey looked up at his father and waited for him to continue. "Listen son, I know yeh bohot jaldi ho raha hai but just think from your mother's point of view. Taani se milne ke baad I've seen her, she has totally accepted Taani as her daughter-in-law, and no, don't think we are pressurizing you for all this." Rey rolled his eyes at the irony. "Aisi shakal mat banao. Vo pichle do saal se apni bahu ki khoj mein hain and now that she has found her, she fears that if she delays you will come up with a way to avoid it. Tumhe pata hai na that she loves you a lot and always wants good for you. She wants you to feel love for someone aur mujhe pata nahi kyu but usse lagta hai ki Taani is the one for you!"
"So iska matlab hai ki aaj rishta pakka karke agle hafte humari shaadi kara dena chahate ho tum log?" He said still not digesting the fact that in few hours he'll be seeing someone, probably the one with whom he'll be spending the rest of his life.
"Tum pagal ho? Uski padhai abhi tak complete nahi hui hai." Rannvijay was stunned to know what was going on in Rey's head.
"Exactly! Voh abhi tak bachhi hai Paa." Rey stopped when he heard Rannvijay chuckle.
"Galati se bhi uske saamne usse bachhi mat bulana. Trust me, you'll repent it later." He laughed more.
"My point is." Rey was still adamant "Voh abhi padh rahi hai. After completing her studies uski bhi koi plannings hogi, voh kuch banna chahati hogi."
"Uff." Rannvijay held his head. "Tum abhi kuch mat socho just meet her today and mind you, no pranks!" Rannvijay knew his son very well. He was sure Rey would plan something to get out of the 'shaadi' mess. Even though Rey had promised Juhi that he won't let her down and meet the girl with an open mind, Rannvijay knew that Rey will find a way to stay by his promise and get away with this.
"Paa." Rey pouted.
"Get suited up son, your life is going to be a thrill from now on." He winked at Rey and left.
Taani sat in front of her dresser drying her hair thinking about Rey; how does he look, will he be interested in meeting her, will he respect her and what not. She was feeling really scared to meet a stranger. That's how she was, a nerve-wrecking person.
Shivam came into her room and found her lost. "Kya baat hai Taani?" She seemed to be oblivious of his presence. "Taani?" He waved his hands in front of her face to gain her attention.
"Bhai? Aap kab aaye? Kuch kaam tha?"
"Nothing important. Tum kahan khoyi hui thi? Sab theek hai na?"
"Main voh bas aaj shaam ke baare mein soch rahi thi."
"Agar tumhe nahi milne jana hai toh bata do, I'll talk to mom." He gave her assurance seeing her nervousness.
"Bhai I've promised her aur mujhe promises todne acche nahi lagte. It's just that I'm nervous to meet Reyansh. I mean main unhe jaanti bhi nahi hoon, yahan tak ki voh dikhte kaise hai voh bhi nahi pata. But since I've promised mumma I will go."
"Taani stop being so nervous, main bhi wahi rahunga. And trust me main kisi bhi aire-gaire ladke se tumhari shaadi nahi hone dunga." He promised her which boosted up her confidence.
...
"Kya baate ho rahi hai yahan?" Tanya asked coming into Taani's room with a dress bag in her hand.
"Main Taani ko tips de raha hoon ki voh uss Reyansh se kaise bache." Shivam said to lighten the mood.
"Shivam iske dimaag mein fitoor ki baatein mat bharo aur Taani yeh lo." She handed over the dress bag to Taani.
"Yeh kya hai?" Taani asked and opened the bag to find a designer suit inside it. "Mumma, yeh kya hai?" She asked horrified.
"Yeh dress hai jo tum aaj sham ko pehenogi." Tanya instructed her.
"No ways!" Taani screamed hearing her. "Main yeh nahi pehenane wali!"
"Toh kya tum jeans pehen ke ladka dekhne jaogi?" Tanya asked folding her arms and stared at Taani.
"Haan!" Shivam said. "Jo ladka isse pasand karega, he should not select her based on what she wears. Just because ladka dekhne jana hai, iska matlab yeh thodi hota ki Taani itna kuch bhaari dress pehene?"
"Bhai sahi keh rahe hai mumma, main casually toh jeans wagera pehenti hoon. Agar aaj itni dress up hoke gayi aur phir unhone kal mujhe jeans mein dekha toh unhe aisa nahi lagna chahiye ki maine impress karne ke liye dress pehena tha."
"Par beta jeans pehen ke jaana accha nahi lagta. Hum koi casual dinner pe nahi ja rahe hai." Tanya tried to explain her.
"But mumma yeh dress jyada heavy nahi hai?" Taani asked pointing at the dress.
"I want my daughter to look beautiful."
"Your daughter is beautiful." Shivam butted in. "Usse yeh sab pehenane ki jarurat nahi hai to look beautiful."
"Thanks bhai. Mumma main aapki baat maan rahi hoon na Reyansh se milne ki toh aap bhi mujhe decide karne de ki mujhe kya pehenana hai."
...
"Mumma ko toh bol diya that I'll decide my clothes, but what will I wear?" Taani scratched her head looking inside her wardrobe. She picked out a gown "Nahi, yeh jyada lagega." and kept it back. "Jeans hi pehen leti hoon. No, phir mumma gussa karegi. Bad idea!" She kept digging into her closet and finally came to a decision of what to wear.
Juhi was running through the house and instructing the workers to arrange things for the dinner. Looking at the arrangements, it was hard to say that there was only a dinner that was being planned.
"Maa?" Rey went up to her.
"Rey tum abhi tak ready nahi huye? They'll be coming over anytime now!"
"If that anytime is two hours then sure they are coming anytime now!" He taunted looking at the time.
"Okay. I'm sorry. I'm just paranoid"
"Kya hua Maa?"
"Kuch nahi. Mujhe bas sab perfect chahiye aaj sham ke liye. Trust me Rey, you'll really like her. Voh tumhare liye bilkul sahi hai. How do you say, yeah, she's your type!" Juhi caressed his hair.
"My type?" Rey questioned her. He really thought that she had gone crazy. "Aur ek baat, pakka koi surprise nahi hai?"
"Oh, come on! Tum apni Maa ko trust nahi karte?" She asked back.
"Not at all in this matter!" He muttered.
"Tum apne kamre mein jao. Yahan reh ke na khud kaam karoge aur na hi mujhe koi kaam karne doge."
...
It was time for the Raichand's to arrive. Juhi was all excited and secretly praying for Rey and Taani to like each other. Rannvijay was all relaxed and having his fun time irritating Rey.
"Rey tumhare liye phone hai." Rannvijay called out for Rey.
"Kaun hai?"
"Sharon."
Rey went to the backyard to attend the call. He didn't want his buddies to get the news about him meeting a girl. Just when he left, the Raichand's arrived. After the initial greetings, they all made their way into the living room.
"Kal tumhara phone aaya toh I was shocked. Mera matlab hai humne Taani ki shaadi ke baare mein abhi tak socha bhi nahi tha." Tanya said to start a conversation.
"Main samajh sakti hoon. Uss din Taani se milke mujhe bohot accha laga tha. Ghar pe aake poora time main yeh soch rahi thi ki kaash meri beti hoti, bilkul Taani jaisi. Par ab voh toh ho nahi sakta toh maine socha ki agar Taani hi mere ghar beti banke aaye toh? Isiliye maine tumse baat ki."
Taani blushed a little on hearing her. She felt awkward sensing everyone's gaze on her after what Juhi said.
"Reyansh kahin dikhai nahi de raha?" Shivam asked to divert everyone's attention from Taani.
"Haan voh bas ek important call attend kar raha hai." Rannvijay answered.
"Yeah, okay, fine. Now keep!" They heard Rey enter through the back door.
"Lo aagaya." Juhi smiled.
Rey disconnected the call and looked up to see everyone except Taani looking at him. She was looking down at her hands. She felt nervous to look up at him. From the corner of her eyes she saw him coming forward, but she could see only his feet.
"Hey." He greeted as he walked and sat beside Juhi.
"Yeh hai mera beta Rey." Juhi smiled proudly.
"Tumhara beta kaafi good looking hai." Tanya playfully told Juhi.
"You're no less beautiful." Rey gave a breathtaking smile to her.
"Wrong woman son." Rannvijay commented making everyone laugh.
Taani too giggled and looked up feeling a bit calmer than before. Her eyes stopped and widened on Rey. He looked stunning in a blue denim blazer, a white T-shirt and a pair of jeans. She praised herself for deciding to wear palazzo pants. Rey's eyes too landed on her and he smiled at her. She smiled back.
"So, Reyansh, what do you do?" Shivam asked. Even though he knew of Rey, he just couldn't do anything about his protectiveness towards Taani.
"Rey is fine and I'm an architect." Rey smiled at Shivam.
"Taani interior designing padh rahi hai." Shivam stated and Rey looked at Taani.
"That's nice. I would love to see some of your designs." Rey tried to initiate a conversation with Taani.
"Sure." She replied looking everywhere but him.
Juhi smiled at Taani's nervousness and her pure innocence. She asked Rey to take Taani with him to the backyard so they could get some privacy to talk alone. Rey asked Taani if she would want to go with him. She nodded her head hesitantly and walked out with him from the door Rey had entered some time ago.
...
Both Rey and Taani were walking quietly stealing glances of each other. Rey was waiting for Taani to start the conversation, he didn't want to seem pushing himself on her. But seeing that she wasn't starting, he finally initiated the conversation.
"Interior designer haan?" He had no clue how to begin.
"Not yet, six months still left for graduating." She looked at him and now she could clearly see that she wasn't the only one who was nervous.
There was silence again. They were still walking when Taani tripped and was about to fall when Rey caught her just in time. He made her stand upright and inquired if she was fine. She just nodded at him.
"Taani?" He started chuckling reminiscing about some earlier incident. "Tum Maa se kaise takrayi?"
Taani giggled as she understood his underlying comment and said, "Waise toh bilkul nahi jaise aapse takrayi!" She giggled even more recalling their first meet.
