Nisha knew what isolation felt like. She knew the pain of loneliness and that the darkness could consume all of the happiness she felt during the day. She had a great group of cousins that lit her world up. Dolly Di, Keerti and Jwala were sweet and always made her smile. Umesh Bhaiya, Sukku and Bunty's constant jugalbandi was a great laugh. But her travel buddy Kabir...well Kabir seemed to understand her on a level that her cousins never could. She loved her cousins, but her cousins were only a distraction to the emptiness she felt when she retreated to her empty room at the end of the night.
Laxmi was a great mom, but she was never really able to be around for her. Nisha understood the sacrifices that her mother made for her. The empty room that she lived was always quiet, the world around her faded to black and all the sunshine from the day disappeared from her heart.
Nisha felt completely alone.
Nisha felt completely empty.
Nisha felt completely worthless.
Ping
The bright light of her phone lit up next to her head on her pillow. The tears that blurred her vision cascaded down her cheeks as she picked up the device in her trembling hand.
1:00 AM
"Nisha"
"Kabir"
"Are you awake?"
"I'm texting you aren't I?"
"Is anyone in your room?"
Nisha hated this question, she hated admitting that she was alone. She felt vulnerable to admit that she was at home all alone in the darkness.
"...No"
"Want company?"
"Please."
These conversation had started months ago and had simply just become a habit between the two friends. It was their secret. Nisha didn't want to taint anymore of her cousins world with her depression, but Kabira was another story. He understood Nisha in a way that had only made their friendship grow stronger.
Kabir Singh Rathore was the resident good boy with an angry streak. He had a heart of gold, especially when it came to the girl with the golden heart. Kabir understood how lonely an empty house could feel. When he had moved to the city with his mother they had nothing. Not a house, or a job, nothing but uncertainty. Eventually they were able to afford an apartment just big enough for the both of them, but his mother was a business woman that spent almost every night working doubles at their family business. Kabir was as lonely as Nisha, which had finally broken down Nisha's walls.
Nisha had been startled from her thoughts as she heard the light taping at her window.
1:45 AM
Nisha let her feet drag across the cold ground towards the window with the flashing lights. Nisha brushed away the last of her tears from her eyes before lifting the window that let in a rush of the hot air. The two brunettes stared at each other for a moment before stepped aside to let the tale handsome boy into her room.
They never said a word to each other, instead they just moved to Nisha's bed and laid done like they had done many times before. Nisha curled into a ball and let Kabir encompass her body with his own. His arms protectively wrapped around her as the two drifted into relaxation. The tears came back and Nisha couldn't help but sniffle as her small figure lightly shook in Kabir's strong arms.
"Nisha." His voice was a soft whisper that tickled the back of her neck. "Nisha, you are not alone." The caring words rolled from his sincere lips as he pulled the girl closer to his body. Eventually the crying stopped and the two young souls drifted to sleep with the neon lights flashing to the beat of their slow and steady breathing.
